Use this thread to point out all the annoying things that Chart Pop musicians do nowadays that must be purged for the good of humanity

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 12 May 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Vocoders and that thing where they go "maaaaaaay" instead of "me".

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 12 May 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

pitch correction must go.
Cut and pasting the singing word by word must stop.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 12 May 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had enough of lame duets - Kid Rock pushed me over the edge. Basically any song with a female whining or simpering in the background is annoying.

And if a male singer never says "babygirl" again, I'd be so, so happy.

Catherine (Catherine), Monday, 12 May 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

howsabout BabyBabyBaby?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 12 May 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Waitasec...thats more of an R&B thang, aint it?
Should I have started another thread specifically for R&B?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 12 May 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Pop and R&B - not so distinct, here at least.

Catherine (Catherine), Monday, 12 May 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Puff Daddy must be stamped out.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 12 May 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

no more hot chicks.
I'm so sicking of seeing hot chicks in revealing clothing doing naughty dance numbers whenever I turn on the tv. It's revolting.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 12 May 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"musical"

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 12 May 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Saying "bitch" as if you're breaking the final taboo in our society.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 12 May 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Please let guitars sound like guitars. Thanks.

hstencil, Monday, 12 May 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Pronunciation of 'better' as 'bettohoohwoh'. Though to my knowledge it's only Liberty X that do that.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 12 May 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ROSS ROBINSON

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 May 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

no more hot chicks.
Neither CustosCorp Industries, Ltd nor any of its subsidiaries endorse the opinions of Horace Mann. CustosCorp has always been a "hot chick friendly" Megalocorp and we have no intention of changing this policy.
Because if we did, the terrorists will win.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 12 May 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

CHIMES!!

Poppy (poppy), Monday, 12 May 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Please let vocals sound like vocals. Thanks.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 12 May 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

vocoders are great!!!

H (Heruy), Monday, 12 May 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Claiming to be old-school punk when 1) you play watered-down pop and 2) your punk image is solely based on how you dress. No names please; we'd be here all night.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 12 May 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Please bring back Ted Templeman.

hstencil, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

unnecessary beat-boxing and other 'wacky'/'creative' breakdown ideas that ultimately ruin the song.

and yes it would help if the people singing sounded like humans (vocoders are good once in a while though)

lyrics that have been filtered through the vocabulary of a five-year-old to ensure maximum boringness

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

starting your song with the line "hey mr dj".

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean to say, it was okay when zhane did it, but yee gods!

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

starting your song with the line "hey mr dj".
What about TMBG's "Hey Mr DJ, I Thought You Said We Had A Deal"

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

what does TMBG stand for?

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Missy doesn't say "Mr" so the rule is OK

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

TMBG = There Must Be Giants, fool.

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

what does TMBG stand for?

They Might Be Giants

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the day that They Might Be Giants are chart pop is the day I spack-fill my ears for all eternity

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

They're definitely as pop as a jingle writer. They don't qualify as metal, rap or R&B.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

so do the Apples in Stereo but that doesn't make them chart pop

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

They make pop and every once in a blue moon it gets a chart. Granted, its the Gavin Radio Airplay chart...but its still a chart.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

fashion stylists

funny funny stuff everyone has them and everyone wears the same uniform

die die die die

dickweed, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Top 10 chart musicians releasing singles that have a cast-off verse from a mildly respectable rapper shoehorned into the last minute of the song, despite the fact it bears no resemblance to the rest of it, and actually makes you look about as "street" as, say, Little Lord Faultenroy.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 07:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Basing the song on samples of other songs. Didn't Plunderphonics pretty much take that to its extent already?

Keyboards with a guitarpatch (not as prominent as it was a couple of years ago, thankfully, see Britney Spears)

Opening the song with a slightly distorted spoken word part (first to come to mind = Avril Lavigne going "Uh hu.. life's like this.. ahh ha.. that's just the way it is")

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 07:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Basing the song on samples of other songs. Didn't Plunderphonics pretty much take that to its extent already?
haha!

that does remind me that i dont like the lyrics "that's (just) the way it is" (i'm thinking specifically of an australian country song out at the moment but there are lots more. i did like 'it's like that' by run dmc vs jason nevins tho. i guess it depends on whether i agree that 'it' actually is 'like that')

minna (minna), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

haha oops sorry i forgot what the actual question was

minna (minna), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Basing the song on samples of other songs. Didn't Plunderphonics pretty much take that to its extent already?

Unfortunately Plunderphonics is one-listen drywank which elicits maybe half-an-hour's artistic contemplation and half-a-second's ear pleasure. MP3s were the worst thing that could have happened to John Oswald.

