60% IS LIKE HELLA WEAK

chaki (chaki), Friday, 9 May 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

He's a bad rapper?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 9 May 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Worst hip hop record I ever heard wa the first BD album. Total waste of time - no hooks, overly complcated lyrics about precisely nothing and a terrible sleeve. No need for it whatsoever.

Neil Simpson, Friday, 9 May 2003 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i have to say that i was a bit let down since i read all these interviews with RZA going off about how it was going to be some futuristic symphonic epic of action hero honey blunt madness and it was just an eh o-k rap album with clumsy keyboard beats. i don't hate it though.

also... wasn't it going to be a film?

and,,,,
the b! the o! the b! the b! the y! the d! the i! the g! the i! the t! the a! the l!
that's like 5 hooks in one.

Honda (Honda), Friday, 9 May 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

RZA should stick to producing, his flow is quite irritating. I did like "Build Strong", however, because of how he aknowledged his weakness. The rarest thing in hip hop, I think.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 9 May 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

"Domestic Violence part 2" with Big Gipp was ace, and anyone who claims that RZA's a mediocre rapper really needs improved aural abilities. I think he's one of the most charismatic emcees around.

Etienne (Etienne), Friday, 9 May 2003 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe this complaint is too picky considering what goes on all the time in pop music, but when I first heard RZA was gonna be "Bobby Digital" I thought "b-b-but what about the Bobby Digital who already exisits--the Jamacian producer, Digital B label, etc.?" seemed weak either way--that is, if he did know about him or didn't. Soured me on RZA's "Bobby Digital" from the start. You want creative re-naming: "big baby jesus" owns you.

arch Ibog (arch Ibog), Friday, 9 May 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

huh huh, Robbie Analog

(fwiw, I actually quite like the Bobby Digital rekkid, but I like lots of not-hooky tweaky music)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 9 May 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

rza's an incredible rapper - see his veses on 'impossible', 'a better tomorrow', '4th chamber', 'wu gambinos', everything else - but over a whole double album he just ends up soundign monotonous. actually, that's the main reason the wu are so great, they've got so many great rappers popping up all over the place that there's an incredible density to everything they do whereas most other hip hop albms have no more than a few different voices so they end up running out of things to day and end up with endless "def jam...peace..it's nineteen ninety four, baby" rubbish.
i remember there being almost no involvement by other wu members on bobby digital (i may be wrong, i haven't listened to it for years) which and also yeah, there aren't really any hooks or anything. the only song i remember liking is 'love jones' and that's just because the sample on it is so gorgeous

`Cos he's the Yahoo Serious of Hip Hop.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

alex do you really have any idea about anything other than shitty punk rock?

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, The Wonder Stuff aren't punk rock.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe someone said the SLEEVE on the first BD album is terrible. What the fuck?!?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

he's like the lord custos of crappy ny trash rock

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooooh BURN!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

better than BEING lord custos tho...can you imagine actually considering all that late-80s/early-90s 120 minutes the apex of music?

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

alex do you really have any idea about anything other than shitty punk rock?

You may know more about Hip Hop than I do (or perhaps not), but not knowing a specific solitary thing about a genre certainly hasn't stopped whistledheaded cheese monkeys from spouting forth their misinformed two cents on these threads, so why should I be any different?

That said, I think the whole "Bobby Digital" persona is both hilarious and tragic. Actually, I recant my earlier accusation (that he's the Yahoo Serious of Hip Hop) and submit that he's the CHRIS GAINES of Hip Hop.....forcing a ridiculously NEEDLESS charade on fans who already love and respect him for his estabished work.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

now see, if you said THAT at the beginning i woulda agreed with you!

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 9 May 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It's better than disc 2 of Forever.

ss, Friday, 9 May 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it's among the Wu's greatest moments, but I still like it. I half-idolise the RZA anyway.

I was just flipping through the latest Wax Poetics and lo there's a RZA interview.

The first picture re-endeared me to the guy: there he was eating ramen noodles out of a tupperware container, no frontin'.

I thought to myself, maybe this guy is OK after all. He will allow himself to be photographed eating ramen noodles out of a tupperware container. I wonder if he prepared it at home, and then brought it with? I like it when people plan ahead, and you can't argue that home-cooked ramen noodles represent a food bargain.

I flipped a few more pages.

There was another picture of RZA: tenderly playing an acoustic guitar, looking intently at the fretboard. The picture of artistic seriousness.

Everything that was accomplished by the ramen noodles picture was suddenly horribly ruined.

p.s. - I didn't read any of the interview.

five years pass...

i liked the production on the first BD album a lot but the new album just seems like more of the same boringness as the last one. i thought he might have fresh ideas for some reason but its just plodding, not really developed beats, and rza talking all sorts of weird randomness. is there any point to the BD persona anymore? i dont see how its any different to what a rza album would be like. do gee street own the rights to solo rza albums or something?

the dont be afraid beat is good though. kinda bouncy compared to the rest of the album.

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 20 July 2008 11:30 (seventeen years ago)

"weird randomness" about absolutely nothing, just to clarify.

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 20 July 2008 11:32 (seventeen years ago)

Love "NYC Everything"

billstevejim, Sunday, 20 July 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

He's a great rapper but his flow gets really really claustrophobic on a whole album. Think I like Digital Bullet better but don't remember... Brooklyn Babies I think was the real amazing track
