has anyone seen Damo perform in the past couple years? or perhaps on this recent tour? what's the sonic action? intinerant pysch-folk? kitchen sink hippie-kraut? diddling world beat?

any knowledge is appreciated.

I saw him last summer at a small club in Tennessee. (The owners booked him as a present for themselves to celebrate two years in business; only a couple dozen people showed up.) Somewhere in between itinerant psych-folk and diddling world beat, but spectacular.

Do they still look like BJM cast members?

I saw him last year with Cul de Sac. They covered several Can songs, and Cul de Sac were basically aping Can even on their original collaborations with Damo. It wasn't always great, but some moments (such as the song "Future Days") were inspired. Since this is a different backing band, it will probably be a bit different, but who knows.

Plus, if the venue's small enough and you're close to the stage, you'll probably get a hug from the man.

yeah, i meant to mention that. he hugged everybody in the crowd when i saw him. it was a little awkward, but seemed heartfelt.

Damo's playing with the Immigrant Suns (Eastern European folk/jazz group) and Mick Collins from the Dirtbombs Thursday night in Detroit. This is a very, very tempting show. I'll report out if I go.

Damo... and Mick Collins?!

If this results in an album I will flip out and go batshit. Batshit with JOY.

fifteen years pass...

Damo on tour (I guess it's Damo Suzuki Network)...I'd assume Can songs in the set list but tell me if I'm wrong. Or what to even expect! He's playing the Ivy Room in Albany, CA which is a tiny bar!

I'd assume no Can songs. Almost certainly.

i think last time i saw Damo (it was at my spot -- in 2007 -- so if the crowd were the same size on this show, it would probably be over capacity for the Ivy, unless they've renovated/changed the layout since I was there last a few years ago for a friend's bday) and it was a long-form free improv with a few Can bits I think. The m.o. is he gets someone local to pull together local musicians for a backing band. It was a really long set. Super jammy. Good, but more like one long song rather than a "set list"

If you want Can songs w/a former Can vocalist -- that's what Malcolm Mooney does when he tours.

Also, I think, the last time Damo came to the bay area, the SF show was at Hemlock (I did the East Bay show), and now Tony B is booking the Ivy Room, so I'm guessing that is why the show is there.

oh, looks like there's also a night at the GAMH