Lots of what's been mentioned here is good, obviously. (Guest verses! Guitar patches! Vocoders!) BUT chart pop is far from perfect and the two things that bug me are:

- the death of the lead vocalist/backing vocalist arrangement. Everybody taking a turn means that the 'story' of the song, its potential empathy-application to a single person (from singer to listener) is ruined. The worst example is Westlife and Mariah - "Against All Odds", where a song that is about a man alone is diluted by being split five-ways AND a song that is about being dumped is sung as a DUET!!

- acoustic guitars (or electrified acoustic guitars or whatever those things are) - strum strum strum indicating 'proper song'. As used by muppets who are stupid enough to write their own (bad) material - A1, Sneddon etc.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Death to the Spanish Guitar!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

mentioning the name of your record label over and over again, esp. if you're a rapper. yes, we know - it's rocafella. i'm not deaf i'm not senile - just say it once. no, wait...don't say it at all. why not come up with some clever wordplay where you would have mentioned who you record for?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Annoying spoken passages about "Refugee Camp Allstars".

Oh, wait, this just means that Wyclef Jean should be kept away from the producer's seat. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

and actually makes you look about as "street" as, say, Little Lord Faultenroy.
Yo, yo, yo...Little Lord Faultenroy's Posse to thread...
to start bustin' some muthafuckin domes...

Who let that doll into Puffy's dressing room?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

oh jesus - obvious ryhming lyrics, where you can predict the next line, eg. "i wanna be your lady, wont you be my baby, you drive me crazy". still done to death!

jesus_was_a_gogo_dancer (ujaku), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

groups with DJ's who do not add anything relative to the band.

wearing far to much lipstick in your videos. . . especially the guys!

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico Tico is right - vocoders, guest rappers and PARTICULARLY guitar patches are all brilliant.

I think the split five-ways thing is a bit of a post-Spice Girls tendency - the idea that everyone needs to contribute a certain amount to each song doesn't seem to have been as strong before that. Thinking back to Take That and East 17, it was obvious which singers carried the main load and which were there as back up. In contrast Westlife almost seem like a hive mind, and I reckon the members' essential interchangability is one of their weak points.

I tend to like it when vocal groups work out who does what well and stick to it. Blue are a good example in that their first three singles were more notable for the surprisingly clever progression and alternation of solo parts than for, say, production... although their recent material has been pretty sucky. Mis-Teeq as well, obv. (Does Su-Elise do *anything* (apart from rap like a male robot)? She's even less present than Michelle in Destiny's Child).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

  • To all fresh-faced pop stars: please don't try to prove how good your voice is by improvising a Mariah-style "Hmmmhmhmhm Mmmmmmaaaaaahhh, woooaahhh babayyyy, aah-ah-aahhh yeeeaahhh, wwoooo-o-o-o-oah, etc., etc." style bit all over the start of the song, just LET THE SONG START BY ITSELF AND START SINGING WHEN THE ACTUAL FLIPPING LYRICS FOR VERSE ONE STARTS!!!!
  • To UK mainstream BritPop bands- if you really have to do a ballad, ON NO ACCOUNT USE A HAMMOND ORGAN!!!!!
  • To all bands: If Tom Jones says he likes your stuff, he's planning another duets album- time to change your style.
  • To all pop boy/girl bands: it doesn't matter how good your songs is, you are NOT THE SOUND OF THE UNDERGROUND!!!!
Harumphh!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, lazyass... stick a bridge in one of those songs, if you know what one is.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Martha Wash, Loletta Holloway, Barry White or anything even remotely remiscent of one of those three.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

you've gone too far this time El Hongro

four years pass...

The word "baby" in rnb. And the words "little girl" in Futuresex/Lovesounds.

Vocoders and that thing where they go "maaaaaaay" instead of "me"

Are you speaking ill of "Freak Like Me"? THE GALL

How about singing "stop" and then pausing the music for a second or two? That's been done a bit too often.

musically, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

Everything in this thread should be compulsory.

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

Tonality. I mean come on, give it a rest already.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

is anyone still doing that thing the backstreet boys did near the end of "i want it that way" where the music ramps up a notch and all of them just start yowling away with their different crescendo-bits and it's reminiscent of the part in star wars where C3PO thinks everyone in the trash compactor is dying when really they're celebrating? well?

Kim, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

Little snippets of vocals run through that filter that makes it sound like you're talking on the phone. This would be fine I think for parts of the song where they're specifically supposed to be talking on the phone. Otherwise, incredibly overused and dumb.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

O that's a good one. How about this - that thing that Cher started on 'Believe', where they run the vocals through a synthesizer or whatever the fuck and insert two ugly synthy little notes into a syllable. Enough.

humansuit, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

Rap parts in 90s dance songs.
