Strangely, while I believe Rod Stewart is a better singer than Steve Marriott, I don't own a single Faces lp (though I have a couple of Rod's solo albums and obv Every Picture Tells A Story is a k-classic). Yet I have five Humble Pie albums. I don't even really like Humble Pie that much. I guess their records were always cheaper and easier to find here in the States. I guess I sort of like both singers equally. I love the way on something like Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, Marriott could easily flit from sweetly humble songs like "Afterglow" to the cockney send-up of "Lazy Sunday" to soulful strutting on "Rollin' Over". And of course Robert Plant completely ripped him off.

Search: "Tell Everyone," "Richmond," "Love Lives Here." Also search various Ronnie Lane & Slim Chance records, esp, "Anymore for Anymore"

Beat that.

Plus it was past-peak 'pie. "Thunderbox." Ha!

A question which is u&k. Whatever happened to Martin Quittenton as there's very little on the net to show what happened to him after working with Rod?

If Rod decided to sing exclusively for the Faces then we would be talking about Faces records like we talk about the Stones. As it is, they produced some incredible rock tunes but the records are a little spotty. I believe the Faces were suspicious that Rod saved his best stuff for his solo records.

What a monster rhythm section Ridley and Shirley were!! Easily one of my top five hard rock rhythm sections of the 70s. For a few shining albums, these guys were right below Jones/Bonham and Butler/War and precious few others...

Rod Stewart has confirmed his former band The Faces are back together for a reunion.

It was claimed at the start of the week that the remaining members of the group - Ronnie Wood, Ian MCLagan, Kenney Jones and Rod - were to reform for a 2009 tour. It's thought Stewart's bassist will stand in for late bass player Ronnie Lane.

"Yes, absolutely," Rod replied when asked if the reunion rumours were true. "We have our first rehearsal on Monday. It will be next summer and I am looking forward to it. It'll be great."

"Ronnie Wood is up for it. I think he feels great. He is full of energy and very excited. We try not to mix our family problems with work. I'll see him Monday."

I`m an original fan of all the line ups since the Small Faces had a residency at the Cavern in the Town in 65, and a real nerd completist. I was lucky enough to see Faces and Humble Pie on the same bill in 72 and Marriott showed Rodders how it was done in no uncertain terms!!
The beaky one lost it for me after Atlantic Crossing and if he`s bringing that "Great American Songbook" malarky to the table I`ll pass thanks....

both takes of "Maybe I'm Amazed" on the Five Guys box set are, well, amazing. And the live tracks on this set crush. And "Jealous Guy"! Rod may have taken his best originals to his solo albums, but this band was so good that even as a covers band they're worth lots of time.

like e.g. their cover of Free's "The Stealer", with great piano playing (of course)...just sounds like a blast to be there

They were as celebrated for rock'n'roll excess as for their influential music, and counted among their members two of the most notorious bad boys of their era. But while fans of the Faces will welcome news that the band is to reform, they may be left scratching their heads at its new lead singer, former Simply Red frontman and silky-voiced ladies' man Mick Hucknall.

Speaking to the Guardian, Ronnie Wood, who went on to join the Rolling Stones, insisted that Hucknall was rock'n'roll enough to step into Rod Stewart's tartan stack heels. "His band aren't but he is. Mick's a big Faces fan and it comes out when he sings, it's a kind of relief for him because he can let loose. Mick's range is like Rod's vocal range was in the seventies."

The three original members – Wood, Kenney Jones on drums and Ian McLagan on keyboard – will be joined by Hucknall and former Sex Pistol bassist Glen Matlock for a gig at this summer's inaugural Vintage at Goodwood festival. They then hope to tour next January.

The Faces are an important and some think undervalued piece in the complicated alcohol-sodden rock jigsaw of the 1960s and 1970s, formed by three evacuees from the Small Faces and Wood and Stewart from The Jeff Beck Group. With hits like Stay With Me, I'd Rather Go Blind and Had Me a Real Good Time they were one of the most successful bands of the early 1970s and particularly successful live where, with their brand of boozy, good-time camaraderie, they bonded with the predominantly male audiences.

The band have been rehearsing with Hucknall, and, said Wood, "it sounded so good we thought we've got to take it on the road. It was sounding fresher, if anything, and more focused."

That might have something to do with the bandmembers not being up to their eyes in drugs and drink. Wood, who these days declares himself "clean and serene", admitted: "It makes a big difference, yes, to actually know what you're playing."

Jones said one secret of the Faces was that they all acted as themselves. "We played it like it was and people either liked it or they didn't. The audience was on stage and we were with the audience, it was like a big party and it will be again."

The band members still hope that Stewart might one day be persuaded to join them. However, "he's touring and promoting and it's impossible to get any sense from his management," said Wood.

Vintage at Goodwood (13-15 August) is the brainchild of designer Wayne Hemingway and is meant to be something new on the summer schedule - a sort of festival for people who feel too old at Glastonbury or who can't face being camped out in a muddy field. That's reflected in the line-up. As well as Faces there will be Buzzcocks, The Noisettes and Heaven 17. It is also meant to be a celebration of "British cool" from the 1940s to 1980s and there will also be a carefully curated schedule of events combining art, design and fashion.

I love it all! Small Faces above all, but definitely Faces, Rod Stewart solo (1969-1973), Stewart and Wood's work with Jeff Beck, that single Rod did with Python Lee Jackon ('In A Broken Dream')... I enjoy some Humble Pie (although not all), but Rod solo from 1975 onwards is not to my taste.

Yeah, or in some case it looks like alternates of stuff that is. Also some of the material on the singles disc debuted on CD and was exclusive to the 5 Guys box.

This is the best scan I could find online. It's 3' by 4' and has boobs, butts, pills, thrills and bellyaches.

What does everyone think of Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance stuff? The s/t seemed good, though been a long time since I heard it, same for One For The Road; album with Townshend was cool overall, but more PT songs than Lane's, far as I recall.

I have this Ronnie CD anthology that his estate had been selling online in the mid '00s to launch some sort of back catalog reissue series that didn't quite happen. It's pretty hard to find now, but it's a solid and through collection. His solo stuff (aside from Rough Mix) is really hard to find--looks like everything is OOP these days, and only Anymore For Anymore is on Spotify.

...and Real Gone put out a remastered Mahoney's Last Stand on CD & Vinyl last year.

The hardback set includes a 48-page booklet with new commentary from surviving band members and archival quotes from Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan, and legendary BBC broadcaster John Peel. Lavishly illustrated with many previously unseen photos, the booklet details every Faces BBC session, concert, and broadcast. BBC broadcaster Gary Crowley wrote the detailed liner notes, which include a new interview with Jeff Griffin, who produced all of the Faces’ BBC concert appearances.

Once thought lost, many of the band’s BBC recordings were recovered from the Faces’ own archives and private collections. (Notably, only one BBC session of three songs remains missing.) Rarities include a stereo mix of the May 13, 1971, Paris Cinema concert, which was only broadcast in mono, and a February 1973 show that was never aired due to the BBC’s concerns over the band’s on-stage banter with the rowdy audience.
