Why the hype over "Greenlander" by Pavement?

I was dissapointed on hearing "Greenlander"... yes it's definitely a good song, but from what I heard I expected it to be among their very best. Why the hype?

There's hype?

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

there was hype as I recall. it's a good song, though!

Aaron A., Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

in the 'fork they saying 'malky you hot'

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

What Paul said. I've never heard this song praised at all in the ten years it's been kicking around on compilations and the like.

Do you guys not remember our friend the beebs then?

hstencil, Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i know it from the "Born To Choose" comp., and I like it probably more than any other early Pavement song, but I'm not wild about that stuff so it's not saying much. I would guess it just appeals to the camp that thinks "Here" is their best song, which is pretty large.

Beebs was hot for "Greenlander?" That doesn't sound like him, seeing as the song was commercially available and all. He preferred the more obscure, unreleased songs.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul you are either insane or have the worst memory ever!

(but I still love you)

hstencil, Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like this song. It reminds me of a lot of things, a cold but fun winter where I found some of my best friends, my first girlfriend and doing my mock a-levels, getting drunk a lot etc...

I think the lyrics are some of malkmus's best.

greenlander i believe was the last song officially released with gary young on drums.

that said, listen to the drums on this song and your mind may change.

it's a very wintery song, put it in the freezer and thaw it out in 6 months time.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 12 May 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

also notable for the "lockets and dirt" image which later is reprised on wowee zowie a few years later ("at&t"?)

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 12 May 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, malkmus was a great guitarist (and he still is).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 12 May 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont see how anyone could choose one pavement song over another. they are all brilliant, if you ask me.

benton, Monday, 12 May 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It was hard to get "back in the day". Ergo loads of knobfucks went on and on about it if they were priveliged enough to own it. Then came peer-to-peer.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 12 May 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

next someone will talk about the hype over star wars or parachute pants.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 12 May 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

benton, come sit on uncle gygax!'s lap and we can reminische about the days of yore.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 12 May 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

why doesn't anyone talk about "pueblo?"

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 12 May 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i like pueblo

sporophyte, Monday, 12 May 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

that's more like it!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 12 May 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yanc3y i like the peel session with the extra chorus part and the adlib lyrics thingy.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 12 May 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i've always thought pueblo was THEE overhyped pavesong (along with AT&T). (and grave arch.) good lord i'm dissing one of my all time fave albums!

Aaron A., Monday, 12 May 2003 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Kennel District" might be my favorite track off of Wowee Zowee. A great Spiral Stairs effort.

Brandon Gentry (Brandon Gentry), Monday, 12 May 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

it's one of my favorites of theirs, probably because I heard it when I'd heard of them but not heard anything by them. It has great lyrics and a great sadcore vibe to it. Over the years when I was ineffectually dreaming of going to Iceland I would always think of the "icy frozen north" lyric.

Westie Can Drum!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The best Pavement song ever.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the b-sides on Rattled By The Rush. And Gold Soundz. I have every Pavement single ever! -(I think)

I also have The Arizona Record. :p

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)
