I have the Girls Aloud album!

Yes I do! It's out on May 28th but I've done some pre-order thing which lets me d/l all the songs now and of course, I've sneakily leapt over the copyright protection and ripped it to mp3. It's on Soulseek in my shares in 'My Music / Girls Aloud' but you're NOT allowed to d/l it from me. Ok? ahem.

After one cursory listen it seems pretty fab. Couple of dreary ballads but they're far outweighed by the many chunky robot-disco stomps. And 'Love bomb' is bouncy Betty Boo brilliance. So, go pay £14 and get it and say what you think.

Ian SPACK (Affectian), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

There're plenty of nasty 4 second loops disguised as the new Girls Aloud songs so avoid them ones.

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Already have a promo of the album. Twice as good as the Electric Six album, and wise people will know exactly what I mean by that.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

2 x 0 = 0?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god please no more contrary nonsense.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I see where Marcello's coming from, and I'm interested because I want to like the Electric Six so this means I should actually really like this!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd prefer to hear about whether the album was good rather than why it is good for irking people.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"Sound Of The Underground" has FINALLY been released in NZ (& with barely any radio play) (we didn't have yr popstars show - a big factor, sadly) - so I guess I'll have to import the album if I want to see it at all . . . uh, so please keep talking about it.

Ess Kay (esskay), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(amen, ronan. seems like there's SO much "this beats the pants off your little tiny petty unimportant ungood [x] record, ha so there" snarkism recently. no diss to marcello, who i suspect was just trying to say 'this succeeds where that fails' but, yeah, less irk)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"No Good Advice" is great!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 15 May 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Grrr. I downloaded one of the looping mp3s last night. But as an appetite-whetter, more than successful I would say.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Thursday, 15 May 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't wait to hear this...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 15 May 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

No Good Advice is fantastic yeah, I really respect them for leaving "anaesthesise" in the chorus. It is so much better than that crap Sound of the Underground nonsense. Now can someone please work on their oompa loompa image.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

those two singles are pretty good, the guitarist is a lucky guy ;-)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 15 May 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh sweet, my friend came home last week from studying abroad in Ireland and she brought back Now 54 and "Sound of the Underground" made me all giddy and shit. Is this thing on Soulseek yet? And I didn't even know there was an Electric Six album. I assume it too has not been officially released yet.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 15 May 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Popbitch states that the guitarist (in the studio at least) is John from Spirtualized (and Spring Heel Jack?). Can anyone confirm this?

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Thursday, 15 May 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha, that's makes for a change.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Now can someone please work on their oompa loompa image.

I agree. They look awful. I'm surprised someone hasn't prioritised this (strange because a lot of care has been taken with the music).
One problem is that there's too many of them (this is where the Sugarbabes-type threesome works so well).

David (David), Thursday, 15 May 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i get the distinct impression Girls Aloud are more popular with twentysomething blokes than with tweenage girls...but then i don't go on any music forums dominated by tweenage girls admittedly

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 May 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Now can someone please work on their oompa loompa image.

No way! They look so sweet - shrinking the distance between the people buying the music (um, assuming that tweenagers actually do buy it, and it's not just us) and the stars themselves. Like, they don't necessarily look a whole lot more glamorous or remarkable than the girls singing along in their front rooms at home. Non-aspirational pop, C or D?

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 16 May 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

they look fine to me but then i am a twentysomething.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 16 May 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Burchill in the Grauniad last Saturday - "the most important group since the Sex Pistols." A great line, and not one with which I'm currently tempted to argue (I'm also going to nick it for the headline in my Uncut review). Well my copy says that it is indeed John Coxon on guitar, plus ex-KLF henchman Nick Coler on keyboards. Everything connects...

