The Used C or D?

Classic. The singer does that scream thing too much, but I just borrowed this album and am REALLY digging it. Well-produced hyperemotional catchy rock doesn't tend to do well here but hey, I wanna see if there's anybody else here who digs 'em. They're like what AFI *should* be.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 9 May 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate this band so much.

Dead?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 May 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

CLASSIC!
i can go on for hours about how i think the Used are ultimately superior to all of those shitty screamo punk bands. the CD is amazing and they have a completely original sound as opposed to bands like Finch and taking back sunday and thursday who all sound the same. Thank you for starting this thread.
not to sound like a pretentious bastard but i remember picking up a warped tour sampler CD like over a year ago and the used were on it. no one at had heard of them, they didn't have a website but i thought they fucking rocked and couldn't wait til they got big.

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Friday, 9 May 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the new AFI is fucking horrible. they totally suck now.

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Friday, 9 May 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

WHY does he sing like that? its SO forced. they are trying SO hard to sound a certain way. i dont see how you can say they are original.

chaki (chaki), Friday, 9 May 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

he sounds like he's going to vomit. in fact he's vomited on stage before. if you knew anything about the formation of the band when they were younger, you'd know that they strived to be original from day one. they've done just that.

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Friday, 9 May 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

dude i've known them personally for a long time. years. it makes me hate them more.

chaki (chaki), Friday, 9 May 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

and when did "sounding like you are going to vomit" = good? (unless you're mike patton)

chaki (chaki), Friday, 9 May 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Their album cover is so stupid and ugly.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Friday, 9 May 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I like that "Boxful of Sharp Objects" song, the song they had out before that sounded like a parody of emo.

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 9 May 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

mike patton just has a bad voice in general. im sure you have known them for years...

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Friday, 9 May 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I could agree with Anthony on SOMETHING, but it won't be here, as I find the Used absolutely devoid of ANYTHING to recommend them. Crap, crap and thrice verily crap.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 9 May 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, I've followed your name with "otm" many times. Most recently about the crapitude of "American Pie" (the song, not the movie).

I couldn't be sicker and fuckinger tireder of hearing people mew about "originality" than I am today. Since when has originality had anything to do with rock? The only reason people care about who did it first rather than who does it is to trump your fellow record nerds with your impressive awareness of obscurity. Plus the fact that, thanks to massive amounts of money, training, etc. Major labels have a bit of an edge on "better," though, being what they are, you can bet they'll be lacking "firsts."

Anyone notice that people who scream about originality can usually only notice one detail of a band? "Nickelback ripped off Creed..." well, no, see Nickelback added the innovation of a half-decently swinging bassline. "Creed ripped off Pearl Jam..." well somewhat, except Eddie Vedder never thought to distinctly hawk monotheism or add strings to their power ballads. You can say a new band does it WORSE, but please, people, who really gives a fuck who first thought up a sound, especially when you probably don't have half a fucking clue who really did it anyway?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 9 May 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Very true, Anthony, apologies are due. I meant it more in a general sense. No disrespect intended, I assure you. Don't take my bluster that seriously.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 9 May 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

....and I didn't say the Used weren't "original," I just said they were crap.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 9 May 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't take your bluster that seriously, fret not. and my comment wasn't directed to you (I know originality in clothes is more important than originality in music for you, anyhow ;) ).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 9 May 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(I know originality in clothes is more important than originality in music for you, anyhow

Antoine....may I direct you to the fact that my long-established favorite bands are Killing Joke, Cop Shoot Cop/Firewater, the Stranglers and XTC......are any of these bands genre-specific fashion-horses in the least? If anything, they're all completely DEVOID of any sartorial style to speak of.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 9 May 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Unlike, say.....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 9 May 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

you might have had a point if you hadn't brought up Killing Joke. You CLEARLY appreciate their fashion sense, man. Why else all the pics if their "aesthetic" didn't move you?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 9 May 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The pics of Killing Joke I post on a worryingly regular basis simply amuse the hell out of me and make me smile broadly and laugh heartily....like, say, this one....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 9 May 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Another word in the Joke's defense.....they initially did not appear on any of their album sleeves. Conversely, when they appeared on the cover of Brighter Than A Thousand Suns there simply appeared portraits of their faces. When asked why this was the case, the explanation was given that they didn't want to be visually tagged to any passing fad/movement that their clothes might signify.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 9 May 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

You think they would have known you can have strong visual representation (and therefore be tied in with a fad or movement) without being on the cover, cuz they've got it. The first Killing Joke album has some of my fave artwork of all time and was MAD influential.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 9 May 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

mike patton just has a bad voice in general.

tee hee

im sure you have known them for years...

i have. which totally makes your "if you knw anything about the formation of the band then you would realize..." argument irrelevent.
and sorry anthony, if (to my ears) something sounds extrordinarily contrived or forced then its usually a turn off (to me).

chaki (chaki), Friday, 9 May 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike Patton has a GREAT VOICE! :(

I love the Used... but that's no excuse to make fun of Mike Patton, ya gay chowderhead, ha ha ha... JP, now I order you to do fifty thousand push-ups while listening to "Be Aggressive" on eternal repeat.

justin s., Saturday, 10 May 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Chaki, I'm not particularly bothered by who you do or don't like (cuz you have a great fashion sense and we need more of that), but how can you say Mike Patton's great and that you don't like stuff that sounds forced or contrived IN THE SAME SENTENCE? How can you be as blessedly "eclectic" as Patton is WITHOUT being forced and contrived?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 10 May 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

anthony, to me, (almost) everything mike patton does sounds like its just FLOWING out of him. it all sounds very NATURAL and MIKE PATTON to me. like prince or frank zappa, you always know when you are listening to a mike patton project because he carries his own unique brand of sound with him even when hoppin from genre to genre. my ears can tell the difference between FORCED and NATURAL (mostly) and MP's ability just sounds very real to me. where as Bert just sounds like he trying WAY TO HARD.

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 10 May 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"the new AFI is fucking horrible. they totally suck now."

I agree with everything, except for the "now" part.

Let's try to not bring Mike Patton into this; imagining him in even the same space-time conintuum as the Used makes me want to gouge out my eyes with a rusty nail.
