Tricky: Vulnerable???

Everyboooody - anyone heard that new Tricky album that's out on Monday? If so, what's the verdict?

I've heard it, and I must say that I find it strangely unmoving. It's all kinda nice (except for the occasional rap metal guitar) and well crafted, but, like Massive Attack's latest, it just doesn't get to me. Maybe it's because Tricky's well known mumble is beginning to make him sound like a one trick pony. The tracks are unoriginal, too, to put it mildly.

Agree? No??? What!!?????

STRANGELY unmoving? Tricky? Since Martina's been gone (esp. "She Makes Me Wanna Die"), I think that's been a given. Shit, Ed Kowalcyzk was the better part of the collaboration he did with Tricky, despite saying "let me step up to the mic" and being Ed Kowalcyzk. That's just sad.

I actually like it a lot more than I expected to. I love Maxinquaye to death, find the next two spotty but worthwhile, the rest lose me more and more each time out, but this, on one play and mostly during the first half, sounds looser than he's been in a while, probably since ever. A lot of interesting, cool things happening in the production--tiny samples peeking out from the main groove. The new singer is virtually a Martine clone, but that's a good thing, since no one else sings his music better.

My Tricky love extends through the entirety of Pre-Millennium Tension, but it's been a pretty standard decline curve since.

Has anyone seen the Tricky documentary about his upbringing in Bristol? it's on the DVD collection.... mortifying. What a great advert for Bristol.

Not.
