Listen to the first single, "Crazy in Love," here:

Holy shit it's amazing. That disco throb in the chorus is so fucking killer. This is gonna be MASSIVE.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 8 May 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

what's the point of putting DC in the subject header? does it need clarification?

all i can say is it'd better be better than "Work It Out".

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 8 May 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I was too excited by the track to think of a better title!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 8 May 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That song is great! I love the beat in the verses, it actually has a cymbal. The chorus beat feels like an updated motown/gospel type thing.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

you're absolutely right, yanc3y: this is going to be fucking HUGE. pretty good track, even.

Jay K (Jay K), Thursday, 8 May 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't heard it, but "Work It Out" haters is wrong.

Adam A. (Keiko), Thursday, 8 May 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

This totally rules, though I'm still loving "Work It Out," the tune from the third Austin Powers film more. But Jay-Z's big-upping of his girl's prowess here is great. So cute. Crazy madhouse percussion, too.

Thanks for the link, Yanc3y. Anyone get a promo of the album yet? I tried to get one and was shut down in less time than it took me to ask.

Mikael Wood, Thursday, 8 May 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Since it's not out until July, I can't imagine promos will be easily had for at least another month. I want to hear more though! This track's just killing me. I've been listening to it on repeat for three hours straight now (which is the exact same thing I did when I first heard "Cry me a River").

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 8 May 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I've no doubt that Epic's being supertight with the promos. Just figured one of the higher-profile crits here might have snagged an advance and might just be bursting with good things to say about it...

Mikael Wood, Thursday, 8 May 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I'm positive Epic is being supertight with promos, since Columbia's releasing the album.

Mikael Wood, Friday, 9 May 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a great tune! I never understood all the hate towards "Work it Out" either. It wasn't quite the sum of its parts, but it was a nice effort. This rules tho!

original bgm, Friday, 9 May 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The hate towards "Work It Out" was because it was a limpid, unfunky parody of much better music.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 9 May 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

lim·pid adj.
Characterized by transparent clearness; pellucid.
Easily intelligible; clear: writes in a limpid style.
Calm and untroubled; serene.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 9 May 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

hey.

it's amazing.

d k (d k), Friday, 9 May 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Good track. I like it a lot more than any DC song I've heard,
but it's worth noting that the harmonies aren't as full as
before. Beyonce may be the most attractive Child but not the
most talented.

squirl plise, Friday, 9 May 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the important word in that definition is transparent.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 9 May 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It has a kind of awkward transition between verse and chorus..

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 9 May 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

they're all kinda horsey in the best girl group tradition

oh, my beloved d.c....one world-smashing album is all you should really expect from someone i suppose.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 10 May 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

chorus is amazing, but it doesn't really hold together beyond that.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 10 May 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

How come more producers don't remember how irresistably
funky latin percussion is?

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Saturday, 10 May 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yance is right, it IS amazing! Anyone who hasn't heard it yet can download it here:

Mind Taker, Friday, 16 May 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

sadly i'm gonna have to back off my earlier proclamations a bit. i downloaded it last week and i've listened to it way too much since -- the charm's somewhat worn off (mainly beyonce's "UH oh UH oh uhohoh" thing annoys me now), but it's still a mighty fine tune.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you seen the new Pepsi commercial where Beyonce plays (basically) Dorothy Dandridge playing Carmen singing a Pepsi-themed parody of "That's Love" (fuck I forget what it's called in the Bizet)?

Beyonce is sooooooo beautiful. Someone needs to cast her in a musical NOW.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

beyonce is gorgeous but she has a moustache which ain't the most attractive thing going

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"Habeñera".

I would be more into her in that commercial if she was the one singing the high part at the end.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Y, do you like Nelly?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm, I was hoping for something a little more 'futuristic' sounding. It's too "live", and nothing's making my head spin.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Other than "Air Force Ones," yeah. Why?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
Does Jay-Z refer to her as "young ho" in this song?

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I think he's say "Hov", as in himself.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was Karl Rove?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Karl Runs Slipsod - Over Nearly Everyone

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

awww this is just like when all of ilm was collectively trying to figure out what h to the izzo meant

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 17 July 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

How strange is "Be With You" on the Beyonce album??? The verses are Shuggie Otis' "Strawberry Letter 23" note for note, and the chorus is Bootsy Collins' "I'd Rather Be With You." Fucking weird.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

this cd has the sexiest sleeve notes since a nancy sinatra record.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

also whenever i hear "it's a funny thing to try and explain..." in my head, ice cube chimes in immediately afterward with, "...how i could just kill a man."

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
mygod "Be With You" is such a fantastic song. Beyonce's got rilly astounding breath control and frikin' just SCULPTS those phrases.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 11 September 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, she does handle herself well in "be with you." what i like about it is that she takes bootsy's delivery from "i'd rather be with you" and applies it to shuggie's "strawberry letter 23" (which is the melody for the verses), so you get those dramatic and sultry pauses. it's a very good song. i think the title track's prolly the best song on the disc though. i just wish the album sounded more like "work it out" or "crazy in love" -- beyonce asserting herself with bombast & powah, not begging for it with all of those dionne warwick-lite ballads.
