New entries this week – Hell Is For Heroes (#39), Terri Walker (#38), Groove Armada featuring Sunshine Anderson (remember her? #31, anyway), HIM (#30 – jel will presumably be over the moon), Saffron Hill featuring Ben Onono (#28) and Dead Or Alive (#23). 15 new entries this week sees a lot of old dreck finally do the collapse, including – YES! – Delta Goodrem down SEVEN! Get the friggydiggydiggydoodaheh INNNNNNNNNNNN!!!

20) KYM MARSH – Cry

Bizarrely long-running one, this. Sounds like it’s been remixed with extra echoey bits and backing vox and stuff. Maybe I’ve just got the radio on a wee bit loud. It’s still dull as all hell, though.

19) JUNIOR SENIOR – Move Your Feet

Longest runner this week, sez Wes, though obviously he’s not allowed to tell us how long because the official UK chart company owns that information. And him. Presumably. I still haven’t bought the album, but if the New Pornographers is out tomorrow then I think I might, if only out of gratitude for making my Sunday afternoons a little less shit for the past month or so. It’s grate, really it is.

18) THE DANDY WARHOLS – We Used To Be Friends (NEW ENTRY)

First new entry inside your UK official top hot 20 soaraway singles countdown on this sizzling summer Sunday afternoon and it’s shit. Looked like utter twats on Jonathan Ross, but even ignoring that this just screams “XFM C-LIST”, with regulatory shitty ‘electro influence’ and pseudo-clever lyrics – “If ever again, a greeting I send to you…” – dear god, it’s like everyone’s suddenly forgotten how shit The New Electrics were...

17) SNAP! – Rhythm Is A Dancer (NEW ENTRY)

“Rhythm is a dancer, smoking gives you cancer, needles give you HIV…” Man, it’s just like I’m 8 again. Before you know it, I’ll be finding David Baddiel funny and everything. However, this is a slightly dodgy Dave Pearce-esque reworkage, that appears to have completely written out Turbo D’s bits – not a good thing, because all you’re left with is the chorus going over and over. Not much fun.

16) ROOM 5 featuring OLIVER CHEATHAM – Make Luv

Slowly slipping out of the public consciousness. Fingers crossed.

15) THE ANDROIDS – Do It With Madonna (NEW ENTRY)

It’s not often that the top 40 proves the assertion that you can’t polish a turd, but this is a blessed example of that – having been on CD:UK for about three months solid, all over the radio and shit, and they can’t even go top 10. UK Record Buying Public, you are fucking beauties, and I salute you (till I find you’ve put Good Charlotte in the top 10).The tune itself – The Rembrandts go comedy. With transvestites. But even worse than that sounds.

14) DMX – X Gon’ Give It To Ya

Oh, to be a radio editor for this man. The intro sounds like it’s just occasional snatches of him breathing… Dysfunctional as all hell, and it still rules. His growling is particularly fantastic.

13) RONAN KEATING – The Long Goodbye

Ah shit. I was just starting to enjoy myself, and I forgot this was coming. I’ll just nod off for four minutes or so, then. Still, at least it’s down ten from last week, so hopefully it’ll be out of the top twenty completely next week.

Shit on a stick, this is dull. I mean, I know that’s obvious, but I honestly cannot remember the last time a song numbed me to this extent… fuck off Keating. Just… fuck off.

12) FEEDER – Forget About Tomorrow (NEW ENTRY)

Feeder nick the strings off of U2’s Beautiful Day, and use them a tiny bit better. Obviously this is still pretty bleh and the lyrics are rubbish, simply by virtue of this being A Feeder Single, but dammit, they just seem like such dreadfully nice people, which is better than, say… U2.

11) KELLY ROWLAND – Can’t Nobody

Perhaps I was a bit harsh on this last week. But only a bit – it still feels too damn long, and it just doesn’t really go anywhere. She was naff on TOTP as well.

Into the hot 10 now. Wes says “20 – KYM MARSH – CRY!” like he’s a fucking field marshal or something.

By the way – Emma B – why?

10) LISA MAFFIA – All Over

Still alright-ish. The horrendous Game Stars, on which she made an appearance, was repeated yesterday lunchtime. Full review here.

9) BUSTED – You Said No

Three weeks inside the top ten. So it goes.

