We're playing fast and loose with the toast concept in my opinion. Sooner or later someone's going to mention Bread or DJ Krust.

smudge - 'tea, toast and turmoil'
you am i - 'makin' toast'

angelo (angelo), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I am so glad this thread was about Streetband. "Toast" is one of the greatest songs ever written, not least because of the "boo boo boo boo boo boo boo" vocal solo bit. Also, the "brown bread, white bread, all sorts of wholemeal bread..." rap is fo-shizzle.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't Pink Floyd's "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" mention toast in it somewhere?

The Stranglers "Golden Brown"

Flaming lips - she don't use jelly

spreading it with vaseline, etc...

Robin Goad (rgoad), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I third the recommendation of "Toast" by the Streetband. There's something gloriously humble about it.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I know it's another stretch, but there's a new DC band called French Toast with James Canty (Nation of Ulysses, Ted Leo) and Jerry Busher (Fugazi, All Scars). Their "Bugman" E.P. has some cool moments. Oh, and there's an At the Drive In song called "For Now We Toast."

Ben Boyer, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

ian dury's wake up and make love to me features the couplet-
i'll get some tea and toast/
its me who needs it most.

big d (big d), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I am open-mouthed with astonishment at the fact that no-one has mentioned Life by Des'ree, especially when it recently featured in the Worst Lyrics Ever thread...

Pest 5000 "Toast" (I think that is the title). Great song.

j breitling (BlastsofStatic), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a song by Poi Dog Pondering that that mentions toast and jelly.

Brandon Gentry (Brandon Gentry), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Newbeats, "Bread and Butter", covered by Devo, mentions liking toast and jam, although the song is really about sex, not toast.

Curt (cgould), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Happy Flowers - "Toastfire"

Which tells the story of a child who butters his bread before toasting it.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Bragg -- "I Don't Need This Pressure, Ron"

Oh, pity the pressures at the top,
The tantrums and the tears
And the sound of platinum cash tills
Ringing in their ears
Money maketh man a Tory
Don't fire that assumption at me
I like toast as much as anyone
But not for breakfast, dinner, and tea

I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast
but I like hot butter on my breakfast toast

I'm willing to bet that every mc that has used the word "boast" has followed it up with "toast" in 9 out of 10 rap tunes.

henry s, Monday, 5 September 2022 22:22 (three years ago)

I don't mean to brag I don't mean to boast
But I'm intercontinental when I eat French toast
