wanna check out some heavy dub.. any recommendations from the mountains of stuff out there?

Preferably looking for heavy, fucked up, pre drum machine, analog stuff from the 70's.

I guess i would be looking at Lee Perry and King Tubby's as a start - but where?

King Dub by King Tubby is an excellent compilation. Also check out the Indapendant Intavenshun compilation by Lindon Kwesi Johnson. Both excellent and very, very heavy.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 8 May 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Good question, I'm going to be watching for recommendations here myself but here are mine to begin with.

Nick's OTM about King Tubby - all the comp.s on Blood And Fire are great - Dub Gone Crazy, Dub Gone 2 Crazy, Freedom Sounds In Dub and Dub Like Dirt.

Also check out his protege Scientist (probably starting with Scientist Meets The Space Invaders); Keith Hudson's Pick-A-Dub; Mad Profesor (Ras Portraits is a good place to start); and (if you can find them) Joe Gibbs' African Dub All-Mighty Vol.s 1-4 and Ranking Dread's In Dub (another album waaaaay overdue for release on CD).

Lee Perry/The Upsetters--Super Ape, Blackboard Jungle Dub, Black Ark in Dub
Augustus Pablo--anything w/Rockers in the title (El, Original, Classic,...)

Thanks for the suggestions..

Another question..Years ago, my brother had a cassette with some great track, one of which i've been trying to trace for ages, i can remember some of the lyrics which kind of went like.

"hey mr lee what can you cook for me, cos i'm starving, i'm starvin'. I know you're shop's always crowded 'cos you serve nice food"

It was a great track, but i have no clue who it was by

any ideas?

Most of the big, excellent moments have been listed here (and on that other t, but I will add Sly & Robbie's A Dub Experience, which is mostly their Black Uhuru productions (Chill Out, etc.) dubbed out. Certainly not roots/eating dirt/Space Echo style, but equally fabulous. And, IMHO, better than most of the African Dub series, which I've always found boring and overrated, except for Chapter 3.

Though it's not all strictly dub, I think "An Even Harder Shade of Black" by Santic and Friends is absolutely incredible and it continues to be one of my favorite albums period.

Also, another vote for the "Harry Mudie meets King Tubby in Dub Conference" discs--actually, I only have Vol. 1 but its very top notch.

Also, don't think anyone's mentioned the Impact All-Stars - "Forward the Bass: Dub From Randy's 1972-1975". Extrememly heavy and very simple but effective dub techniques + great sound. Includes maybe my favorite dub track ever, "Ordinary Version Number 3"

As for Lee Perry, in addition to what people have already said, there's some good stuff on the last two of the three trojan box sets. "build the ark" and "open the gate" I think--and what's not dub on those sets is also mostly all good.

"Roast Fish and Cornbread"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Everything mentioned above + there are two comps put together by Ian McCann on the Metro label called Original Bass Culture and More Bass Culture which you can get for a fiver each. The latter is 90% Tubby, but the first is more varied - very minimal and heavy (Tubby, Jammys, Niney, Scratch etc) and worth having for the Niney's sublime 'Couchie Dub'. Also £4.99 from most stores is 'X-Ray Music : A Dub Directory' (Blood and Fire) all fantastic stuff espec, JoJo Hookim's 'Moses Dub' (anyone know what this is a version of? Is it Mash Down?) and Jammy's 'The Champion Version'.

Probably the best dub comp recently is Trojan's 'Flashing Echo'- everything from proto-dub like Andy Capp, The Hippy Boys and The Upsetters to some heavy, heavy versions from likes of Jammys, Scientist, Gibbs, and Roots Radics.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Herbs of Dub" by Jah Lloyd and King Tubby.
"The Best Dressed Chicken In Town" by Dr. Alimantado
"Scientist Rids The World Of THe Evil Vampires" by Scientist

Prince Far I - Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter 3
The Trojan dub box sets are excellent and a good inexpensive starting point (3 cds for I think 20 bucks). Vol. 2 is better than 1. Fantastic.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 8 May 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Dub Gone Crazy & Dub Like Dirt & xRay Music are great comps of mostly Tubby's

the Yabby You 2CD retrospective (!)

Dub inna Firehouse
Treasure Island Dub
Stalag (I forget the whole name of this)

& buttch had it so right @ A.Pablo - anything with Rockers or references to Egypt in it

  • there's some good stuff on the last two of the three trojan box sets. "build the ark" and "open the gate"

Seconded, w/authority! Also check out Scratch's 'Words of My Mouth' comp on Trojan.

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 8 May 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of the above, plus something that I bought last week: I got the third in a Blood and Fire series called Select Cuts, contemporary-ish remixes of Jamaican classics. It's not all wonderful but the Big Youth tracks are storming.

Daniel (dancity), Thursday, 8 May 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

everything mentioned, plus another cheapie "dub chill out" on music club. anyone buying it and expecting to chill will be strangely disaapointed. booom!

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Trojan's 3CD dub box is a nice price these days, I picked one up for less than $18 I believe....

    and Prince Far I, indeed....
Blood and Fire and Pressure Sounds labels in general.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Friday, 9 May 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

actually there's 2, 3CD Trojan dub sets, both very good, but w/poorer sound quality than Blood & Fire, Pressure sounds stuff...and one or both of them include too many tracks from the Tommy McCook's 'Cookin' album--still, a good value

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 May 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

twenty replies and no cybele? wtf?!

    M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 9 May 2003 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

And also no mention of the Wackie's label. For SHAME!

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 9 May 2003 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

    scientist vs wiley FITE

Chip Morningstar (bob), Friday, 9 May 2003 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

And also no mention of the Wackie's label. For SHAME!

Wackies was mentioned in buttch's thread

Wackies is not strictly dub, but it comes very close to Perry's sound and it is an absolute favourite of my brother and myself.

    http://www.jahsonic.com/Wackies.html (sorry for the plug)

Jan Geerinck (jahsonic), Friday, 9 May 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

also check Tikiman with Maurizio and Ron Trent (more housey) and anything by Basic Channel.

Jan Geerinck (jahsonic), Friday, 9 May 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of: has anybody heard this?

    http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00006BXJK.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

It looks tasty but one never knows with these things.

    scott m (mcd), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

my god, how many permutations of an "Upsetter Box Set" can Trojan crank out?!?

Anyway, I checked out the tracklisting--I am familiar with a little more than half of the stuff from other releases. I get the feeling that this is a breadth over depth approach. But it's good stuff if you don't have it elsewhere, and I get the idea that affordability is the point with these new CD boxes, so that helps.

Problem is, if you expect to buy more Perry later, you'll find yourself re-buying most of what's on this collection.

arch Ibog (arch Ibog), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, if you don't think you'll be buying more Scratch, that set prolly isn't too bad of an idea. shit, just checked the price--what the hell, get it. it'd be possible to buy a few other Scratch releases and not have TOO much overlap, eg. I don't think there's a track on that set that's also on Arkology...ditto Super Ape.
