i once listened to the Spinanes "Strand" whilst in the middle of a severe flu-induced fever, and somehow spent the whole time thinking it was the best album ever..

"Sing" by Blur. Anything by MBV or Spacemen 3. The sound of snot dripping down the back of your throat.

A few years back when I had my worst flu ever: after a marathon night of barfing and shits I woke up to find I was no longer able to stand up for more than three seconds at a stretch. So in a dehydrated delirium I crawled to the kitchen (fuck why is my hallway so LONG), found a bottle of water, crawled back, and drank the water while playing "Minutes To Midnight" by Midnight Oil on repeat all afternoon. Somehow this is now a fond memory, rather than the recollection of horror it should be. It's all about the mid-80s Oils, man!

I follow Jarvis Cocker's advice - I listen to Scott Walker whenever I've got the flu. Cosy yet nasty at the same time - a bit like what flue feels like, really.

I frequently play something by Tangerine Dream when I'm feeling like that.

Actually I never seem to play anything by Tangerine Dream UNLESS I'm feeling like that.

Most appropriate track would be 'TB Sheets' by Van Morrison, but it's unlikely to make you feel any better.

thirteen years pass...

Last night while dosed up on medicine and trying to get some sleep (and failing, because FFS...) - I thought I'd see if a little music would help. Thing is, I didn't know what on Earth to listen to... I needed something "lovely" sounding, possibly slow-to-mid paced, unobtrusive, bland enough to sit in the background without demanding too much attention. Basically, an album that it is impossible not to be able to tune out from.

Then I realised... of course! Hats by The Blue Nile! So, I cued it up and turned the lights out and... the drum machine opening 'Over The Hillside' sounded magnificent and very well-recorded, and in this context the album was perfect. I slept really well and woke up as refreshed as I could hope for. I'm delighted to have finally found a use for this record.

I did the same with Mark Hollis' solo album the other night. Sometimes, only stately, monkish contemplation will do.