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 16 May 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

marcello- check yr email.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 16 May 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

erm.......right I like the song but now we're getting into uber ridiculous territory.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 May 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

wah!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 16 May 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

julio, i've emailed you back (and also nath). great news! :-)

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 16 May 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Is the John Coxon who guitars on this the same Coxon who has all the c-writer credits on Grrr! It's Betty Boo? (I'm assuming him and not erstwhile Other Famous Coxon)

Alex in Rotherham (alexfack), Friday, 16 May 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

**Burchill in the Grauniad last Saturday - "the most important group since the Sex Pistols."**

I luv them, BUT why are they 'important'?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 16 May 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Also isn't comparing importance almost 30 years later slightly off the wall?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 May 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"most fun band since the spice girls" might be more in proportion, but would sell fewer papers i suspect. don't you just hate having to say something you believe rather than something people will notice/talk about

Alan (Alan), Friday, 16 May 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

''something you believe'' abt girls aloud is boring. ''notice/talk abt'' is bettah!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 16 May 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

''something you believe'' abt girls aloud is boring

is that because there is really nothing?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 May 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure all of you people have heard this music. Were you listening?

the sniperfox (Cozen), Friday, 16 May 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

For "why they are REALLY important" see forthcoming attractions on Church of Me - don't have time/space to fit it in this week, but the appropriate article will be there week after next.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 16 May 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont see whats so ridiculuous or contrary about this thread ronan

gareth (gareth), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't calling the whole thread ridiculous or contrary.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

''is that because there is really nothing?''

beyond the fact that I like a couple of songs i've heard i don't really know (I'm prob not gonna buy the record to find out anyway).

(BTW i caught the video to their latest single last night and I have to say that that blonde girl's hair looks out of place with the others but apart from that their clothes/looks are fine to me but i don't have any standards anyway).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 17 May 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"in my heart I am a poet, don't know how to show it" - hahaha, poor old One True Voice.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I downloaded this LP last night. I'm saddened to say that it's a bit arse

j0e (j0e), Saturday, 17 May 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

From 'Sounds of the Underground' and the other
one, they just sound like a regular English pop
group with a more guitars and drums sound. Is
that the exciting part?

d k (d k), Saturday, 17 May 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The United Kingdom is probably at least twenty
years behind North America. Pop music-wise.
It's like 2003-20=1983. You've just invented
people talking over dance music. And you have
Madonna. And Girls Aloud is exciting.

dlk (d k), Saturday, 17 May 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

that's right mate

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 May 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

My thoughts on Girls Aloud now up on CoM, for those interested, together with thoughts on new D Warhols and the London Improv Orch...

Marcello Carlin, Sunday, 18 May 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
All I Need (All I Don't) is better than both the singles put together. Mostly because of that farty electro noise.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i downloaded 'Stop' and hated it - 'Mars Attack' was better, but everything they do seems to remind me of 'Addicted To Bass' but not as good. i think i will go back to 'none of my business' nonchalance about Gurls Alahd

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
Popdirt.com says Sound of the Underground will be released in the U,S. in July with "No Good Advice" as the lead single (probably released to radio in late May).

A new tracklistting adds the Freaky Friday song and the "Jump (For My Love)," and "Girls on Film" covers and drops some of the weaker tracks. (Unfortunately, it also omits "Girls Allowed" and "Love/Hate".)

U.S. tracklisting is being reported as:

1. No Good Advice
2. Jump
3. Life Got Cold
4. Sound of the Underground
5. Girls On Film
6. Some Kind of Miracle
7. White Lies
8. Mars Attack
9. All I Need (All I Don't)
10. Stop
11. Forever and a Night
12. You Freak Me Out

scott pl. (scott pl.), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

but that means it doesn't have that great double whammy of no good advice and sound of the underground at the start

chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, meet again scottpl.

Did i read wrong or has somebody got a leak of a new Girls Aloud album?

Toaster, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

For fuck's sake, any American that wants a copy of it will either download it or buy an import. Why the hell do U.S. labels release U.K. records about ten months too late?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Who cares about the album? I just like that one with the long dark hair and the (Scots?) accent. She is fecking sweet.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-but where have "Don't Want You Back" and "Everything You Ever Wanted" and "Boogie Down Love" and ESPECIALLY "Love Bomb" with its Betty Boo-alike rap gone?! Quite apart from the removal of "Girls Allowed" which was one of the highlights to begin with.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone interested in the UK version should just pick it up from CD Wow, which I believe has it for only 6.99 pds.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Normally I would hate 70min+ albums, but the case of GA they could actually put everything they've done on one disc just about and there would be no filler. I might make my own copy....

Lex, you know Betty Boo co-wrote "Love Bomb" right?

Also, I'm pretty sure the 2nd album hasn't been recorded yet.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I guessed, I knew she was involved with some of the tracks.

