unreleased East Village!

just let me catch my breath for a sec...

there is only one phrase that excites me as much as "unreleased MBV" and that's "unreleased East Village" and fuck me it's actually true...

the East Village website indicates that a series of 3 7" singles are going to be released with (old) new stuff on the b-sides. i am literally wetting my pants with delight.

if you haven't heard East Village you're missing out on some of the best British janglepop ever released.

why on 7 inchers? on cd would be much nicer.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

don't know, cd would be nice but beggars can't be choosers and all that.. now i just have to work out how to order it.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i've actually only ever heard one east village song and it was the one of the first leamington spa comp when they were still episode 4. i should probably get around to some of it.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"Drop Out" is a fantastic album. Heaps better than anything Birdie have done so far.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

better than 'lift up the sun'?

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

is that on Reverb Deluxe? i don't think i've heard that one

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw East Village a couple of times, I guess in '87 but maybe in '88. I liked them, but thought thieir debt to early Hurrah! was a bit pronounced. Of course, if you're going to have a debt to someone, those early Hurrah! records are good choice of creditor.

Look forward to these singles though.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah on 'reverb deluxe' which is a lovely record if you don't have the singles. got the jane weaver cd , it's like there are two demarnia lloyds now, wonderful!

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 16 May 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't there supposed to be a compilation of some of their unreleased stuff coming out on Summershine? I know that the owner of that label moved to the US, but I never heard anything else. It must be stuff from that.

svend, Friday, 16 May 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say that's likely. Summershine pretty much fizzled out completely during the mid-90s, Jason Reynolds seems to write for the NME occasionally now but I don't know if he's working for any other label now..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 16 May 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

my friend lauren tried to sell me on summershine making me a tape of the earthmen and the glory box and other stuff, i don't remember if it was any good though.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 16 May 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

summershine released some classic singles although not all of them have aged well..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 16 May 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Best live band ever. How do we get these records?

harveyw (harveyw), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

trying to work that out myself. if i successfully get hold of one i'll pass on the details here

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 16 May 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Did you have any luck with this, esoj? I emailed the label back when this thread started, & have only just received a (somewhat non-commital) response from the website, but I managed to purloin a copy of the 45 (at least) from Martin East Village during the week anyway. The unreleased tune is a pleasant enough instrumental; a little disappointing, but after their extraordinary live shows, the records usually were.

harveyw (harveyw), Friday, 4 July 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

it was incredibly difficult communicating with the label. i even had a japanese-speaking friend try and work out how to get old of one and the label was very non-committal. maybe they're not supposed to be selling copies overseas? i don't know..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 5 July 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
So 'Drop Out' has been reissued on 2CD by Excellent Records w/all of 'Hot Rod Hotel' and more besides on disc two. They've also released a solo album, 'Quiet Storm', by John Wood of EV. Anyone been able to pick these up? I've had no luck contacting the label direct...

Does anyone have the Episode Four 12"? And whatever DID happen to Jason Reynolds @ Summershine? I knew him way back when...

jon dale (jon dale), Friday, 9 June 2006 08:40 (nineteen years ago)

i don't know, but i do know he was selling summershine back catalogue on ebay not long ago.

i'd love that E4 12" but i don't have that sort of $$$

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

there were/are copies of the 2cd drop out on gemm a couple of weeks ago, probably worth having a look there.

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

i'm wondering if anyone's managed to source the tracks from E4 12" (on cd-r or tape or whatever) in some nuzzling-up-to-indie-collector scenario. not my kind of pain, but maybe someone else was hot to trot. if i do find 'em, i'll pass them on to ya.

have you picked up the 2cd drop out yourself, esoj?

jon dale (jon dale), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

not yet but i will soon. i imagine it will be a nice set - i was very very impressed with the Shack reissue that the excellent label did so i'd think the quality level will be similar

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i've heard that excellent do good work. wish they'd reply to emails though. i'm almost more intrigued by this john wood album - it's got a version of "here it comes" on it...

which summershine singles do you think are classics?

jon dale (jon dale), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

difficult question! definitely the first four, the EV of course, the jupiter 12", truck train tractor, afterglow..

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

i've always stuck by 'vibrato/violin' as jewel in the crown. also love clark springs, the carousel, the springfields, velocity girl, beatnik filmstars...what else was there? umm...the honeybunch, velvet crush, ric menck comp...richard davies...

the more i listen back, the less i like most of the australian stuff on the label...though i still enjoy jupiter's 'leave the ground'.

really though, it was all about east village.

jon dale (jon dale), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:42 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah, i just scored birdie's 'some dusty' and it's incredible - can't stop listening to it. but you were saying above that you're not much of a fan esoj?

wish i'd got their 7" on s/shine.

jon dale (jon dale), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

oh no i like birdie quite a bit, but i think some dusty is much, much better than the subsequent albums

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

I have the E4 12". Will upload it somewhere if I get a moment. It's not very good though, definitely developmental. They also had a couple of tracks on an EMI compilation called "The Dotted Line", those these may be the same recordings as on the 12". Yep, EMI.

harvey.w (harvey.w), Friday, 9 June 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

i ordered the reissue thanks to jim's gemm link but it hasn't arrived yet. they had three copies at jetset records. birdie is much better than saint etienne these days, i wish they would be as prolific.
