I am a big Nirvana and Foo Fighters fan.

Tell me, who is better for any reason.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 11 May 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

As if there's actually a debate? FOO FIGHTERS EVERY DAMN TIME!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 11 May 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

`Cos they're better, of course.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you know when the new Killing Joke CD comes out with Dave drumming on all tracks?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Gee, I'm not sure if that's the kind of thing Alex would know ;)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Silly boy, Alex, she's not asking if you know that, she's asking when. Be nice, now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 May 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you know when the new Killing Joke CD comes out with Dave drumming on all tracks?

Oh, whoops! Apologies. I didn't see the "when". Thanks, Ned.

In any event, the first single, "Loose Cannon" might be out as early as June (featuring a re-recording of "Wardance" as a b-side), but the full album probably won't see the light of day until sometime after July 20th, with a tour following sometime starting as early as August. Grohl will not tour with the band, however. His place will be filled by monster drummer Ted Parsons...ex-Swans/Prong.

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Sunday, 11 May 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Nirvana are way, way, way overrated, Aja.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 11 May 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't listen to Alex, he hates fun.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 12 May 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

nirvana is awesome. foo fighters are overrated.

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Monday, 12 May 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i vote nirvana, but i like Dave's voice more than Kurt's

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 12 May 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Nirvana are overrated in the sense that they're only about 35% as good as the music press makes them out to be. Ergo, very good indeed.

I've decided I like side 2 of Nevermind a lot more than side 1.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 12 May 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Nirvana is the shit. kurts voice over Daves, and i'll take In Utero over anything by the foos.

, Monday, 12 May 2003 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The first Foo album makes Nirvana pale in comparison.
Only a few Nirvana songs had real lasting value, thought most
of them were pleasant punk ditties. Foo 1 was a classic
piece, though. Following albums were increasingly overproduced
and underwhelming, though, and their single from the new
album was so crappy I haven't investigated it.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Monday, 12 May 2003 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, it was me.

rexJr., Monday, 12 May 2003 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh! sorry for my "sh**" comment there Aja, i didn't know you were twelve. i ment to say Nirvana were way better :-)

rexJr., Monday, 12 May 2003 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

nirvana are much better. the reason being: they wrote much catchier songs, simple as that. i used to think of the foos as being quite a good singles band, but they look less like this with every single they release, these days. grohl just doesn't kurt's songwriting touch.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 12 May 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

and yes, nirvana are overrated, but they are still good.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 12 May 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Foo Fighters good. Nirvana GRATE!

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Monday, 12 May 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't listen to Alex, he hates fun.

If "fun" means fooling yourself into thinking that Nirvana were the messiah and/or that they were original in any remote way, then yes, I hate fun.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 12 May 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Nirvana for me.

Don't see the appeal of the Foos at all. But the last few times I've seen them on telly playing live they have been really good.

In Utero is my favourite.

And Nevermind is obviously Nirvana's worst album^*

mei (mei), Monday, 12 May 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

* I loved it when Steve Albini said that.

mei (mei), Monday, 12 May 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a draw, altough if you take "influence"-both good and bad- I'd pick the Foos on the account that they've inspired fewer shitty bands.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Monday, 12 May 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I have lsitened to the fOO fIGHTERS cover of Baker Street four times today, and it's not even 10 a.m. That song rules. Also, i love how Everlong has that Joy Division style bass....very nice. I've only heard a few Nirvana songs they play on the radio.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Monday, 12 May 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I like more Nirvana songs then Foo Fighter songs, but Nirvana's catalogue is static (unless they role out unreleased... which still might be good). So eventually Foo Fighters might end up eclypsing them, song wise, but they will never be able to pull off Nirvana's best trick: Killing Hair Metal. If they hadn't you might be asking who's better Faster Pussy Cat or Ratt, and that would just be sad.
Have a nice day.

Brandon Welch (Brandon Welch), Monday, 12 May 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a Nirvana camper. The last Foo Fighters album that did anything for me was "The Color & the Shape." They're getting cheekier with each album. (Though that's kind of endearing in a way, I suppose.)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 12 May 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Foo Fighters. Better musicians in my opinion.

Filip, Monday, 12 May 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Neither are gods, but I'm definitely picking Nirvana. If you're gonna sing gibberish, at least make it murky.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 May 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

you mean "creakier," don't you, there, Jeanne?

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 12 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Creakier AND cheekier.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 12 May 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Grohl had cooler hair back in the day. Nirvana wins.

Wired Flounder (Wired Flounder), Monday, 12 May 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The Foo Fighters have much, much better videos.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 12 May 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Kurt's dead, therefore we shan't be hearing any more of his music. The Foo Fighters, meanwhile, are still alive and well....thus they have the opportunity to grow and develop, experiment with styles, mature with age, and become a long-lasting, viable musical entity, unlike the overrated sacred cow that Nirvana has become.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 12 May 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

so does Good Charlotte. What's your point?

And "You're Know You're Right," the latest Nirvana song, tops anything the Foos have done since "Everlong." Kurt evolves from beyond the grave!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 May 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"You Know You're Right" was one of the most obnoxious singles I've heard in a long time, actually. It reminded me of when my cat died. It was excruciating.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 12 May 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

....Nirvana or Foo Fighters?
It's like asking if shit's better than diahorraea....

russ t, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 08:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard "Lithium" on the radio last night and actually felt my body tingle. Then they played Sum 41 and it was even better.

