the pointlessness of unsolicited review copies?

Unsolicted promo / review copies? If you are attemtping to launch a small label is there any point to sneeding out hundreds to everyone.. and how do you limit that number?

do some research, target your reviewers carefully... carpet bombing of promos is counterproductive in many ways.

Dude if you include "St Elmo's Fire (2003 Trance Dubb)" as a bonus track they'll be going for $30 on eBay!!

for US college radio, get a hold of the CMJ New Music Report (or whatever the trade paper is called), look at their top 10s and figure out if what you're sending would fit with their sound. that should narrow the field a lot.

Lord knows. We sent out more review copies than we sold actual copies in the end. :-( So glad that someone made money out of it, even if it was just MVE. We did get quite an impressive wad of press, though, so I guess it did some good...

Note to Demon Music: do NOT send me frigging Jive Bunny and ELP records as (a) they will never be reviewed; (b) I had to fumigate the place after throwing them out.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 12 May 2003 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

they sent you Jive Bunny records?!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 12 May 2003 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

They did!! Unbelievable. I mean, don't they bother to check the sort of stuff I review in Uncut? What the hell were they thinking? (obv ans: "they weren't thinking").

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 12 May 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

well, some places just send everything once you're on their mailing list, so you learn to just sell 'em back after awhile. more than anything, I was surprised that they still made Jive Bunny records

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 12 May 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be glad of Jive Bunny records, at least they'd make me laugh. A while back, I actually had to ask a PR company to stop sending me Fischerspooner remix packages etc, though. I was waking up in a good mood most days, opening my mail and finding myself absolutely LIVID within minutes. Of course, a lot of stuff I get sent is shite, but if that's the rough part of music journalism, then it's a pretty smooth ride. The only problem I have is prioritising my listening so I get through all the stuff I'm sent and don't miss out on the good things. Promos are definitely useful, but just need to be well targeted for the benefit of yourselves and the journalists in question. 10 well-placed and nicely followed-up CDRs will do you more good than 200 randomly mailed ones...

(example: Rhino sent me the Yes box set last year even though I never requested it. um, NO.)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 12 May 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Whereas Rhino didn't send me the frigging Jimmy Scott album which I ended up having to go and buy myself ("oh we didn't realise it was Warner Special Products as opposed to Warner Music..." - grrr!).

Okay, I'm really fuckin' sick of this. Who the hell IS Kate, and what band is she in?

David Allen, Monday, 12 May 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ask her NICELY and she might tell you.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 12 May 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 12 May 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Sigh. I don't go on about it cause I generally get a beatdown for "shameless self promotion" if I do, but I used to play guitar in a band called The Lollies. Not heard of us? Yeah, our record company sucked. I mean, we were in Vogue and everything. ;-)

kate, Monday, 12 May 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

if someone sends me a record i really like, i do try to review it, somewhere

anything shit goes straight in the bin, tho

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 May 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)
