Ease Your Feet In the Sea

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 9 May 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Stars of Track and Field.

mike a (mike a), Friday, 9 May 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, nice pick, Mark. I'll go with "Like Dylan in the Movies."

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 May 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

She's Losing It.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 9 May 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Stars of Track and Field, for me too. It's just simply lovely.

Sean@tangmonkey (Sean M), Friday, 9 May 2003 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"lazy line painter jane"

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 9 May 2003 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax OTM with the sublime and preposterous "Electronic Renaissance"

Aaron A., Friday, 9 May 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Lazy Line Painter Jane

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 9 May 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Chickfactor even though it's by that "other guy" that no one seems to like but me.

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Friday, 9 May 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

What is an Arab strap?

james (james), Friday, 9 May 2003 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What is an Arab strap?

Geir!

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 9 May 2003 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

My Wandering Days Are Over. Not at all the point at which I fell for them, but more like the focus of a tardy blooming of fresh affection.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 9 May 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"Expectations" off Tigermilk... they're so good when they're mixing a little dark and twisted into their twee.
"And while you're picking up the mess / the teacher's looking up your skirt..."

Ben Boyer, Friday, 9 May 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn. Come in 16 posts in, and all your top picks are already taken. I agree with A Nairn most.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 9 May 2003 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Quite difficult to choose one, there are many classic tunes to my opinion.
"Seeing other people" maybe.

Sami (Sami), Friday, 9 May 2003 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The first one I've heard: "The State I'm In" from Tigermilk...

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Friday, 9 May 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

This answer is simple, as they were one-trick ponies@

The State That I Am In.

kate, Friday, 9 May 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Dog On Wheels. It's bizarrely danceable.

cis (cis), Friday, 9 May 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Expectations". Amazing a lyricist as the man is, he'll never top "Your obsession gets you known throughout the school for being strange/ Making lifesize models of the Velvet Underground in clay"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 9 May 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"Seymour Stein" or "lazy Line Painter Jane"

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 9 May 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Boy With The Arab Strap"

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 9 May 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"Don't Leave the Light On, Baby."

"What is an Arab strap?"

It's a "marital aid" (read: sex toy).

Brandon Gentry (Brandon Gentry), Friday, 9 May 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Photo Jenny

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 9 May 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"What is an Arab strap?"

It's a "marital aid" (read: sex toy).

The song itself refers to this man, though: http://www.empastres.com/imagenes/arabs1p.jpg

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 9 May 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

He DOES look like he has a lascivious laugh. And central location, to boot.

Brandon Gentry (Brandon Gentry), Friday, 9 May 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, Sleep The Clock Around. B&S go Eno. with bagpipes.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 9 May 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Has it come to this?

Sleep the Clock Around, yeah.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 9 May 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Le Pastie De La Borgeousie! I'm really shocked that hasn't come up, it's the only one I miss since I sold my records

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 9 May 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"judy is a dick slap" from the legal man EP, just because it's a brilliant title.

jason m. (jason m), Friday, 9 May 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't an Arab strap a sex toy ... for horses?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 May 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Like Dylan In The Movies" altough I think "The Wrong Girl" sounds like waht "Rubber Soul" as produced by Phil Spector (in the good way).

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Friday, 9 May 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

'The Loneliness of a Middle Distance Runner'
I read an article on Tangents (forget who it was by) which claimed that the recorded version of this, which was on the Jonathan David single, is far inferior to the live version. I've never heard it live, but I find it very hard to imagine anything being better.

Cathy, Friday, 9 May 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

That will probably be Alistair Fitchett. The live version as done on Sky TV in Dec 99 is indeed better than the version they eventually released. I've heard them play it pretty badly live too. There's a very different studio version around too, which they premiered on Radio Scotland way back in Dec 97, along with early plays of 'This is Just a Modern Rock Song' and 'Slow Graffiti'. That's great too - organ led rather than picked on guitar.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The weakest thing about the released version is the guitar break.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Or put another way: the best thing about the unreleased version is the speaker-shredding guitar freak-out.

I can't remember which one I like best.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 9 May 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

there was this song they performed when i saw them in 98 or 99, that was about a boy in school and he was smarter than the teachers, etc. His name may have been Anthony. Does anyone know if this song has been released.

ano ano (ano ano), Friday, 9 May 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

'Lord Anthony' I beleive. I don't think it's been released, has it?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 9 May 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

'The Model'

wait, no, 'Photo Jenny'.

derrick (derrick), Saturday, 10 May 2003 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"lord anthony" was never released, no.

hmm, POO: I suppose either "sleep the clock around" or "the state that I am in."

scott pl. (scott pl.), Saturday, 10 May 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
'if she wants me'.

i've realised 18 months on, that their recent lp was the best one for years and years.

piscesboy, Monday, 28 February 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

What took you so long?

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

String Bean Jean!