I think I want to like Nirvana more than I'm actually able to do at this point. Still, I can barely recall any FF tunes to mind though some sound OK when they're playing.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

>"As if there's actually a debate? FOO FIGHTERS EVERY DAMN TIME!

shhhh everyone, I can hear a voice yelling something...

"ALEX! ALEX!....YOURE OUT OF YOUR FUCKING MIND!"

Thanks my better part I knew this was a non brainer.

bi -polar, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

thus they have the opportunity to grow and develop, experiment with styles, mature with age, and become a long-lasting, viable musical entity

Dude Alex, you writing for "Rolling Stone" now?

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

DON'T. CALL. ME. DUDE.

Seriously, though.....who really gives a damn?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Scrolling back a bit....

but they will never be able to pull off Nirvana's best trick: Killing Hair Metal. If they hadn't you might be asking who's better Faster Pussy Cat or Ratt, and that would just be sad. Have a nice day.

Ah, but really now....look around you....the glory days of Grunge/Alternative are now just as remote as the hoary days of Hair Metal. Thus, debating the merits of "Don't Change that Song" by Faster Pussycat is certainly no less ridiculous in 2003 than attempting to decipher the lyrical imagery of "Scentless Apprentice."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

DON'T. CALL. ME. DUDE.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Dear god, being forced to be either one of the guys, if I was forced to choose between either or else, would destroy me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Clearly Ashton Kutcher is superior to the other dude. He's the new Keanu Reeves!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

You're onto something there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ashton's a honey!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yikes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Woah. That's rough.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Ashton's photo on the cover of the new Rolling Stone. I'm betting the photographer was chanting, "Show yr tits! Show yr tits! Show yr tits!"

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Ashton's photo on the cover of the new Rolling Stone. I'm betting the photographer was chanting, "Show yr tits! Show yr tits! how yr tits!"

I found that cover so repugnant that it made me want to subscribe to Rolling Stone just so I could call in and agrily CANCEL my subscription.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a free three year subscription to RS a couple of months ago...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

In the course of about a month, they've had Lisa Marie Presley, Good Charlotte, the American Flag and Ashton Whatsis on the cover.

What on earth is Jann Wenner thinking? (insert joke here).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"My job is to sell magazines. I like money. Maybe I should put stuff on my magazine cover that American people seem to like so that I can sell magazines and make money."

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Were the magazine in question People -- a magazine that never pretended to anything other than just that -- that would be an acceptable answer.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe Stone is just past pretending? And I enjoy RS, actually. Blender too!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Jann Wenner is the most annoying man on earth, in my opinion. I still can't get over how fucking lame Rolling Stone's XMas party is, like several years after the fact. It STILL to this day haunts me. I actually LEFT their party to return to a real estate party, what does this say about the state of Rolling Stone? The big excitement was Kurt Fucking Loder=u r so gay. Blender is way better than RS.

Seriously, Ashton Kutcher is too pretty boy for me.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

If more people could hang at the Clear Channel Xmas party the company wouldn't be in this mess...

Fricke's a nice guy, but I can't think of anyone at RS I'd wanna have a drink with ever since Jancee Dunn left.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

You'd have drinks with Jancee Dunn? WTF?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

She looks exactly like a girl that I had a crush on high school.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"in high school."

(i don't find her particularly attractive, it's just that the similarity is eerie)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

You are so indie rock, jesus. Tiffany Samantha was right.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Drinks with Jancee Dunn sounds about as pleasurable as a back-crack-&-sack wax. No thanks.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Nirvana songs - give me goosebumps, make adrenaline & seratonin glands fire up in my brain, make my body rhythmically spasm beyond my control in great ways

Foo Fighters songs - there are so many I can't even tell apart!

Even after not listening to Nirvana for almost 2 years (between 2000 & 2002), I still occasionally would get "Polly" or "Territorial Pissings" or "Drain You" or "Something in the Way" stuck in my head out of the blue. It kinda bugs me that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was their big hit, when it was one of my least favorite of all their songs.

Some Foos songs I like, and like Alex mentioned they do still have the capacity for growth and change, but their music, to me at least, misses that sortuv raw primal instinctual monstrous soul-growl that Nirvana, to me, embodied. They weren't "good" musicians, they weren't that particularly cutting edge or original, but they're music made me want to cry, laugh, scream, make love, fly, drive, crap my pants...all at the same time.

For once in a taking sides, I actually can! How cool!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Drinks with Jancee Dunn sounds about as pleasurable as a back-crack-&-sack wax.

I'll take "Phrases I didn't need to hear" for $500, Alex.

Going back to the subject at hand, I would just like to say I never really liked Nirvana very much at all.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Anybody with a beef with Jann Wenner should watch the movie Perfect. The movie ends with him grinding his hips at an aerobics class while leering. Available at Blockbuster.

I think this thread might have the word "overrated" more than any other.

Such a useless term. If I were an artist and someone said "you're overrated," I'd say, "People like me too much? Thank you, I'll take it."
