I have a slight feeling this album does not sound like its source of artistic inspiration, but feel free to prove me wrong.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 May 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Cex: he's both a hero and an idiot!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(er because the Iggy rekkid was inspired by the same style of portraiture that was used for the Bowie rekkid and er yeah)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

the song i heard sounds like he wants to be the streets

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the song i heard sounds like he wants to be the streets

Well, he'd fit right at home on ILE, then.

I Invented Cynicism (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

haha yes, because ile likes the streets, right? haha

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

ILX is the streets, motherfux0rz. And we are watching.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I still got love for ya.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

sigh. i'd love to defend my Baltimore brother to the death, but i feel like it's a lost cause around here, or anywhere that the discourse begins with the phrase "that nutty Cex". the odd-numbered tracks on the first half of Being Ridden are fucking killer, though.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 11 May 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Fret not, Al, I actually like Cex myself, have a couple of albums around. But that cover is almost asking for it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 May 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

he looks a little like mike skinner in that photo

robin (robin), Sunday, 11 May 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

He looks like a composite of: Mike Skinner, Justin, Ian Curitis. Shame his music doesn't sound like that.

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 11 May 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

*zing*, obv.

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 11 May 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

lol, thats actually a perfect description cozen...

robin (robin), Sunday, 11 May 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

while we're on the subject of the BR cover art, although I don't really have much interest in listening to the instrumental version of it, i thought the modified cover was kind of novel:

http://www.rjyan.com/images/discog/a8bri.jpg

but then, I got the new Kanye West instrumentals mixtape, which has a similiar thing going on (complete with the intro track of Kanye speaking muffled through the tape and then ripping it off):

http://www.mixtapekings.com/images/hiphop/ferris_bueller_plain_plat-behind_the_beats-170.jpg

maybe this is a cliche idea that's been done a hundred times and i just never saw it before, but it strikes me as a funny coincidence, especially because they're probably my 2 favorite people making music right now.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 11 May 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the song they ar eplaying ont he college station here sounds like a huge improvement over 'tall, dark and handcuffed' which even al has to admit was awful. i love role model and most of oops...

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 11 May 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

TD&H had some missteps, but don't sleep on the tracks w/ Height, and a few others (Cuts, Bad Acne, Ghost Rider)...it's kind of a shame that a lot of people seem to hate on that record for the fun parts...it's really only the more dramatic, BR-ish stuff on Handcuffed that sucks. i like the more straight-up rap stuff on Being Ridden, but some of it sinks a little too far into Anticon territory for me.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 11 May 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

cex sux

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Monday, 12 May 2003 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 12 May 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

just took this off after three listens. gah, what crap

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 16 May 2003 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Huh. That actually sounds pretty interesting. (Forgive me... "intersting").

Ben Boyerrr, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 09:04 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, not paid any attention to Cex for ages but just ordered a tape on the strength of that description

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 09:16 (eighteen years ago)

Interesting. I was wondering what exactly that tape was about, based on the cryptic description on his website a while back:

http://blumpy.org/rjyan/?page=archive (entry dated 9/14/2007)

Rjyan's put out seemingly a dozen cassette-only releases in the last couple years that I see in True Vine now and then, but I haven't really felt compelled to keep up with them (especially ones that are some kind of meta joke on an artist I've never listened to like Girl Talk), I got the Sand Cats tape recently but still haven't listened to it. That CD Sketchi that he put out earlier in the year was alright, though.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 10:58 (eighteen years ago)

Jesus, I had just figured out that a "mixtape" can now be a CD, but this is an actual tape?

Ben Boyerrr, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

I love that the section is called "Know Your Product" but they don't know that Cex and Girl Talk have been best buddies for like a decade.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

hey, I write for that section and know Cex's work pretty well, but wasn't aware of any connection between them besides that they're both tight with Dan Deacon. but way to zing a generic review column name!

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

Alex that's a fair zing and you know it

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

it all seems pretty lame

chaki, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

i agree, whatever the intent I don't much see the point in it. but then I think shit like Girl Talk is pretty lame to begin with.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

thank god cex has saved the dangerous blackness of rap from girl talk

and what, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)