8) 50 CENT – In Da Club

Is never actually going to leave the top 10. Ever. Seriously. Everything else is collapsing down the chart like a wedding cake mounted on toothpicks, and this is only down one. I don’t know if I actually have an opinion on this song anymore. It’s not so much a single, more a fact of life now…

More interestingly, there’s still five new entries to come – Husan, Cheekies, R Kelly, Big Brovaz and Good Charlotte.

7) BHANGRA KNIGHTS & HUSAN – Husan (NEW ENTRY)

Hey hey hey, it’s the new Babylon Zoo! Song off a popular ad, snatch of the song played on the ad is fantastic and everyone thinks, “Wow, TUNE!” Then they hear the rest of the song – the ‘Zoo had their “images of fascist votes” bit, this one has a man rapping in the style of Partners In Kryme. As such, it becomes a bit shit, and Panjabi MC pisses all over it.

6) GOOD CHARLOTTE – Girls And Boys (NEW ENTRY)

Oh dear. It ALMOST sounds like it’s gonna be alright, the opening’s all sort of 80’s synth stuff, almost like All Of My Heart – then he goes and opens his fucking mouth. He’s the American Kelly Jones, the way his voice is unbearably mannered, the way he sings every half-decently so-and-so lyric like it is THE CLEVEREST THING IN THE WORLD EVER, the way every sight of his fucking face makes want to KILL… it’s better than their last one. But it’s still cack.

5) CRAIG DAVID ft. FALLACY – Rise and Fall

Wes still reckons Fallacy is actually Sting in disguise. Put him right – buy Big ‘n’ Bashy tomorrow. If it’s 2 CD’s, get the one with the DJ Die mix on.

4) TOMCRAFT – Loneliness

Best thing on TOTP, still doing quite well this week. Which, for a reason I just can’t quite fathom, is actually really heartwarming.

3) THE CHEEKY GIRLS – Take Your Shoes Off (NEW ENTRY)

It’s nicked the backing from the original NES Super Mario Bros., I think. It’s shite, obviously, but it does raise this question – Lou Bega only had one top 40 hit, but it was a #1. The Cheeky Girls have had two top 40 hits, but neither got to #1. Who wins? (Answer: Las Ketchup, cos they were great)

2) BIG BROVAZ – Favourite Things (NEW ENTRY)

It’s a decent sample. And that’s about as good as it gets, because this would appear to be a tribute song to a column the editor of the Redbrick Music Section, Mr Dan Smith, once wrote on how to dress hip-hop stylee, in that they have nicked all the brand names and shoehorned them into their rubbish rap stylings. However, Dan is great, and this sucks – hip-hop as approximated by some people who presumably enjoy being ‘street’ by driving down Brixton High Street with Richard Blackwood’s solo album booming out of the speakers. Shite.

1) R KELLY – Ignition (NEW ENTRY)

In which Kelly leaves the Earth, and appears to be orbiting a wee planet all of his own. Nice, floaty, occasionally bouncy (as signified by him repeating “Bounce” about nine or ten times in a row), like Usher would be if Usher wasn’t crap. Even ignoring the wonderfully ham-fisted sex references (“I’mma stick my key in your ignition”) and misplaced namechecking of Murder She Wrote, really rather good, and definitely one of the better number ones this year. Not as good as Big ‘n’ Bashy, though. Which is out tomorrow.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 11 May 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Game Stars review is actually here. I hope.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 11 May 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

And out tomorrow, from what I can remember:

Mr Reds vs. DJ Skribble
Sean Paul
Girls Aloud
Staind
Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster
Martina Topley-Bird
Fallacy featuring Tubby T

That's at least four top singles there, couple half-decent-ish ones, and Staind. Buy Fallacy, and try to pretend that Girls Aloud aren't a shoo-in for the top slot.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 11 May 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i am glad i did not have to hear that lot ! Swygart R U grounded on Sunday, and as punishment forced to listen to the top 40 show?

probably the best single in the chart this week
re: Dead Or Alive - You spin me round (Like a record) - this was a hit in 1985, when i was a 4th former and 15 year old skool kid.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 11 May 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, I just do this for fun. And there is the odd decent tune in there - Dead Or Alive has been remixed to destruction by someone, but it still comes out OK.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 11 May 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I should mention that I really like these threads, William.

Wes still reckons Fallacy is actually Sting in disguise.

I always thought Sting was pretty phallusy, so perhaps Wes hasn't seen it written down.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 11 May 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Gamestars review actually somewhere circa here , what with Blogger not liking that week's bloggery.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 11 May 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and, yes man, these threads are easily the best thing on ILM at the moment.

