What would you put on a mix for your drummer if you wanted him to be more 'post-punk'?

Drummer who listens to too much Red Hot Chili Peppers and it shows, needs me to make him a CD he can follow the example of. What should I put on it?

replace the drummer with a drum machine filled with samples of poorly tuned geetar riffs...hire a violinist...change your name to Bucky Goldstein and the Rump Rangers and start from scratch.

She's Lost Control

Ferg (Ferg), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

She's Lost Control & Liquid Liquid are perfect (I'd already planned to put them on there)... I'm looking for stuff like that. I need songs by the way. I don't know enough of the Fall to know which songs have the best drums (or even which drummer was the best). Thanks for your help, all; keep 'em comin' etc. !

Adam A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The Pop Group - We Are Time (tho 'we are prostitutes' is the classic PG song.)
The Birthday Party - cry
the fall - the classical
lightning bolt - ride the skies
mindflayer - are you fucked up?

think you are asking the wrong question.

I think what you need to figure out is how you want your band to sound and work from there. You need to figure out what roles the instruments will play. Do you want a drummer that plays very straightforward rock beats, or do you want more of a funk/jazz/disco/dub sound? You should listen to everything and pick out the bits that you want to steal from.

If you are looking for a "post-punk" sound right off the bat you are coming at it completely wrong. The idea was that you would take an anything goes attitude, use basic rock instrumentation, and then try to be more inclusive of musical ideas that would be considered outside the bound of traditional rock. What I would do is look for songs that are not rock, but specifically have drum beats that you would want to play over.

If I had to do a direct POX for post-punk drums it would be:

Beat Connection by LCD Soundsystem
You're No Good by ESG
24 hours by Joy Division
Careering by PIL
House Of Jealous Lovers by The Rapture
Suki by Unrest
Kether Hot Knives by A Certain Ratio
Wheel Me Out by Was Not Was
The Message by Grand Master Flash
Cheeseburger by Gang Of Four

Pick a Dirty 3 album, any album.

Make him listen to....jazz...

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I see what your saying, Mike, and that's exactly what the rest of the band is onto, but the drummer is very much the "If you don't tell me what to play I'll just go ahead and play the radio-rock beats I know and make them 'funkier'" school of drumming. The idea of the mix is to say "Do you see how great it sounds when you just keep it simple and use your head?"

Great suggestions, too. Thanks. Just what I was looking for. (i completely forgot ESG!)

"burning spear" by sonic youth

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 15 May 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

If that is what you are after you need to get him some Joy Division. Stephen Morris was a brilliant drummer who never played anything beyond boom krak boom boom krak. He did get beyond that, but for most of the early stuff he just played the basic rock beat with a lot of restraint and dynamics. He really knew how to control JD.

Personally, the best drum sound on a post-punk record that I have ever heard was Stephen Morris' kit on Unknown Pleasures. He just played the rock beat with a bit of hi-hat play and some tom rolls, but the kit was mic'ed and eq'ed so well. It sounds really fragile and hollow, but it totally works in the sonic picture.

Are you looking for a straight-time rock drummer, or are you looking for something a little more danceable?

I know exactly what you are talking about as far as his attitude goes. I used to play with a drummer in High School who was exactly the same way.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Thursday, 15 May 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The singer is really adamant about playing up the Joy Division style minimalism. I think what we're looking for is straight-ahead danceable.

On a somewhat related note, it sounds like what we were trying to do has been summed up pretty well by the last few tracks on the new Rapture record.

Adam A. (Keiko), Thursday, 15 May 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Siouxsie and the Banshees - "Metal Postacard (Mitageisen)"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 May 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(Yes, that's the Mark E. Smith remix I refer to.)

(Also, having given my suggestion, there's nothing inherently wrong with the drumming in RHCP and a lot that's pretty freakin' great about it. Not that I'm telling you what your band should sound like, just giving an unsolicited opinion.)
