And the most played video on VH1 Classic is?

My guess is Foreigner performing "Hot Blooded" unplugged (with the unhearable but visible piano solo - god, what a shitty mix). That ALWAYS seems to be on. Chuck may be right about Foreigner being great, but thanks to this video, I really just don't care to find out.

Am I wrong? Is their some video that's more inescapable?

I've seen "Strange But True" by Times Two more times than I ever want to see again in my life. And they seem awfully fond of playing Bachman Turner Overdrive. And the live version of "Carry On My Wayward Son" by Kansas. All of which are unfortunate.

two weeks pass...
ironically, I've yet to catch any of the artists you mention, Alex. They play Journey's non-concept videos far too often as well. The live video for "Don't Fear The Reaper" is also seriously disappointing.

Lionel Richie, "Hello"

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 31 May 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"she bop"

Any time they play Motley Crue is that time too many IMO. But I do have to second Anthony's emotion. I'm sick of seeing that (Foreigner's "Hot Blooded" unplugged).

Also overplayed:

Taylor Dayne, "Tell It To My Heart"
Berlin, "No More Words"
um, and anything else that was overplayed by VH1's "The Big '80s"

Way underplayed (for my tastes):

Comsat Angels, "Independence Day"
Ultravox, "Dancing With Tears in My Eyes"
Visage, "Fade to Grey"
Human League, "Love Action"

The sound on the Aqualung live clip they play on VH1 classic sounds like it was recorded on a walkman hidden in someone's pocket.

Ultravox, "Dancing With Tears in My Eyes"
Visage, "Fade to Grey"
Human League, "Love Action"

the possibility of seeing these videos reminds me how crucial it is I pick up another blank videocassette. I've already got 24 hours of handpicked VH1 Classic on tape but I'll need more. Next year I won't have easy access to the station.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 1 June 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I know exactly how you feel, Anthony. Finally, someone else who gets excited over the prospect of recording those rarer music videos that have turned into "holy grails".

Today, I was ecstatic over being able to record Depeche Mode's "Get the Balance Right". I hadn't gotten to see that video until I spotted it on VH1 Classic. (Every early video I've seen of theirs has either been from airplay on VH1 or from their "Catching Up with Depeche Mode" video collection.) Yesterday, I got to record Comsat Angels' "Independence Day". It would be cool to get to record the videos you highlighted. Especially "Fade to Grey" -- I only caught the last minute or so of that video on VH1 Classic. Curses!

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 1 June 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I've caught a few Depeche Mode videos on vh1 classic. One, I believe it was Question Of Lust, involved the most determined tambourine shaking I'd ever seen, thanks to David Gahan.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 1 June 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Dee, I caught that "Get the Balance Right" video on a JetBlue flight this morning (I assume everyone else on this thread has DirectTV? Or is VH1 Classic available on cable too?) -- Martin's "beard" nearly made me laugh out loud, and on a flight where I was sandwiched between Acid-Damaged Berkeley Lady and Mullet-Haired Dude Reading Vol. 13 of the 'Left Behind' Series, it was a lifesaver.

I'm pretty sure "GTBR" is one of the many videos on a VHS comp that DM put out in the late '80s -- sadly, I seem to recall that the title was Some Great Videos (hey, they can't all be gems) -- though whether it's available for rent at your town's local video haunt or just for $500 on eBay, I dunno. Been years since I saw it, but there were many other low-budget goodies on there: you really haven't lived till you've seen "Master and Servant"...

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Sunday, 1 June 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

VH1 Classic is indeed available on cable. In fact, I don't even think I'm SUPPOSED to be getting it, as I don't get most of the other beyond-the-normal video stations.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 1 June 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I can't believe they've played "Independence Day"... *le sigh*

I always see The Stranglers' "Always the Sun" on the very rare occasion I do flip by it. Every...sodding...time.

Ha....i saw that one yesterday. But, it's BRILLIANT, of course, so i don't mind.

four years pass...

Everytime I turn on this channel, I see 1 of 3 or 4 things.. and never videos.

#1 A concert by Bruce Springsteen, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, or AC/DC.. and it's never a concert of these bands in their prime, but rather the older, more boring versions of these bands during the last 5 years.. completely sober and unexciting.

#2 A tribute concert of some sort, with bands such as Incubus covering songs by The Who

#3 Talking heads discussing music in some sort of Top 100 Songs Ever type of special.. with none of the songs or videos played in their entirety.

#4 Full length movies such as Purple Rain or that one of Led Zeppelin playing at MSG from the 70s

This channel was once interesting and exciting, and now I hate it.

billstevejim, Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

The most played video is probably something by Eric Clapton.

billstevejim, Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I like metal and everything, but c'mon.

your list is incomplete, does not include Eddie Trunk

hahaha sorry all you music-hippies (some dude), Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:22 (sixteen years ago)

i kinda like that '01 E Street Band concert special, though.

hahaha sorry all you music-hippies (some dude), Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:23 (sixteen years ago)

man i miss this channel

da croupier, Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:29 (sixteen years ago)

and you just know if there's ever another channel that just plays videos its only a matter of time before they make the same shitastic evolution as all the others

da croupier, Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:30 (sixteen years ago)

i like that metal show okay just because i'm impressed it's actually on television

Because the bar is set so high?

•--• --- --- •--• (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 19 March 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno i just think it's cool these three lugs got a show to spazz about metal, it's charming

be on the treadmill - uh! - like OK GO (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 19 March 2009 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

I dunno. When the one guy starts reciting song lyrics like a Victorian dramatist with gesticulations, I kinda think to myself, "he's taking the piss on metal, isn't he?"
