pa watching old footage of gigs with bill wyman, john paul jones - well they didn't rock out much - could you name a few bands where one member seems to do nowt special + is hideously bland in comparison to the others, but reaps the benefits of being in that band ( good for them ). are they essential to that band - would they have been as famous/successful with someone else

This phenomenon is even funnier when it's a duo (i.e. John Oates)

tarden, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

or wham

Wasn't one of Depeche Mode just the band's accountant for a while? He'd be onstage pretending to play but with their touring accounts hidden from view on his synth stand

Actually, I WISH there were more bands with just ONE boring member - instead of three or four dullards w/ star vocalist, as is so often the case these days

tarden, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It would have been cool if Kiss' drummer dressed in a suit.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rolling Stones already did that one with Charlie Watts.

A-level cliche: 'Charlie Watts is the coolest member of the Stones'.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

john entwistle is my favorite member of the who.

ethan, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

John Paul Jones was like the freakin shy cousin or something but hes the most interesting.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oooh, how could anyone forget the lovely Craig from Bros??, or was he actually called 'The Other One', as in Matt, Luke & the Other One?

Bill E, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

in the same vein as hall & oates: phife when compared to q-tip.

aulophobia, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fuck you, phife is my favorite tribe member.

ethan, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd say the sorrily bland Dave Greenfield in the Stranglers, but he is integral to their sound. Otherwise, I'll go with Cliff the bassist in Ac/Dc, the gent who doesn't sing in the Pet Shop Boys and every single member of the Cars.

Re: Depeche -- Andy Fletcher is Martin Gore's childhood friend and as a result is always with him and has always been in the band -- and indeed contributes nothing. To be fair: 1) he's always acknowledged it -- see interview snippet in 101, 2) he was indeed a pretty damn good manager for the group in said internal role, he had as good an interest as anyone in not being ripped off if not more so. He's since relinquished the managerial role and generally I gather is the built-in BS detector of the group -- ie, Martin tests songs and arrangements on him to see if they'll work for a general audience. And why not? His antic non-playing playing style on stage is pretty nutty, though.

Why yes I'm a fan. Can't wait to see the show -- two days after my vacation! Perfect timing! Then Tool the day after that and then Radiohead the following week and then etc. etc.

i hear tori amos is covering 'enjoy the silence' on her new album and fucking with the lyrics. fuck tori amos for trying to ruin the greatest song of all time. everyone, join me, FUCK TORI AMOS! it's fun.

ethan, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not a good idea, she might try and write a song about you

JC, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mmm..not only is Tori Amos covering Depech Mode, but The Stranglers, Eminem, Lloyd Cole and The Velvet Underground as well. Hmm..should be interesting...

JC, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You surprise me every time, Ethan, wouldn't have picked you to pick that song as your all-time fave -- and a fucking great and fantastic song it is. :-) I'm actually very interested to hear what she does with it -- but nothing can top the original, the various live versions, the demo, the initial 12" mix, the further mixes on the single, the final overarching megamix, the...

Jason from Take That. There were of course the Good Three: Gary, Mark and Robbie. Then they threw in Howard for the bad boy image. For some reason they also threw in little Jason Orange. He was old, he looked bad, never sang the main part to a TT song. The only reason they kept him was because he was the choreographer.

i thought her cover of bonnie and clyde '97 was a really good idea until i learned she was changing the lyrics to be from the woman's perspective. what the fuck? 1) it would have been much better social commentary to cover it unchanged and not do a stupid preachy gimmick 2) this smacks of marshall's mom 'rapping' her response to his 'abuse' a while back (a song that made all the news programs yet somehow neglected to climb the pop charts). i heard part of it on a special eminem-centered cash-in (uh, i mean, episode) of sally jesse raphael -- the funniest thing is that she was just talking over a beat. 'i'm sorry you disrespected me like that, marshall. i hope things can turn out okay'. like, what the fuck, she thinks she's the supa-dope mc now? anyway she sued his ass for like, hella bucks so her whining on record doesn't really tug at my heartstrings.

ethan, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ned: 'enjoy the silence' is not actually my all-time fave, it's just the greatest song ever. i have sadly never heard any versions aside from the album cut, although a live one sounds good. why the hell was there a live version of songs of faith and devotion and not violator? 'lets cover our most unpopular (and recent) album live in concert and sell it! fuck that chart-topping shit from three years ago.' depeche mode can be pretty fucking stupid sometimes.

ethan, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That whole thing was a strange scam, agreed. Happily a motherfucking goddamn amazing version of "Enjoy the Silence" appeared as a B-side around that time from the tour. AAAAH. Bliss.

Heavy Cars dis!

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Main Entry: dis Pronunciation: 'dis Function: transitive verb Inflected Form(s): dissed; dis·sing Etymology: perhaps short for disrespect Date: 1986 1 slang : to treat with disrespect or contempt : INSULT 2 slang : to find fault with : CRITICIZE

haha ! Dis has made it into the dictionary!

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Guigsy from Oasis. Blandest of the bland.

Catty, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Er, perhaps in the way that some people find horrific accidents interesting. I don't care if people think I'm a musical fascist, that woman should not be a allowed to cover other peoples' songs. She's bad enough when she's wibbling on about herself -- but at least she can be ignored; with this project I fear she will get a lot of publicity (which was probably the point) and I won't be able to avoid hearing the results. I really don't want to associate her with songs I actually like, and have them ruined for me.

And I totally agree with ethan about Bonny and Clyde. It sounds hella stupid, like something an afterschool special would advocate.

Nicole, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*insert bad joke: "Fuck Tori Amos? No thanks." here*

Dan Perry, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
