IS MIKE PATTON GOD?

Any man who can turn the Godfather into a Death Metal masterpiece one minute, then croon seductively to Jennifer Charles about "blowing up her baloons," the next, has to have some connection with the unknown.

gollywang, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

It's weird that I don't give a crap about him. I'm a fan of prog rock, experimental, art rock, noise rock, weird time signatures and everything else. I've heard every Faith No More album and 3 Mr. Bungle Albums and I only was mildly interested in fragments of each album. Can't stand his voice, either. Have only heard a song or two from Fantomas, but it sounds like Mr. Bungle to me. Dat shit seems played out to me.

He might be God, but I seriously doubt it. The Lord works in mysterious ways.

Scaredy Cat, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

No, god does drugs.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Allegedly. Look at giraffes.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, think about it he invented trees. Hippy.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

And what did Mike Patton invent? Big shorts?

Waste of fucking space.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Tomahawk's new Mit Gas =

A) fuckin monstrous & gorgeous
B) one of the most amazingly packaged CDs evah

It kinda sucks, I was just getting over this disgusting Patton binge-cycle, listening to Fantomas, Adult Themes for Voice, the solo album with Zorn & Ribot, Mr. Bungle, Lovage, the colab with Merzbow, Faith No More, and the first Tomahawk album WAY TOO MUCH over like 2 weeks time, and just as I was finally getting away from it, Tomahawk had to go and put out a brand new fuckin gnarly beautiful album. Fuckinay mang!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

And the answer to the question is: not quite, but maybe more like a lesser demigod, like Anubis or something.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The packaging is indeed awesome and beautiful. I'm still not sure about the album itself, Rape This Day sounds like the Foo Fighters (well the chorus does) but I don't care, and the last song is fucking awesome and noisy though.

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

You either get him or you don't. If you get him though, every other piece of music sounds like Staind. He's that good.

And don't blame him for the Nu-Metal stuff. It wasn't his fault.

gollywang (gollywang), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike Patton's body of work = Classic

Patton fanboys that say he's "god" = DUD

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know about Mike Patton. I'm tempted to say he's overrated, and that his career post FNM (and sometimes w/FNM) has been "SoCal metal dude applies Zorn-tactics to otherwise pedestrian loud rock". Even his label cops Zorn: a "beautifully packaged" way of releasing his own stuff, that of his idols and some Japanese bands. I could get past that if I was into his music more, I guess.

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

more like "No-Cal" metal dudes.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Eureka!

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Unabashed 'fanboy' goes on record to say...

I love that I've got recordings of Mike singing in Italian, German, Arabic, Hebrew, Portugese, Spanish, Latin, English, and a variety of non-language scat-styles. I love how he uses so many different microphones & recording set-ups to capture really distinct vocal sounds for each piece/mood. I love how he can really let go so much, and can also hold back even more. I love how much range he explores, with pitch, breath, dynamics, and his balance of sense-of-humor and sense-of-adventure. "Fanboy" I wouldn't exactly call myself (as, unlike the majority of other Mike Patton freaks I know, I actually listen to OTHER SINGERS), but shit mang he's the farking BOMB! WTFevah!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Tomahawk and The Melvins are playing in Indy tomorrow night. I am stuck four hours south, cannot get out of work and they are not playing Cinci or Louisville on this tour.

earlnash, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

no Nick, you are not the kind of "fanboy" i was talking about. when i was at the last tomahawk show i met a girl that said "i buy anything his name is on" and i said "even if you think it sucks?" she replyed "i dont think anything he's ever done sucks. i think he is god." and i wanted to throw up.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The only thing of his I can even somewhat tolerate is "READ MY LIPS: SCARY/SAX LESSONS OF THE NIGHT" from Great Phone Calls... and even that is pushing it.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

That's because you're a Dungeons and Dragons nerd, Gygax. I feel the same way about Mortiis and the Alan Parsons Project.

maria b (maria b), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

You barely tolerate Mortiis??!?!? How much are you forced to listen to people singing his praises?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 15 May 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

lets keep some focus here. This is about Mike Patton and his unequivocal genius, not Mortiis.

gollywang (gollywang), Thursday, 15 May 2003 07:42 (twenty-two years ago)

gollywang (gollywang), Thursday, 15 May 2003 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i really ought to catch up on mr. patton, seeing as his name is always dropped into such personal and perennial favorites of mine like messrs. zappa, zorn, and morricone. i don't know why i haven't checked out the mr. bungle/fantomas stuff yet -- it's on the list though!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 15 May 2003 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Zorn produced Bungles first album.

Agnosticism = intelligence.
Atheism = embarrassing.

maria b (maria b), Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

and i just realized that im GLAD he has 15 yr old girls obsessing over him without MTV or major press exposure.

But were you all obsessive like this back in the day? I probably was. Its natural when your knowledge of music is limited to the few albums you: a)managed to hear about somehow b)can afford. So when I found something I liked (esp. something as strange as Disco Volante), I rode it out maaaaaan. All the way.

I'm glad he has his fans too.

Yes.

gollywang (gollywang), Monday, 19 May 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You either get him or you don't.

Oh no, you should add a third (heh) possibility: you can half-get him. Personally I'd rather you keep him.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 19 May 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

my lips are moving, but there's no sound. some day, someone will point out that it doesn't actually matter if he's god or not, because its the 2nd coming of jesus that heralds the end of the world. and he hasnt come twice yet. I dont think.

Captain Bo, Friday, 23 April 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Mike Patton play with Fantomas. They were headlining for Melt Banana, which was very nice of them. I really loved seeing Melt Banana. Anyway, I liked Fantomas' first song but then all the others sorta used the same tricks. It got boring. The crowd was terrible. Except Mike from Racebannon - he was there. OMg I love his band.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 23 April 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the funniest things I ever read on Infernal Combustion (a parody metal webzine, for those who don't know) was a little one-liner:

MIKE PATTON STICKS MICROPHONE UP ASS...BOXED SET TO BE RELEASED IN MAY

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 24 April 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Skankuss.

gollywan, Saturday, 1 May 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
Hemophiliac: 50th Birthday Celebration Volume Six
Mike Patton, Ikue Mori and John Zorn are Hemophiliac, and together they are responsible for some of the wildest improvisational music ever. Performing for Zorn's 50th birthday month and playing to a packed house of screaming enthusiasts and obnoxious groupies, this set shows them at their most focused and most intense. Their first release since the 2001 online-only limited edition, this is new music from the outer reaches of madness.

Has anyone heard his new record with the X-Ecutioners? Its better than I was expecting.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's great! do you know what the concept is - like did he molest their tracks all the way through, or did they hurt him too?

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It's good, mostly because his presence is minimal, the tracks are short (23 in 46 minutes), and it's mostly the DJs' show.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

which begs Jay's question.. Makes you wonder who had what input. I read some stuff that they might take this show on the road, which would be interesting.

I want to know where nickalicious stands, due to his position as the resident patton enthusiast on the board.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

>Makes you wonder who had what input.

Well, the X-Ecutioners can do this kind of thing in their sleep. A lot of the samples are very familiar "old standards." And Patton only sings on a few tracks. I'd be really surprised if the album took more than a week to make, and if there was much more than ten minutes' discussion about a given chunk.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i just found this rather enlightening interview:

http://playlouder.com/feature/+pattonthehead/

i don't think that this is the executioners' show at all. it's a combo, unthinkable without the presence of both sides.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

no
i am god and i am not mike patton
