so i know absolutely nothing about dancehall
i'd be curious to find out about it though
and i just got this email from a record shop in dublin

"Just a quick mail to let you know that the original Ragga Soldier, Fadda Foul aka Wrongmove International has put together a slamming new 90 minute mixtape, '45 Shootout',featuring artists like Ward 21, Elephant Man, Bounty Killa, Wayne Marshall, Buju Banton and hitting riddims like Shenk I Shenk, Trilogy, Pressure Cooker, Big It Up, The Bogle andKrazy Riddim ... only ?6 each!!!!!!!!!!!! Available in Selectah Records alongside some copies of 'Death Before Dishonour', a three tape pack of a huge four way clash from Jamaica
between David Rodigan, Mighty Crown, Bass Odyssey and Tony Matterhorn ... ?15 for the three tapes, over four hours of Dancehall Dubplate selections!!! "

so do these sound like good purchases?
which would be a good introduction,if either?
is the guy who did the mixtape well known/any good?

i know i should just take the plunge,i juts want to be sure that i don't get something completely shit as an introduction to the music, plus i won't be able to get into town till monday so i may as well get some opinions...

why don't you just buy any of the greensleeves samplers? on CD, come out yearly, they'll do.
or greensleeves put out compilations of one riddim at a time, with about 20 different vox on top, vol.21 or 22 or so at the moment the riddim is called something ant something or other...
even as recommended by people with a relative grip on the scene (well, compared to all us Mission of Burma fans) like Simon "Loathed at ILM" R...

and i apologise for completely ignoring your question re. the mixtape, quite rude. they sound like good purchases to me, but i know fa.

i'm sure if i looked i probably would be able to find those compilations,i might have a look
the reason i asked about the mixtape is because i get emails from the various record shops listing new stock all the time, but i've never noticed anything about dancehall before...
i must investigate further
and i don't think simon reynolds is loathed at all,but he does spark a lot of debate....

Simon's not loathed at all (well, he's a friend of mine). In any case, I happen to know a reasonable amount about dancehall and own several mixes by Tony Matterhorn... he's a very respected selector, so this should be pretty quality, as will Rodigan's... I also recommend VPs Strictly the best series of comps and their annual Reggae Gold collections. Re the Greensleeves rhythm albums, the latest one, out vey soon is the Egyptian rhythm and it's actually number 40 in the series (they're not the only label to do rhythm abums either, but they do put out a ridiculous amount of these things). However, it's really not a good idea for you to start out with this style of comp, unless you REALLY like the rhythm in question - they are definitely an acquired listen... you'll prob get incredibly bored about 5 songs in! The new Ragga Ragga Ragga CD on Greensleeves is particularly strong, though, so get a couple of mixtapes and this and see what you like...

yeah i was thinking i'd probably prefer a more varied mix rather than the same rhythm over and over
i'll probably go into town tomorrow and have a look,i'll probably only be able to afford the first mix though...
