British pop right now

It's probably just a blip (as RRRRrrrOCK is the nu god, whatever), but blimey it's been nice recently in popworld. I've been enduring (what I think are) the bland hook-scarce r&b of Justin Timbo and other chart fodder, only to find myself REALLY loving current chart pop. The Girls Aloud single obv, but I heard the S Club 8 single and thort it was like a compilation of all the best sounds ever in pop songs. Then there's the marvel that is Busted just cruising along in the background.

Oh and popworld the magazine is grebt. BUY IT NOW. Lovely litttle Simon and Miquitta, bless em.

the popworld.com message boards are funny. pity it's all FLASH nonsense.

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooray for popworld the magazine - Isabel loves it which is a sure sign of mag doom. It's the first music mag she's ever liked I think.

As for the actual pop, no idea mate - I'm really out of touch at the moment, barely listen to the radio and the MP3 sites I used to download good new tunes from have evaporated or gone all new rock.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

there's always been at least 3 good pop songs in the charts

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't wait to hear S Club 8's new single.Love 'em.I love Lisa Scott Lee's fantastic 'Lately',Saffron Hill's ultracatchy 'My Love is Always There'& S Club's 'Love Ain't Gonna Wait for You' which should be HUGE.Pop rules!

Paul R (paul R), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the idea of renaming S Club Juniors as S Club 8, I've just not heard the song.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

tico you should hear the latest phil niblock instead ;-)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The UK pop scene needs to get out of the "Popstars"/"Idol" thinking and start looking for singer/songwriter talent again.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

b-but the Girls Aloud single is from the popstars stable and it's bloody marvellous. Also isn't the point of popstars/idol that they are finding the singers and hooking them up with the songwriters to do the job.

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

singer/songwriters bore me.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Where there is true musical talent, a talented singer is able to write good songs himself without the aid of outside songwriters.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes Alan, just like that nice Mr Sneddon.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

geir is talking absolute cobblers

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The world needs more great pop singer/songwriters like Paul McCartney to emerge once again.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

...after all this time I don't know why I bother but... does this statement mean that, to pick just one out of a multitude of names out of the ether, Frank Sinatra had no musical talent or that he could have written great songs if only he'd been allowed to? Either way, up to Geir's usual standard.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

that's not the first time someone has said that alan.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

There are two different eras. Before The Beatles and after The Beatles. After The Beatles, nothing is ever supposed to be the same again.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Please please please do not let a thread about grebt British pop be diverted into attempting to argue with a Norwegian lunatical.

Oh, too late then. As you were.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir, you are insane. Helter Skelter coming down etc etc

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

does this happen to all ILM threads these days? Not that I really want anything to actually happen here, i was just thinking aloud myself. Maybe another board, "I Love Music in a Kind of Non-presecriptive Way"

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

can ppl exercise some restraint and like, not ans him.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"I Wonder About Music Sometimes"

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

THAT'S IT!

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'd contribute.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I would look forward to it, if this is the Tico Torres.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

how about "I loved music"

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

hook-scarce r&b of Justin Timbo

Shurely shome mistake.

Where there is true musical talent, a talented singer is able to write good songs himself without the aid of outside songwriters.

Dusty Springfield, Billie Holiday, Yma Sumac, Gladys Knight, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Kylie Minogue, Tony Bennett, Donna Summer, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Martah Reeves.............all crap.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I just read the Girls Aloud review on the Popworld website and because it's a scroll-down flash thing, I momentarily thought that it had been reviewed by Sean Paul.

Nick H, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

...the marvel that is Busted

Dear God!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Saffron Hill's My Love Is Always There is great yeah, so unbelievably catchy, I wish the weather could match it over here. Tim Deluxe's other new single "Less Talk More Action" is pretty cool too, not sure when he's releasing that though.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, My Love Is Always Theeeeeeere is quickly becoming my favourite pop/house tune this year. This is going to be THE summer anthem, no doubt about it.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The Popworld message board registration page made me feel very old. Under date of birth, I had to select the "pre-1983" option (OK, I'm late 82 but still).

Nick H, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds like UK pop is as crap as US pop

g (graysonlane), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not keen on the new S Club 8 record, it's nowhere near as thrilling as "New Direction" which was unbridled aceness

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i have to agree, New Direction was great -- I still don't get all the love for Automatic High.

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

'New Direction'& 'One step Closer' are fantastic.Jewels & Stone are popgods!

Paul R (paul R), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Biscuit tin mice voiced Motown roxx u r all gay.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Out & proud!

Paul R (paul R), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm - thing is, you look at the current top 40 - vast majority of the British acts in there just ain't much cop. Big Brovaz, Cheeky Girls, Bhangra Knights, Busted, Kym Marsh, Gareth Gates and Triple 8 are all pish, and that's counting Ronan Keating as Irish.

However, most of what is being bigged up on this thread is indeed class. The Girls Aloud record in particular is damned exciting because Louis Walsh seems to have realised that there's a large gap in the market for new pop acts that do actually sound EXCITING as opposed to sounding like, ooh, Westlife. GA should almost certainly succeed where Hear'Say cocked up (incidentally, there's an entire rack of Hear'Say's second album going at £2 each in the Virgin Megastore in Croydon) because they do feel like they're actually trying to do something new instead of the formula Waterman and Lithgow tried of some 70's covers/slightly tarted-up versions of Take That's slower numbers, and presumably the public will take to that.

Except that Girls Aloud are #2 in the midweeks, behind R. Kelly.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

since when are the Cheeky Girls British? i thought they were asylum seekers < /dailymail>

yours, reassuringly unimpressed by Girls Aloud

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

abs from five's new single is great. main hook: "why don't you get your kit off?"
