Linkin Park - "Somewhere I Belong"

RFD. I can't help being charmed by this, though I think I prefer it when they go all-out synthpop (ha, "I Ran" is more guitar-heavy than "In the End") instead of this jangle stuff. They have a knack for the big memorable chorus and Chester's pretty-boy whine somehow manages me to get on his side instead of wanting to slap him. That break clinches it.

"get me on his side"

up there with the penultimate track of fushitsusha's double for 'intensity' ;-)

(but its OK really)

It's the first Linkin Park single I've been able to stomach, but there's something about that fella's rapping that just bugs me. Something about the combination of self-importance (his voice just screams "this is my pain and it is the most important thing in the world") and the attempt at sounding slightly macho, tough at the same time (which the rest of the band don't do, they seem well aware that everyone knows they're wussies.) It seems like he wants us to relate to him without actually investing anything emotionally himself.

I can't even make out the words on this stuff bar the 'somewhere i belong' bit. I like these game boy type guitars.

It's okay. "Nobody's Listening" is my favourite song from Meteora, it's got a Japanese Flute loop.

"but there's something about that fella's rapping that just bugs me."

Like his inability to do it?

I agree though, Nobody's Listening is the only decent song on Meteora.

And the first song sounds like the Mortal Kombat theme.

Nononono, if it were just that I'd love it!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 10 May 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

jel's otm re 'Nobody's Listening' - fantastic flute loop but the track, which despite reminding me of 'Its Goin Down' which i can't help loving, is ruined for me with the usual crap rapping and whining...

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 10 May 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, it makes me laugh when he raps "I hate my ryhmes, but hate everyone else's more".

This is the best endorsement a song could possibly have for me, honestly.

It's nowhere as good as "In The End" (which will probably stand as one of the best singles of the decade), but it's growing on me. Where "In The End" promised that this would be their LAST whine, "Somewhere I Belong" promises that they'd LIKE to stop whining, but they can't. It's a less satisfying promise, but I appreciate that their fully aware of what crybabies they are. Video is tre dorky, and I ain't feelin' Shinoda's flow as much as I do on "In The End" or "It's Goin' Down".

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 10 May 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i think 'In The End' is their worst single personally, but i'm not really a fan anyway

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 10 May 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know why, when it comes on the radio I bob my head instead of turning the dial as usual. At least until the chorus comes and reminds me that I hate Linkin Park.

What is this song about?

It sounds like it was written by a guidance counselor.

It's the "My Body's Nobody's Body But Mine" for Gen-Y.

I think 'Nobody's Listening' (actually called Faint?) comes over OK on the video, in which some of the lamer rapping is left out, but laughably pathetic on the album. I do get on OK with 'Somewhere I Belong' tho. I've said before I quite like Linkin' Park, but they get on my tits when they tap in too successfully to that whingy-12-y-o market demographic (certain it's all calculated).

Zora (Zora), Sunday, 11 May 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Faint and Nobody's Listening are two different tracks, both have good intros

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 11 May 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"In The End" (which will probably stand as one of the best singles of the decade)

Words fuckin' fail me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 11 May 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(No, of course it's not as good as "In the End".)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 12 May 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretty good for linkin park. New album is very poor compared to the 1st. Its more watered down.
