Which pop star would you most like to meet?

Not just grabbing an autograph off them, but to talk to - knock back a few jars - hang around - correspond - whatever. Who do we think would be interesting?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Screaming Fats McGibbon. I'd ask him about the trilogy he recorded inside a closed piano floating between Australia and New Zealand in 1974.Shame he drowned...

Momus, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oscar Wilde. In Paris, after the fall. Dish the dirt, compare love lives, share fan mail, argue poetry and the classics. Try to get him to come spend time at my spa and work on his tan.

Most pop stars I admire strike me as petulant egotists whose company one would otherwise. I once met Billy Bragg though, whose music I'm completely indifferent to, and he was very good company - similarly suspect Bono is a good laugh as long as he doesn't start singing. An evening with Kevin Shields, Tricky, Mark E. Smith, Bjork and Thomas Koner would probably be insufferable.

Maybes the lads in Basement Jaxx, they seem sussed.

stevo, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All of Oscar Wilde's albums were rubbish.

Matt D'Cruz, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Although a couple of years ago I spent an afternoon with the pub with Pavement, which was very enjoyable indeed, and they were all very cool and down to earth, including SM who I was worried would be something of a cold fish.

But fuck it, aim high. I reckon an afternoon and a few drinks with Michael Jackson would be interesting, just to see if he really is a few sandwiches short of a double decker bus.

Matt D'Cruz, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kristin Hersh, except I've already met her. The couple of hours I spent in her company a few years back were great, and I wish I'd been able to calm down enough to stay in the cafe longer. She was very affable, but a little voice in the back of my head kept shouting 'you're talking to KRISTIN HERSH, you're going to make a jerk out of yourself any minute' which prevented me from relaxing enough to not bolt at the earliest oppoortunity.

Ian Crause, if he counts. I have been introduced to him once, but I was too freaked out to talk to him. I'd like another chance as by all accounts he is a very interesting man.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't like meeting people.

duane, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Setting those I've had the chance to meet -- I'd actually want to talk to Max Martin and Timbaland, together. Who wouldn't?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wouldn't. Who are they?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wayne Coyne from The Flaming Lips. Him, or maybe Britney Spears (of course)....

Adam Bruneau, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Metaproducers of the New Pop Age. Max = Britney, Backstreets, N'Sync, etc. Timbaland = Missy, Aaliyah, Jay-Z, etc.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I certainly would mind knocking back a couple of brewski's with Royal Trux, well let's say Jennifer, because they always seem to get into an argument with each other -and than you'll be the geek in the middle ;). They seem to be intelligent people, so lots of inspiring dope/philosophy/sci-fi/tv talk. My lungs probably will feel dead the next morning though, by insanely keeping up smoking the same amount of fags as Lady Jennifer.

Omar, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A friend of mine loves Super Furry Animals, and although I'm not a fan (yet), they seem like a fun bunch. Although I might not understand much of what they say.

Lesley Higgins, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

tom waits. he looks like a down-to-earth kind of guy and probably full of stories too.

ernest, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom Waits is down to earth, I saw him buying his groceries at the Food Emporium.

Lesley Higgins, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd like to meet Wayne from Flaming Lips too. Entertaining guy.

"I'd actually want to talk to Max Martin and Timbaland, together. Who wouldn't?"

I.

, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I saw Tom Waits once in a Safeway store, drunk and beet red. All he bought was a pad of paper at 3am... he sort of nodded to me on his way out. I want to meet Nina Persson from the Cardigans, but I hear she recently married, so now I guess it's over between me and her.

Andy, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Elvis.

JM, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd love to spend a week up Mt. Baldy with Leonard Cohen. It'd be a riot!

Johnathan, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's a difference between meet and befreind or even hang out with. I'm afraid if I did meet a pop star I would secretly keep trying to somehow get "discovered" by them. Egoist that I am. I've always wanted to meet Kate from The Lollies. Or David Bowie.

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've met both. Kate is more fun to get drunk with.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was going to say that it'd probably be more fun to meet one of the regular posters than a musician. Although I have been known to lie awake at night thinking about having dinner with Gwen Stefani...

Dave M., Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In heavens name, why? Though hopefully it was a good dinner.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to fly kites with Jonny Greenwood.

Melissa W, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Momus !
or Madonna
In fact i think Momus meeting Madonna would make my life.

anthony, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have actually been thinking about how much I want to hang out with Missy Elliot.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks, Ned! That's my new sig:

Kate St.Claire: More fun to get drunk with than David Bowie!

masonic boom, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wanna go shopping with Beck. Not because I worship him, but because we have the most in common.

Kerry Keane, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It woudl be strategicaly correct for Beck to get a Mullet now. I woul d watch a porn with Momus and Madonna

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always thought that I wanted to go record shopping in Camden with the Dandy Warhols, or at least Peter. And then I did. And it was so nerve-wracking that I could barely enjoy myself, and consequentially only bought two CDs.

Kate the Saint (t), Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, my answer is different from Little Luptune's answer. So there will always be a conflict in my answer between David Byrne and Jenifer Lopez/Britney Spears.

Luptune Pitman, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought Beck *was* a mullet. Something you're not too sure whether to revere, laugh at or be tired of.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Momus Lou Reed, but I'd criticize horribly. "You used to write such good music! Then you got boring!"

Anyone else? I'm really racking my brains. I can think of so many authors I'd like to meet, but not musicians. I don't want my idolizations to come crashing down or their music to seem tainted (by their personalities)!

Acia, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hardly a pop star, but until 3rd July this year I wanted to meet Delia Derbyshire. Now the chance has gone forever ...

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To answer the question, me, from the future of course. Failing that, The Strokes, so I could gun them all down and then machete those who weren't killed outright. Sounds like a fun night out to me, anyway.

DG, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would watch a porn with Momus and Beck.

NrrdGrrl, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two months pass...
I would av a couple of beers do some drugs and make some records with eminem. THAT IS MY ULTIMATE DREAM.
