By the Clean, or otherwise. Catchy, happy drinkin' songs that would be best suited to the soundtrack of a lo-fi frat party.

GbV "echos myron"

I guess I kinda walked right into a request for GbV by phrasing it that way, huh? I meant funkier, weirder, with more percussion (electronic or otherwise).

I've been listening to "Tally Ho" since someone brought up the Clean earlier this week. not that i need much prodding. After I played them today, I immediately felt like hearing some old Mekons for some reason. I put on Honky Tonkin'. Immediately after THAT, i felt like hearing some Half Man Half Biscuit, so I put on their peel sessions that features "The Trumpton Riots" and "Arthur's Farm/All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit".Then I played Th Faith Healers cuz I just had to hear "A Word Of Advice" and "Hippy Hole". Then I played The Wipers cuz listening to Th Faith Healers made me think of Sonic Youth for some reason and then I thought about Nirvana and how much money they owe Greg Sage cuz Kirt really did steal a lot from him-not that there's anything wrong with that-so I played Youth of America and Over The Edge and they sounded so fucking good like they always do.The Clean led me to the Wipers. That's all I know for sure. Hope this is useful.

Great Unwashed - "Hold On to the Rail"
The Bats - "Block of Wood"
Axemen - "Hey Alice"
Tall Dwarfs - "Nothing's Gonna Happen"

Also probably some Snapper song, but my S records are boxed up at the moment so I can't check. Actually none of the above really sound like "Tally Ho" but they're lo-fi and very sing-along and great (and the Great Unwashed is 2/3 of Clean anyway). For some reason my brane only focused on New Zealand stuff but I also gotta mention the greatest song of all time- The Twinkeez - "Aliens in our Midst"

Cannanes - "You're So Groovy"

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just me, or does the theme song for the Drew Carey Show ("Cleveland Rocks") kind of borrow the "Tally Ho!" melody? (you know, the melody for "all the little chicks with the crimson lips...") "Tally Ho!" equals INSTANT HAPPINESS. I love the way the keyboard and guitar diverge on one note and it sounds like a mistake, but it's done consistently, so it's probably not a mistake. Kickstand do a pretty good cover of it, and I saw Yo La Tengo team up with David Kilgour and the Heavy Eights to do an absolutely fantastic live version of it.

More indie-type party songs? How about the album Hexbreaker by the Fleshtones? If you can stand a little rockabilly, Southern Culture on the Skids are the ultimate redneck party band.
