classic and sadly neglected no wave trio from NY. Griller is a terrific blast of a record. I also have half of theit live record and that's so brilliant it hurts.

(maybe the best thing in that no wave primer in the wire was a pic of ut)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 11 May 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I have (and like) "Conviction" and that double 12". I sold off "Griller" a long time ago; to me it sounded repressively flat.

mosurock (mosurock), Sunday, 11 May 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

well griller it is more 'conventional' and it did take a while to grow on me but its definetely a good one.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to have In Gut's House but sold it ages ago. Not bad, just didn't stick with me.

*revive*

got 'conviction' and 'in gut's house' through slsk and from the one unattentive listen I gave it really good stuff.

really needs a reissue.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i usedta have a UT badge...it was pink, came with their live cassette which i might still have round somewhere

duane, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I have the first two EPs (Ut & Confidential) as well as the three studio albums. All wonderful, but Griller is probably my favourite. Fucking great band if you ask me, but always really underrated. I saw them a couple of times, once supporting Dinosaur Jr in Leeds IIRC, which was my first encounter with them, and maybe again with the Band of Susans. They were pretty shy, but Jesus, they could really stoke up a racket if they wanted to - lots of clanging and slashing and wailing, more about intensity and texture than anything else. Then after each song, they'd all shuffle round one place and swap instruments, ready to throttle the shit out of something else...

My friends hated them BTW, but what the hell did they know anyway?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah griller is really great: if anyone has a copy of the live alb and could tape that for me then lets trade plz!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Slightly off-topic here: thinking about Griller again, and I just remembered that Tim Hodgkinson (of Henry Cow) was involved with that album. I think he'd played with Ut earlier than that too. I saw him playing with Kevin Martin's band God about a dozen years ago as well, they did a really noisy gig in London with all these big pounding tribal drums and stuff. And he was doing improv stuff with Lol Coxhill round that time too.

Last time I saw his name in print was on an article he'd done about Siberian ritual and shamanic music that was published in some musicological journal or other. I *must* get round to properly investigating this man, I've got a hunch that there'd be some terrific stuff going on there...

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

My God, just found this re: Hodgkinson...

He made a record with Skullflower - the man's a friggin' champ! The Work sound great too. From 1980:

"For the International Festival of New Music at Reims, this group prepared a set of highly structured instrumental music. But in summer began a process of collective song-writing and the emphasis moved towards rhythm, noise, and the unmuted clash of electric guitars..."

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i think he's on _argon_ (the skullflower record most skullflower fans hate) and _adieu all you judges_ (the skullflower/ramleh split, which runs a close second).

ut is great, i've heard everything except _griller_ and it's all been pretty cool. i do wish they'd reissue it, though.

what about jacqui ham's post-ut group dial? can dial get some love? _infraction_ has to be some of the ugliest basement rock since prime dead c.

your null fame (yournullfame), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

argon isn't too bad (though not their best).

'griller' is also on slsk so if you have it then get to it null.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

NickB - yeah, the Work is great!! Their Slow Crimes disc is the only one I've heard, but it kicks my ass.

REISSUES! Mute is putting out Griller and In Gut's House in August. I pray for bonus material, even though I have cd-r's of Early Live Life, Conviction, and some other stuff. :D

Parts 1 and 2 of a great recent 3-part interview are now up at Warped Reality, along with several choice mp3s.

An acquaintance recently described Ut as sounding "like Sleater-Kinney if S-K had been a lot more original." I think this does both bands a disservice but there might be a particle of truth in it.

Great news!

For the longest time, I could only hear "Evangelist" (from In A Gut's House) off that Blast First! comp Nothing Short Of Total War, which was all mastered on one track, so I had to fast forward to the track manually to grab it.

M@tt He1geson, Rendolent Ding-Dong (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

It does and then some.

Next we will need a CD of the Gynecologists, Nina Canal's pre-Ut no wave band. Apparently the only extant recording, a live tape recorded by Dan Graham, is in the possession of one T. Moore.

I've got Griller & Early Live Life on LP but still need the other stuff.

The Mute site gives 3 October as the release date for both reissues. Doesn't look like there'll be any extra material on them.

Anyone who doesn't know the track needs to listen to Canker.

YES. It's on their MySpace page. (Equally awesome from Griller: "Safe Burning" and "Rummy.") ...Their MySpace page describes them as "Indie / Alternative / Grunge." WAHT.

Did these guys actually invent Throwing Muses?

Ha, the same thing has crossed my mind more than once.

(Bruce Russell reviewed these reissues in wire.)

Hm. It's not online, is it?

xero (xero), Thursday, 21 September 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

Jacqui Ham is putting out a new CD with her band Dial soon as well.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 21 September 2006 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

Cool! Dial's album Infraction (1997) is still available from Forced Exposure. It has been described to me as "noisy ramblings a la Dead C, though w/ a drum machine [...] The first tune sounds like Dead C crossed w/ Big Black." MUST. BUY.

xero (xero), Thursday, 21 September 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

Curious to hear the new album. I haven't listened to Infraction in a long time.

Apparently there was an Ut reunion show in London last week. It was unannounced and only four songs were played (Big Wing, Hotel, Swallow, Confidential) but there are other shows planned.

was at that brooklyn show. they were good but they literally took anywhere from 1-5 minutes in between every song. really kinda killed the momentum!

original bgm, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

well, it was their first headlining gig in almost 20 years.

death panel of the mods (Edward III), Tuesday, 9 November 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, I still had a good time. not a diss. just gave things a basement show vibe, which has its charms.

it was pretty disorienting because I couldn't see them at all (stage wasn't elevated) and they didn't really address the audience in between the songs either. I just found out they were switching instruments by reading this thread!

Is there any authoritative info on how their name is pronounced, btw? Regarding orthography, I see that discogs use all-caps ("UT"), while e.g. Wikipedia and musicbrainz go with "Ut". Silent-H "Hut"? "Oot"? "U.T."?

Of the top of my head, I think the track on the soul jazz comp was earlier. In Gut's House is pretty great though I mostly return to two longtime faves...Evangelist and Mosquito Botticelli.

the drummer makes a big difference to the feel of the music. not sure who he was, looks like he also played with the pastels at some point. saw them live a few times around this point. but that was as the usual three piece all swapping instruments between songs

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Friday, 10 May 2024 09:54 (one year ago)

Griller was the first one I bought and I was a little disappointed with it at first, probably because all I knew about them was they were a "no wave" band, and I expected them to sound like Teenage Jesus & The Jerks or something. I bought Early Live Life next which was a bit more like that. of course I grew to love Griller after I'd listened to it a few times

Colonel Poo, Friday, 10 May 2024 09:59 (one year ago)

faintly wondering if "charlie dinsdale" (= the drummer on several tracks, tho not all) is maybe actually a pseudonym, for some arcane in-indie industry reason

if not, the pastels and ut is a p strong CV lol, he shd be inducted into RaRHoF

mark s, Friday, 10 May 2024 10:32 (one year ago)

i mean he's just "charlie d" on the LP sleeve but discogs says it"s "charlie dinsdale"

mark s, Friday, 10 May 2024 10:41 (one year ago)

fwiw it looks like the only Pastels release he was on was their collab with Jad Fair, which might make it more likely it's the same person
