"ege bamyasi would be a better starting point, but tago mago is longer and you'll get more for your money" - Value For Money...

What's value for money when it comes to buying an album? Length? Breadth? Quality? How do you tell? I get seriously irritated if I see an album is longer than about 45 minutes thesedays, so for me brevity is more a sign of value than length...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

b=but 1/3 or more of tago mago is totally pointless!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

that's like saying "here's a 72 oz. coke, but 1/3 of this is just fizzy water, but look how BIG the cup is!"

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Aye, hence I pick Ege every time!

No no no; it's like "here's some coke but a third of it is actually ice and the coke is cold enough on it's own already".

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the pointless stuff on Tago Mago.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

well, yeah, and some people like fizzy water. "value" is all relative, in the end.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Like 50% of the albums I've bought the past two months have lasted around 37 minutes.
And you know what? I don't feel cheated at all.
Some of my absolute favorite albums are short as honk, so I'll gladly live with it.

(Ok, admittedly a lot of that stuff was "Nice price" or what have you)

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

CDs were the worst thing that ever happened to hip-hop.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I do like fizzy water - except it's usually called seltzer.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

ha i remember the last time i started a thread saying all albums should be no more than 50 mins, i got such a raft of shit

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

value for money has been to death here in various threads but let me just say that the person who thought that it was a clever idea to put crappy session cuts as extra tracks on reissues of 'classic' albs should have 'orrible 'orrible things done to them. and maybe even their family.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Jess I think I might've given you a raft of shit 'cause the figure should've been 45.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The picture in my head of a raft of shit... I don't feel particularly grateful for you placing it there, Jess.

Anyways, I quite like the extra sessioncuts etc things, as there's lots of fun things to be found there on jazz albums. And if I don't feel like it, I'll just turn the album off after the real songs are over.

But death to people who mix the bonus cuts INTO the regular tracklist. Waah!

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't quite decide what's worse...dropping tracks into the middle of an album or sticking them at the end and thereby possibly disrupting a perfectly good end-of-album flow.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

To me the ending thing is kinder, as at least then you can quickly hop up and turn it off. Preferable would be maybe a separate track of one minute silence between the album and the bonus tracks, so it doesn't turn into something like Repertoire's issue of "SF Sorrow", where the final song ends.... and some rockyrockerson track suddenly starts whomping like that "Chicken Tonight" guy.

Of course, there's always the possibility of just programming in the tracks you want, but who on earth actually does that?

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, CD players have program functions? I forgot.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

No no no; it's like "here's some coke but a third of it is actually ice and the coke is cold enough on it's own already".

Hereafter known as The Supersize Theory.

"Would you like an extra 25 minutes of filler with that Blue Note reissue, sir?"

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Once at the store where I used to work I was playing Tago Mago and a customer got really psyched on it. I showed him what it was, and when he saw that it was only seven tracks long, he said he figured it wasn't worth the price. He was pretty adamant about this, so I didn't tell him that two of the tracks were over 16 minutes long each.

Which might not be a selling point if most people think it's just fizzy water. I've said it before, though: those are some of my favorite moments on that album.

>>

Anyway, maybe instead of adding bonus tracks as a way of getting customers to think of it as value for the money record labels could, I dunno, charge less money for the CD without putting the bonus tracks on there? (I know, what a radical idea.)

die9o (dhadis), Monday, 12 May 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope people are dogging on 'Aumgn' & 'Peking O' and not 'Halleluwah' which is almost longer than the sum of both.

ss, Monday, 12 May 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

uh ss i think om and halleluja are both side-length, around 18 minutes.

die9, they do. you can find all sorts of $6-$10 cds - cut-outs, special priced 70s bands' greatest hits, used cds, calling a 30-45 minute album an ep and pricing it down, etc.

mig, Monday, 12 May 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

start with future days. end of story.

JOOLS, Monday, 12 May 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

albums should all be less than 36 minutes, so i can fit 2 on a CDR

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, but 'Halleluwah' is around 20 minutes.

ss, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't remember starting this at all.

RONGEST SHIT EVER.

ian, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

Is true, there's nothing wrong with any of Tago Mago, and people who won't buy albums with less than 20 songs on don't deserve to hear it anyway.

contenderizer, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

I know, right?, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

The >>> thing would work better with less hyperbole. Both great albums.

RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 29 August 2008 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

soundtracks is just slightly better than monster movie and both are great records, just not as ambitious/detailed as their later work.

ian, Friday, 29 August 2008 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

tago mago>monster movie>Soundtracks>Delay>Ege Bamyasi>Future Days(I think, I don't know this one so well) I don't know the others well enough to comment

Thanks (indirectly) to something Sick Mouthy posted last week (i forget exactly what), i blew £17 on the original Spoon-issue vinyl of Ege Bamyasi yesterday, having only heard one song on it once.

Did they see me coming? Either way, the sleeve's totally going up on my wall...

CharlieNo4, Monday, 1 September 2008 13:09 (seventeen years ago)

I miss the presence of Nick Southall and all the usual stylus staff over here.

seven months pass...

I'm still here!

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 20 April 2009 06:59 (sixteen years ago)

hello

۞_۞ (ciderpress), Monday, 20 April 2009 07:04 (sixteen years ago)

They're both great. Ege offers compressed Kraut-funk thrills, while Tago is an inspired sprawl. So, yeah Ege is a better starting point, but I can't help but feel I want the tracks to be longer. The grooves on Vitamin C and Spoon are so hot, I want them to go on forever. Perhaps one day they'll put out Mile Davis style box sets with the full unedited jams. Or was Ege a conscious attempt to be more concise, meaning that no such thing exists?
Tago edges it though. The first half is pretty much the greatest thing ever. Utterly transcendent. Aumgn is great, especially in remastered form. I really don't know why people object to it so much: there's loads going on, it's a sonic delight!
I once flew over Greenland while listening to Future Days. Damn, that was nice.

Stew, Monday, 20 April 2009 08:33 (sixteen years ago)

Miles even. :?
