('Time out of Mind' vs 'Love & Theft') vs (Mark Knopfler vs Mason Ruffner)

Did Knopfler play on Time out of Mind? Are you suggesting that more credit should go to Dylan's collaborators as the people behind the many perceived ups and downs in his latterday career as opposed to the capricious Genius of the man himself?

Time Out Of Mind just for its production.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Noodles look where the main "vs" is.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

so what is the question then?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Or is it "which would make a more interesting argument - comparing his 2 last albums or 2 of his geetar collaborators?"?

If so I'd rather hear a discussion about the latter as I know chuff all about Mason Ruffner beyond the fact that Google has just informed me he played on 'Oh Mercy'.

A better question would be "Daniel Lanois vs. my inability to enjoy anything he produces."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Jody OTM for 18,464th time.

my dad has both these albums, but i've never really bothered to listen to them...
are either of them worth it for non die hard dylan fans?
i mean,i love a lot of bob dylan, but there's other albums i still haven't heard (john wesley harding, etc) that might be better

robin (robin), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't really explain that-what i mean is that i get the impression that the reason these albums are considered good is that a lot of people have a huge emotional involvement in dylan,so if he does something quite good they'll be more inclined to see it as a return to form-they've played all his albums a million times,so if the new one has something good they'll jump on it,if you know what i mean

but am i being too harsh on them?

robin (robin), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark Knopfler plays on Steely Dan's "Time Out of Mind", not Dylan's.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Thursday, 8 May 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

But he does play on some of Dylan's 80s albums doesn't he? 'Slow Train Coming'?

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 8 May 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, i think he lasted (off&on) through "Infidels".

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Thursday, 8 May 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

How can you hate Martha and The Muffins JBR? Do you hate fun?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 8 May 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

despite Daniel Lanois, Time Out of Mind. Much of Love and Left is Kraft Cheese Dylan. The production may be annoying on the former but the songs are far less compelling on the latter. But then "production" has never stood in Dylan's way. Leon Russell was one of his better producers, if you can imagine that.

Exception: Sugar Babe.

neither guitar player does much for me.

rumplestiltskin, Thursday, 8 May 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

mmmm, Kraft Dinner.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 8 May 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the answer is charlie sexton vs larry campbell

steve k (http://go.to/stevek) (stevek10), Thursday, 8 May 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

charlie sexton is the big problem musically with Love & Theft. "Roots! Roots! Look, I've got Roots!"

rumplestiltskin, Thursday, 8 May 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

the dude from Saturday Night Live

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 8 May 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think Leon ever produced any of Bob's albums..

Phil Dokes (sunny), Thursday, 8 May 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

no, leon produced just two cuts: When I Paint My Masterpiece and Watchin' the River Flow (he might've had a hand in George Jackson and he plays bass on Wallflower). They are both superb. Supposedly there is an album's worth.

Slow Train Comin' = Everything I like about Dylan

Robin - Time Out of Mind is excellent, perhaps in the top 10 Dylan offerings (OK, maybe 15). Likewise for John Wesley Harding, but higher on the list - say, #8 or so. But then I really like Infidels a LOT, which many Dylan fans do not. Love & Theft is quite listenable, but far from prime Dylan. Blonde On Blonde, Hwy. 61, Bringing It All Back Home, Blood On the Tracks, Live 1966 ("Royal Albert Hall"), Desire, Live 1975 are all essential..........

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Friday, 9 May 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I've not fancied listening to Time Out Of Mind since it came out but Love And Theft is TERRIFIC - it's like the serious-comeback-artist Dylan of TOTM getting drunk in the studio and telling some proper stories after the critics have all walked out nodding their heads (except they were hiding behind the studio door and it got raves anyway).

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 9 May 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

His voice, which is totally ragged and full of phlegm, is a real (ahem) sticking point for me with these latterday albums, esp. Love and Theft. I admire it for many reasons but I can't listen to it with much pleasure.

I still insist that the most modest and accessible period of Dylan's career, and the ideal starting point for newbies, is from The Basement Tapes through New Morning.
