Pulp guided by Scott Walker - promising?

So, the Pynchon of crooners follows the perversely uncommercial "Climate of Hunter" and "Tilt" with producing chores on the upcoming Pulp album.

Good idea? On his part, on Pulp's?

Likely outcome?

Well, new Pulp single 'Sunrise' is very good, and very epic, so maybe it'll be a good thing. Though if Jarvis starts warbling 'I give you, twenty-one, twenty-one...' at the start of any tracks I will run away.

Coming after 'Different Class' it would've been a masterstroke, coming after the risible 'This is Hardcore' it's just desperation.

What I want to know is how come Pulp + Scott Walker = More Spiritualized Than The New Spiritualized Single ?!?!?

masonic boom, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think anything out-Spiritualizes the new Spiritualized single.

I liked 'This Is Hardcore', too. There were too many fillers, but some of the tracks such as 'The Fear', 'Dishes', 'Sylvia' and 'The Day After The Revolution' were great.

I think it was GLR? After "Party Hard", one DJ said "That's David Bowie with a track from 'Lodger'". DJ 2 - "No it isn't! I have that album and that track's not on it." DJ 1 - "Well, this is from the new CD with the bonus tracks." DJ 2 - "Oh, right." DJ 1 - "Ha! Gotcha! It's actually PULP!"

Anyone claiming This is Hardcore was bad or had filler is insane. But I respect this. ;-)

Once I've actually heard the darn thing I'll say something -- but right now in principle it's a great idea.

well I must say I do like Sunrise, although personally I think the end-part is highly annoying. But it's a great song and I like it a lot better than the live-versions of it I got.. so yes the new album does sound promising.

:>

I'm a big fan of both Pulp and Scott Walker (tho I don't really play "Tilt" for pleasure much), but I don't think that having Walker as producer is a good idea. Doesn't a band as ambitious and prone to "epics" as Pulp need a producer who will keep them on track? Walker doesn't sound like the man to me, tho I could be proven wrong. Haven't heard the single either...

what's wrong with epics? the three minute epic is a poor idea as it doesn't have the space and scope for the expectation/denial axis which is the thrill of an epic, but with walkerian economy pulp epics could be great.

Well - I think this covers any answer I might have for the '2nd half of 2001' thread. Any idea when this is slated?

Is it just me or does Sunrise sound just like mid-period velvets (post white light white heat, but before their equipment got stolen and they went soft for their s/t).

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wait! Sunrise doesn't just sound like mid-period velvets, it IS mid period velvets, a warmed over version of The Ocean. Not that I mind. Except you can't top Cale's organwork on that number.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Haven't heard the single yet, but it sounds like VU?

Honesty, I don't need that kind of depressing news this early in the morning.

CountV/John T, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a rip-off of "Ocean" but I like it more because I like Jarvis a lot more than Lou Reed and think that sunrise as a metaphor catches the song's mood better than ocean as a metaphor captures its songs mood.

The choirs are nicked off Gainsbourg's "Cargo Culte" though surely.

BUT can I be a wanker and say that the live bootleg Leeds 2000 version I've been playing to death for months is better? Thankyou.

I hardly know any Pulp songs but the ones i know are good. & the idea of Scott Walker as a producer seems a really inspired one - Scott Walker music (the interesting part of SW records) minus his singing & lyrics (don't like) - has he produced anyone else's records ever?
