CCMC - Decisive Moments

Does anyone know this 1994 release by the rotating Toronto improv collective? I think it's absolutely great. Demented vocals, looping electronics, some intense noisy jamming. Somehow all of it connected dead-on for me right away.

The current lineup is Michael Snow, John Oswald, and Paul Dutton. They're playing Oasis for free the next two Mondays at 9.

I saw them last year in toronto at that church hall (whose name i can't rememeber but i also saw brotzmann octet and john butcher as well).

I know they are a trio but they also had this percussionist on the night. he and the piano player really got going and that is what held my interest throughout.

Oswald was playing with noises: I wasn't convinced abt him as a saxophone player whilst the vocals man kind of got lost.

but if i find this i might pick it up.

The lineup isn't fixed. It used to be that whoever was on the Music Gallery's board of directors had to be a member. The lineup for this CD is Snow, Oswald, Dutton, Al Mattes, John Kamevaar, Jack Vorvis.

Mattes - guitar synthesizer
Vorvis - drums
Snow - piano
Oswald - alto sax
Kamevaar - keyboard sampler

I just have one LP, but I like it. Haven't seen 'em live, but I've seen Oswald play sax, he's quite good.

Why am I not surprised you like Sundar? :P
Saw them open for Sonic Youf a few years ago. Sonic Youth were so terrible (Thousand Leaves tour) that CCMC almost seemed more poppy.

That reminds me, you caught Deep Dark United yet?

Yeah, I'm playing a show with Jack Vorvis and a bunch of other improv groups at Oasis June 1 so I guess it's not a big surprise.

SY was not that bad! They played Thousand Leaves note-for-note, which isn't exactly inspired but they were perfectly solid and that was the most I've ever enjoyed that album. It was nothing compared to last summer's show but it was a fully enjoyable professional performance. There was a nice warm feeling when people were crowd-surfing during "Wildflower Soul". I actually didn't get the best listen to CCMC at that show because I was hanging out by the Warehouse entrance trying to find a friend but they seemed good from what I caught. The weiners I went with hated them. Dunno about poppy.

What's Deep Dark United?

You know, I actually found ATL kind of enchanting the way they played it that time.

recently bought the 'ccmc + christian marclay' double set. this time ccmc was michael snow, john oswald, paul dutton. lots of tasty moments. takes a bit of concentration but it's possible to distinguish who's doing what once you acclimate. totally squervy. I'll hunt down 'decisive moments' now.

I like oswald's sax playing, it's so painfully cerebral, always stays abstract, never sells out.

Michael Snow's 'last LP' conceptual hoax is hilarious pretend anthropology... it superficially sounds like an elaborate folkways record, complete with obsessive liner notes, and only comes apart on careful listening, with a final punchline at the end. I've also wanted to check out his 3 CD set of piano music...

But it was exactly as it was played on the album. I had more fun watching their kid strum along on the side of stage with those big air traffic controller ear protectors.

Deep Dark United is, well Im not going to try to describe it on second though. http://www.deepdarkunited.com/ as part of Kosher Records group O' people.

In case anyone was actually planning to go, the Monday gigs are actually at Oasis E at 780 Queen St E not the Oasis on College. However the June 1 show, which will include all CCMC members +, will be at the Oasis Bar & Grill at 294 College.
