This song becomes a billion times better when you sing the verse parts in a breathy falsetto.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the songs not so much about trolls as it is about shooting heroin with trolls.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

my only problem with it is how the choiry background vocals blur the actual words at the end (I had no idea they were saying "Under The Bridge Downtown" for a long time). The same thing happens on the chorus of "Scar Tissue" when he says "with the birds I share this lonely view" or "whip the shade it's a lonely view" or "it's a shame it's alone with you" or something.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

When that song "The Zephyr Song" was being played on the radio, I thought for a long time that the chorus went, "Fly away on my CELL PHONE..." Which made me kind of like it.

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

that's a classic mishear, Sam J. and more proof that RHCP are full of them.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer, please tell everyone about your Red Hot Chili Peppers theory.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Too bad its not about shooting some trolls full of heroin.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

RHCP lyrics are rubbish and i always ignored them anyway (depsite liking several of the band's songs)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I assume it involves heroin....

I remember seeing this live when it first aired. Frusciante seems to wander off into a different song at 1:07 and a few other places.

Lee626, Friday, 13 April 2018 05:43 (seven years ago)

The way I heard it, (in addition to the drugs,) Frusciante & Kiedis has an argument backstage – so JF “sabotaged” the song by mangling the opening riff, dragging the tempo, screaming into the mic instead of singing the lyrics, etc.

absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Friday, 13 April 2018 14:09 (seven years ago)

To my ears it seems more like it's Kiedis who started out too slow, or slower than he could have. And he sings out of tune in several places, even more than he usually does

Lee626, Friday, 13 April 2018 19:53 (seven years ago)

agreed. John's improvisation is a touch sloppy, but inventive and cool. He even gives him a cue: "Take it away, Tony!" but Kiedis is flumoxed. In the book, he also describes being worried about impressing Sofia Coppola, who is watching at home.

This thread title makes me long for a disco-pop reinvention of this song by Justin Timberlake with Max Martin and Shellback. That would set everything right.

I'm increasingly feeling drawn towards the Frusciante-is-the-only-good-one-in-RHCP POV, from the can't-stand-any-of-RHCP POV. Someone played me one of his solo LPs and bits of it were actually good.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 13 April 2018 22:28 (seven years ago)

hell yah the froosh rules bro

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 13 April 2018 22:29 (seven years ago)

I haven't found a way to get into his entire solo discography but as long as I can have The Empyrean, I'm good.

how's life, Friday, 13 April 2018 22:33 (seven years ago)

Thread title made me lol. Great find from the vault
