Agreeing with David Toop... stranger things have happened

I was leafing thru an old copy of Wire the other day when I came across a statement from David Toop to the effect that the reissue of "Lawrence of Newark" by Larry Young had "reminded him of why he started buying records in the first place". May I take this opportunity to agree heartily with Toopy on this one - this is a fantastic record. I just got it for the ludicrous sum of £3. And for anyone based in London, I recommend you hot-foot it down to the record stall in Goodge Place (off Goodge Street) and see if they have any copies left. And while you are there sign the petition to prevent Camden Council from outlawing the stall - I've got more bargains there in the last year than every other record shop in London put together.

can you tell me abt the record dada? I'm interested. what time does the record stall open?

Julio, the workings of that record stall are very mysterious, some days it's there and some it's not. If it's raining they usually don't bother showing. "Lawrence of Newark" (great title, great sleeve!) is a kind of like cross between 70s Miles, Sun Ra, Santana and "Interstellar Overdrive" - dare I say it, it's even slightly proggy but actually quite Latin-influenced too. James Blood Ulmer is on it, as is Pharoah Sanders (uncredited), there's a cello in there, several drummers and at least ten percussionists - it's a blast.

''Julio, the workings of that record stall are very mysterious, some days it's there and some it's not.''

so where do you turn to from goodge street?

damn, it will be raining for most of this week.

I'll try and get this. it sounds good.

It's on Goodge Place. It's not all Larry Young and suchlike unfortunately, but it's very good for coming across stuff like the Mad River album (not very good) or Amon Duul II's "Made In Germany" (the full double album and completely bonkers) for two quid. There's usually a whole lot of pretty straight jazz, if you're into that sorta stuff, I'm not especially.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 12 May 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

it depends what jazz it is or who i suppose. but if you can get those kind of bargains for two quid then its a def worth going(especially as I work abt 5-10 mins walk from there).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 12 May 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually Julio, last time I was there I saw an Evan Parker album for £2 which I didn't bother buying because I'd already exceeded my CD spending limit for the day. It was with two Italian geezers who I'd never heard of and it looked a bit cheap and tatty so I didn't bother. The internet tells me it was "Improvvisazioni" a trio with Mauro Orselli and Antonello Salis. It's probably a masterpiece and I wasn't even prepared to pay two quid for it - fool!!!!

if it wasn't raining today I would have gone out NOW!!!

spacey-freak out stuff is kinda passe of late huh?

Chip Morningstar (bob), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck passe

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, really. fuck it. Because someone played me Lawrence of Newark a few weeks ago and it was just about the most beautiful record I'd heard in years. It made me feel, despite being curled up on a sofa in a tiny flat in Plumstead at the time, like I could fly. It's a gorgeous, funny, unselfconscious treasure of a record that grooves like all the musicians are laughing and frowning and dancing like elephants, all at the same time.

Sure it's 'passe'. It's from the early 70s. Your point is...?