My favourite parts of "Ignition Remix" are the "toot toot, beep beep" bits, possibly included so Mr Kelly's songs can be included in nursery school singalongs. I'm not implying anything.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 11 May 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't Dizzee out tomorrow as well?

Obviously GA will get number 1 because it's great, but it'd be nice if Reds vs Skribble got in quite high too.

Nick H, Sunday, 11 May 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

In which Kelly leaves the Earth, and appears to be orbiting a wee planet all of his own.
the planet...of...little...girls...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 11 May 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Dizzee Rascal? Might be, but I dunno - I just did that based on what Wes said was out and what I could remember being out. Is there a half-decent site for new single releases?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 11 May 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i really hate that Good Charlotte track - the 'girls don't like boy don't like girls don't like boys' bit or however it goes is too close to Blur for one thing, and the whole thing just sounds totally corporate and 80s...but not in a good way. Sum 41 is better innit.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Wahoo! HIM rule! < /overthemoon>

Corporate and '80's = sign of a great song! :)

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

HIM are Bam Margera's favourite band, for what it's worth.

Corporate and 80s is also the sign of those weird things you can put an imprint of your hand or face on if you lean against as well, so its not all good.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"Toot toot, beep beep" = chorus to Bad Girls = R. IS INNOCENT!

possibly.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean the ITV drama?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i predicto:

#1 Girls Aloud (i can't memorise any of them by face)
#3 Mr Reds vs. DJ Skribble (i find the whole breakbeat pattern and Busta kinda outdated here, but i sense this is pretty popular right now)
#7 Sean Paul (not sure i've heard this yet)
#13 Fallacy featuring Tubby T (again, not heard - any good?)
#24 Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster (this one's not bad at all)
#26 Staind (not heard, don't care)
#34 Martina Topley-Bird (actually very 'Maxinquayesque' thanks to Tricky's rasping cameo, but too light and festivaly for its own good maybe)

Corporate and '80's = sign of a great song!
not always - 'Hip To Be Square' being a case in point

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Fallacy featuring Tubby T will reaffirm your life with its very brilliance, stevem. Unless, as an individual, you have a tendency to be violently or hideously wrong.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, the 70's hit for (I think) Donna Summer (it could be Gloria Gaynor, though. Really can't remember). Juliet Roberts covered it anyway.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

jel: Corporate and '80's = sign of a great song! :)
stevem: not always - 'Hip To Be Square' being a case in point
Well, the 80's part == grebtness, the corporate part == pants.
And 'Hip to Be Square' can be viewed as deeply subversive if you make the assumption Huey was being sarcastic.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

If Fallacy even gets close to #13 I'll be over the moon. Of Mars. Hell, even getting to the top 40 would be an achievement - unless I've misremembered, only Sean Paul, Girls Aloud and Mr Red are on the R1 playlist, and I dunno how many people Fallacy has got play off. It's single of the year (Excluding the Delgados, who are too great for mere 'lists') anyhow, and you will buy it cos it rocks bells.

Think you've got most right, but I'm not sure if Martina's got much chance of the top 40, maybe not even the top 50. Josh Homme plays guitar on it, though. And Eighties Matchbox... hmm. It's good, but their other singles were better. Probably low forties, though 24 might get them on TOTP. Which would be classier than Eton...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i think 'Psychosis Safari' made the top 30 didnt it? that was a surprise

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

#26, but it was a very quiet week. Annoyingly, considering how great they are, the 80's MBLD are also a bit street-teamed, which must have contributed. Fingers crossed anyway, cos they are brilliant and such.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem I am sure you *have* heard "Get Busy", and that it will be top 5 (at least) next week. Fallacy is great, but Sean Paul is greater.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

William you mentioned that Kid Kreme record last week, is the one in question "Hypnotising" or "Hypnotised". Er....you may have no idea but worth a try all the same.

It's been around for almost 2 years and it seems odd it's being released or pushed now.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I will re-publish my cheeky girls review:

"The Cheeky Girls – Take Your Shoes Off

“Take your shoo-sies off, woo!” Ah, the Cheeky Girls are back and seemingly reprogrammed. Objective: prove that the Cheeky Song was merely a statement of intent, that chart domination is inevitable. This new song is the best synth pop song in a very long time, it sounds like the Silicon Teens with it’s melancholy synth beat tune and otherworldly vocodor-ised vocals. There is a sense of sadness and cool detachment at the core of this track, an acceptance that pop stardom won’t last, of built in obsoleteness. Do androids dream of the Cheeky Girls? I think so."

