in bris-bane australia, where i live there is a indie rock venue that is part of a 10 pin bowling alley. it is inside the ten pin building but seperated by a wall with plexi glass. it is awseome. you can watch bands, and people bowling. plus it has free pool and cheap beer. it is in one word probably one of the best venues i've ever seen. i doubt its like is seen anywhere on the planet.

does anyone else have examples of extermely weird band/or club venues.

tks

dualplover in sydney put on stuff in great places. i've been down a muddy tunnel to deep underground ww11 bunkers under botany bay to hear stuff, and in a male "brothel" where bands played in tiny rooms fitted with harnesses, glory holes, whatever.

I believe add N to X did a gig in 'the secret bunker' which is an old underground refuge from where the UK government would have conducted its in the vent of a nuclear war. It was in Fife, Scotland, of all places which is weird cos Fife would be the first place that I'd bomb if my finger was on the button.

Ha ha, HSA has played a gig in that secret bunker! (He played with Sonic Boom, of all people.) He got a souvenier mug and everything. I laugh whenever I use it, saying "well, it's not exactly secret if it's giving out souvenier mugs, is it?"

my friends recently played in a beautiful bubble tea place in chinatown with big glass picture windows.

also, didn't spiritualized once play up in the CN Tower in Toronto? I think it was billed as the "highest concert on earth," har har.

He plays with Sonic Boom and you don't like his own music? Aw, Kate. ;-)

Sudsy Malone's in Cincinnati is a music venue/bar/laundramat. You can rock out with your stalk out, get pissed, and wash your dirty undies all at the same time!!!

I've personally performed music in/on a...

A) cave
B) barn
C) rooftop
D) empty swimming pool
E) middle of big field

...thanks to generators and extension cables.

I've seen so many good shows at Sudsy's.

What? He won't let me HEAR his own music. The little I've heard by accident sounds good. But I object to being forced to listen to The Ruts, yes!

A good place to see (but not necessarily hear) a show is the anchorage of the Brooklyn Bridge. I saw a couple things there back in 1997. Anybody know if they're still doing stuff?

hstencil, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha! But why? Was it SOMETHING THAT HE SAID (ner ner ner-ner)?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god, those Anchorage shows were AMAZING!!! I saw Sonic Boom and Mercury Rev's freenoise alter ego The Harmony Rockets there.

(BTW, that's not the song he carolannes - it's that "dancing with the rude boys, dancing with the rude boys, staring at the rude boys, never surrender, never surrender" song that he plays All. The. Time.)

kate, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

there's actually a venue in boston called the milky way with a similar bowling / bands setup. good pizza too.

ben sterling (frozen in time), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the Harmony Rockets at the Rhinecliff Inn, in Rhinecliff, New York. The Rhinecliff Inn is a rickety old hotel and bar, situated just next to the train tracks and the Hudson River. They played in a backroom, with nothing except two strobe lights. It definitely ranks as one of the best live shows I've ever seen.

I only saw two shows at the Anchorage - one of which was a Jim O'Rourke/Main/Scanner show. The sound guy fucked up Jim's set (this was around the time Happy Days came out). It was made up for by the members of CAN coming up to me and Jim while we were talking afterwards.

* The Frying Pan - a boat docked off the Chelsea Piers - was always a good place to see shows. I saw Rocketship, Henry's Dress, the Receptionists, and many more there.

* There was one indiepop fan in Maine whose parents had a barn, and she'd have shows there.

* I once played on the roof of a midtown Manhattan apartment building on a hot summer weekend. I have pictures from the day - even though everyone looks like they're about to die from heat exhaustion, you can tell we were all having fun.

God, I love unconventional venues.

mike a (mike a), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and up until recently, Seattle had its own Sudsy Malone-type venue in Sit & Spin. (It still exists as a bar, but not a venue.)

FORT THUNDER!!!!! (RIP.) www.fortthunder.org/

Seriously, I only went to like two shows there before it was closed down.. but easily the most amazing venue EVER. Dozens of bikes hanging from the ceiling, stuffed animals, toys, paper mache monsters, screenprinted wallpaper; they held wrestling matches there for christ sakes. Primordial ooze from which sprang Lightning Bolt, Forcefield, Olneyville Sound System, Landed, etc.

Also in Providence we have The Sickle (good warehouse/house space with fun decoration and lots of couches), The Munch House, The Hilarious Attic and we still sort of have Monohasset Mill, I guess. The Mill is most notable for its amazing parking lot, where you can smoke mad dope and drink forties. I spent an entire weekend at a hardcore/indie fest there last summer totally fucked up and had a great time. Bonus points for a dunkin donuts across the street and a roof you can climb on to.
