TS: Taylor Hawkins or Dave Grohl

Taylor Hawkins was the drummer for Alanis Moriset and now he's drumming for the Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl was the drummer for Mission Imposible, Dain Bramige, Scream, and Nirvana.

I think Dave is a better drummer, of course. What do you think? Tell me the good and bad things about them.

how much has TH actually played on the last 2 Foos albums? I was never really clear on whether Dave ever loosened his reigns on the drums on those records, although he seems to have a lot of respect for Taylor as a drummer...either way I like the drumming on their recent stuff a lot (great use (not overuse) of fills), even if i don't care for the songs much.

I like Dave a whole lot more. His drumming makes me want to jump around and headbang and mosh, even when I'm just lying down listening to my headphones and reading a book.

I saw a Foo show on tv once and Taylor sounded great, and I remember seeing him on tv with Alanis once and being impressed. Dave's got the signature style though, he's so heavy and his fills are really melodic.

British bands could use more drummers like Dave Grohl!

No, it's not the quality of the drummers or anything. It's in the nature of the thread itself.

For a start, I think Taylor Hawkins was only Alanis' touring drummer, so don't bother listening for any technical proficiency on her albums (in fact, do yourself a considerable favor and avoid her recorded output altogether). Secondly, Grohl may have played in Dain Bramge and Mission Impossible, but good luck finding any actual recorded evidence of same (I'm not alleging that he didn't play for those bands, but that you'll be truly hard pressed to track'em down).

There exists a Dain Bramage album, _I Scream Not Coming Down_. Heard it once a long time ago and it didn't make much of an impression; Reuben Radding, who was D.B.'s leader, has more recently been doing some really interesting stuff as a jazz musician (standup bass).

Dave is a terrific musician, I think (and you left out his one-man band Late, by whom I've only ever heard a couple of songs but they were pretty good in a proto-Foo Fighters way). I remember really liking what he did on the Backbeat soundtrack: totally genre- and era-appropriate but also distinctive and energetic.

Taylor plays hard (and very loudly) and is fun to be around (I spent a couple of days w/ the Foos ages and ages ago); he absolutely gets the job done, but I like Dave's drumming much better.

I don't think Taylor was actually on any of Alanis' albums, but I did see him in one of her music videos. I have only seen one of her videos though.

DAVE RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