I actually have all of GA's output on one disc except "You Freak Me Out" which I haven't heard yet and it's one of the most magnificent things I own.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not at all sure about "You Freak Me Out"

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? I think that's the best song I've heard from then since SotG, it's the "whooo" bit that does it.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Freak is good, not great, but it stomps and shakes in all the right bits. Alex and I are busy making placards and organising petitions to get Love Bomb reinstated and released as the best single of ever/now.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Freak is crap, the remix of Some Kind of Miracle is a
fucking travesty and Forever And A Night should have been wiped from existance.

Love Bomb owns everyone - but it was on the Jump single, at least. As does the rather brilliant B-side On A Round.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 8 January 2004 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"You Freak Me Out" is good, but in a fairly standard GA way. It's not earth-shattering like "SOTU" or "NGA", and the guitar solo is a bit lame, but I think it more than satisfies our unquenchable GA thirst (that's a contradiction in terms I know) until the second album lands.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

tweenage girls certainly wdn't get into involved dsicussions of b-sides and sequencing! my ladyfriend purchased it for 6 quid, but it was v 1.0, so no dvd extras, or 'jump' boo-hoo.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The original version is the best one to have, because the remixed "Some Kind Of Miracle" is horrible AND you still get "Love Bomb".

I must be the only person in existence who loves "Forever And A Night" though, it's a hallmark of GA's greatness that even their token shite ballad is awesome - it's a natural successor to "2 Become 1"!

One of my little sister's mates, a tweenage girl if ever I saw one, picked up SOTU version 2 and immediately started complaining about the sequencing and lack of "Love Bomb".

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The extras are Quicktime, not DVD.

I like "Forever & A Night". No buggering about, 4 lines of verse and then straight into the huge chorus. In and out in just over 3 minutes is pretty slick. I would take it over "Life Got Cold" in the GA slowy stakes.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

They messed with "Some Kind of Miracle"????

And omitted "Boogie Down Love"????

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Tim, they certainly did. Do not listen to the re-recorded version, it may prove upsetting.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Boogie Down Love" is on the re-release. The songs dropped, as far as I can tell, were "Love Bomb", "Everything You Ever Wanted" and "Don't Want You Back", in favour of "Jump", "You Freak Me Out" and "Girls On Film".

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 9 January 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I've now heard "You Freak Me Out" and I agree with Nick... if they wanted to add extra tracks it beats me why they didn't just ADD them, is an 18-track album with no filler at all meant to be a bad thing?

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 9 January 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Because indie kidsexperts decided albums should be 35-50 minutes didn't they? (slight sarcasm)

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 10 January 2004 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

haha that never stopped Xtina!

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 10 January 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Most ordinary albums should be 35-50 minutes, but this is no ordinary album. This is a seminal work in Western culture!

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 10 January 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

that's so not an exaggeration, either! Cheryl Tweedy = ICONIC and Nicola Roberts = SCARY.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
'don't want you back' is really good isn't it?

when's the new album out?

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, Marcello really changed his mind about this lot!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

what's 'dont want you back'? is this the new single.
the fckng last one was ace.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

'don't want you back' is on the first album, i've only just realised how great it is though. and marcello's changed his mind back again i think, see his blog.

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I've probably changed my mind about Girls Aloud, as opposed to their music.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

...and what's THIS all about????
http://www.freakytrigger.co.uk/nylpm/2004_08_01_nylpm_archive.html#109221434585304939

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

ah wait, Google is my friend:

According to the reliable Popjustice site, Girls Aloud second single from their forthcoming new album will be titled 'Love Machine'. The single should be released during September with the album following during the same month or early October.

The album's titled is rumoured to be "Special Something".

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

What a boring album title. The Nearer The Bone, The Sweeter The Meat would have been far more striking.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that was... unexpected. What with this and the McFly single, expect ITV to be churning out 'Stray Cats Mania!' roundabout the middle of next year.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice song though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

What a boring album title. The Nearer The Bone, The Sweeter The Meat would have been far more striking.

What a fantastic title. Someone really needs to give Marcello a big wedge of money to set up a new ZTT.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

love machine can be downloaded from http://www.girlsaloudunited.com

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and the original version of the first album is currently about £4 in HMV.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I like Love Machine. This is presenting quite a crisis.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Hole in my shoe!

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

(that's just the first verse tho', the chorus reminds of some other song altogether but I can't think what - 's bugging me now)

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)