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

for today anyway i think i'll say "I Love My Car"

rentboy (rentboy), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

i know. i listened to it originally and that...flute or whatever it is on 'step into my office' put me right off. the lyrics didn't help. i think that blinded me to the rest. the 'fold your hands...' album was so bad that i never thought in a million years some of their best stuff lay ahead. i was a bit of a big fan once. it's a break-up album i think i'm correct in saying. it's dead sad a lot of it.

piscesboy, Monday, 28 February 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

ooh, love the horns in "Love my car".

Ever since I got the DVD, I get "Big John Shaft" rolling around in my head every day or so.

theophilus jones (theophilus), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that's a great one too. love that part where he goes "i don't get no mail at my house anymore, my manager's my bride"

rentboy (rentboy), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

SIMPLE THNGS

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

That's actually not true, I just wanted it to get some props.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

What does OPO stand for, please?

I SO keep mis-reading what Ian said about Ken's prick.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

It stands for 'Only pick one', apparently. I really hate it, but what can you do?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

OK, thanks, er, Alba.

Stuart Murdoch, then.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

I SO keep mis-reading what Ian said about Ken's prick.

I wish there was something amusing to say in response..

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

"Judy and the Dream of Horses"

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

i can't decide!!!!
:(

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

I heard "Wrapped Up In Books" in the car on the radio just a little while ago and it was good. It was on KUCI, which has a weak signal, so the end of the song faded out to a Christian station, which was funny. I don't like Stevie's singing so much, but the arrangements and everything sound so "on"!

youn, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

of ones not picked already, winter wooskie

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

Judy Is a Dickslap

Mooro (Mooro), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

ten months pass...
I Love My Car - the Dixie brass band! The clever Beach Boys references!

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Saturday, 28 January 2006 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Today it's "The Blues Are Still Blue"

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 28 January 2006 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Get Me Away From Here... Isn't that everyone's secret favourite? But I think for me it's a tie with Slow Grafitti. How come noone's mentioned that one yet? Just so beautiful.

Nutmeg Akasaka (Nutmeg), Saturday, 28 January 2006 19:04 (twenty years ago)

"I believe in travelin' light"

Stephen C (ihope), Saturday, 28 January 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

"The Boy With the Arab Strap"

It is my favorite song (ever).

Tape Store (Tape Store), Saturday, 28 January 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

"Seeing Other People"

tremendoid (tremendoid), Saturday, 28 January 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Updated for 2006: "White Collar Boy" has moved ahead of "Lazy Line Painter Jane" for me.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 28 January 2006 20:41 (twenty years ago)

The clever Beach Boys references!?

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 28 January 2006 21:04 (twenty years ago)

"Stay Loose"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 28 January 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

The State I Am In..

though i would really really love to hear a proper recording of Rhoda.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:42 (twenty years ago)

The clever Beach Boys references!?

Seriously man - ugh! It's too early/late to be dealing with RJG.

Okay, how about "I love my Carl/I love my Brian, Dennis and my Al/I can even find it in my heart to love Mike Love". If that's not slightly cunning then I don't know what is.

You're gonna say something short and wry without explaining what you mean in a minute, aren't you?

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Sunday, 29 January 2006 05:17 (twenty years ago)

Stay Loose is mad because it's not like, a "Belle and Sebastian" song. The only thing I can equate it to is Ashes To Ashes, but I'm sure they're referencing something else I can't quite put my finger on. Anyone?

I never understood the love for Lazy Linepainter Jane though.

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Sunday, 29 January 2006 05:19 (twenty years ago)

Go and see them live when Monica Queen turns up to belt out her bits and then you'll understand. Someone (Jerry the Nipper, I think) once described her as being like Susie from the Trio adverts, tiny body, ENORMOUS voice. It's just joyous.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 29 January 2006 12:33 (twenty years ago)

"Lazy Line Painter Jane" live at Bowlie.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 29 January 2006 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that was the one when I "got it".

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 29 January 2006 12:42 (twenty years ago)

monica queen's last record is amazing.

"Stay Loose is mad because it's not like, a "Belle and Sebastian" song. The only thing I can equate it to is Ashes To Ashes, but I'm sure they're referencing something else I can't quite put my finger on. Anyone?"

Pick up "45's and Under" by Squeeze and all will be revealed.

everything, Monday, 30 January 2006 17:38 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
I recently discovered how great "I Love My Care" "I Don't Love Anyone" and "If She Wants Me" are.

joe schmoe (joeschmoe), Saturday, 25 February 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

My friends and I were listening to "I Love My Car" the other day. None of them are particularly big B&S fans but they all greed it's impossible not to like that song.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 25 February 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

'Seeing Other People' probably. But 'The State I Am In' is on other days..

beaux knee (boney), Sunday, 26 February 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

"Funny Little Frog" makes me wanna dance

holaeh (joeschmoe), Sunday, 26 February 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
"Seeing Other People" is awesome, but "There's too much love" is the best song I have heard in their catalog thus far.

joe schmoe (joeschmoe), Monday, 1 May 2006 05:17 (nineteen years ago)

Is "seeing other people" about two guys? I never got that

huli (joeschmoe), Sunday, 7 May 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

I'd rather pick none, if that's OK.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Sunday, 7 May 2006 23:14 (nineteen years ago)