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't mind the Cheeky Girls. But I don't want to hear them at Rye Harbour.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan - not a clue - doesn't appear to be in the top 100 in any case.

Though, intriguingly, Senor Coconut's cover of Smoke on the Water is. At #94.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a sense of sadness and cool detachment at the core of this track, an acceptance that pop stardom won’t last, of built in obsoleteness.

isn't this just a fancier way of saying nobody gives a toss about this track, not even the Cheeky Girls themselves (especially not, you might say)?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps, but I'm saying that's a bad thing.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

after extensive research, i can confirm they're not better than the Vengaboys

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

What the hell is taking so long for that Sean Paul song to get released???

Evan (Evan), Monday, 12 May 2003 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

HGreat to see Deador Alive back in the charts - and the remixes are pretty damn excellent. I just hope they make it onto TOTP....!

Who buys Cheeky Girls records? Maybe Calum due to the 'provocative' pose on the sleeve? They remind me of council estate birds who work in Kwik Save.....

russ t, Monday, 12 May 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

they remind me of two praying manti in hotpants

stevem (blueski), Monday, 12 May 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I think the Good Charlotte tune is fab. Rich+famous got on my nearves too much, but the new one's a 3 1/2 mins of teen pop-angst. All good stuff.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 12 May 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Girls Aloud single rocks HARD.

j0e (j0e), Monday, 12 May 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the nu POP EYE rocks hard too. cheers, Mr Swygart

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 12 May 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and ta for the compliments, BTW. Must thank JTN for encouraging me to start doing this again.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 12 May 2003 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

dizzee is out 26/5/03.

that mr reds tune is ancient isnt it? i heard that about 3 years ago! it sounds like it too. whats it doing floating around now?

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 12 May 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It's on the A-List at Radio 1. It did sound very, very familiar when Whiley played it this morning.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 12 May 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

According to Playlouder, this is how the midweeks are looking:

1 - R Kelly

2 - Girls Aloud

4 - Lisa Scott-Lee

6 - Sean Paul

9 - Bon Jovi

14 - The Wildhearts (I bought this, actually, it is great)

16 - Mr Redz & DJ Skribble

17 - Shed 7

20 - Bone Thugs 'N' Harmony

23 - Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster (I have all three versions of this - the vinyl just looked dead nice, you know?)

24 - Southampton FC (amazingly enough, not available in Croydon)

28 - Staind

36 - Less Than Jake

Unless they've missed something, Fallacy isn't in there. Which is a bit bloody annoying, to be quite frank.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i would like to see the midweeks for this in Portsmouth:

Southampton FC (amazingly enough, not available in Croydon)

ZILCH FOR THE SCUMMERS !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Martian, honey?

Fuck off.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Arsenal obviously couldn't afford to do a cup single since they only have £15 million to spend this summer.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be surprised if R Kelly holds off that tremendous Girls Aloud single. I bought the Sean Paul, Fallacy and Clipse singles as well as that this week - best week for singles in a while, for me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Ambrose it's about 3 years old, Stanton Warriors did it and it was on their mix from 3 years ago before they became crap.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The GA single will be mainly bought on Saturday though won't it? The kids are in school at the moment. It'll trounce R Kelly, surely? It's so fucking good it's ridiculous.

Nick H, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought by GA you meant Groove Armada for a minute there - thats how much impact Girls Alahd have made on me i guess

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Shed fucking Seven?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Bon fucking Jovi, come to that?

only three places behind Sean Paul, as well?

blimey.

the Bone Thugs "comeback" has quite an amusing video if only because of the obvious hero-worship they genuinely have for Phil Collins. come on, let's make Fallacy number 39, at least!

robin carmody (robin carmody), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just me or has there been a total media blackout on Sean Paul (at least outside the US)? He's now hit no. 1 in the US and I've yet to read a single thing about him in the Australian media that wasn't written by, um, me - and it's not like his album hasn't been released.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

today was totally weird cross-cultural madness day...in target, in the audio-video section, looking for cd-r's: on all the tv's (on the "target video network" no less), the video for "let's push things forward", on all the radios "get busy."

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)
