If You Actually Had Some Musical Talent, What Would Yer Band Sound Like?

if only i hadn't given up so easily those childhood piano lessons, or those teenage guitar lessons ...

... but if i hadn't, my band would sound like some sort of mutant splicing of Apostrophe-era Zappa, Pleasure Principle-era Gary Numan, and Loveless-era My Bloody Valentine, as produced by the Neptunes (or Brian Eno or Gamble/Huff, depending on my mood and money). which would probably sound like a fucking mess, but i digress.

what would yer band sound like?

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 15 May 2003 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Somewhere between Pulp, Orbital, The Flaming Lips and...the JAMMs. In my dreeeeeeams.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 May 2003 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

even better than it already does

duane (lucylurex), Thursday, 15 May 2003 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

worse, probably. working within one's limitations can be a positive thing..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 15 May 2003 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

spok's beard

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 15 May 2003 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

spok's beard. hehe, prog dork

i think mine would be modal repetitive basslines like the late 60s impulse records (alice coltrane, pharoah sanders), fuzzy guitar and chanty group vocals

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 15 May 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Manitoba's latest gone dub.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 15 May 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

We'd most certainly be Power Pop loserz, probably with a tendency to go Fop-Pop on occasion. I don't think we'd be hated by ILM- we'd mostly be ignored, maybe gareth or julio would summon up the energy to say we're pants once or twice. We'd most certainly be irrelevant on nearly every level. But I'd give great interviews!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 15 May 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My band would sound like a bastard crossing between Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, Sebadoh and Pixies. If only I could find fellow musicians who share my vision here in Portugal...

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Thursday, 15 May 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Belle and Sebastian go Afro-hop.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

psych surf-soukous

pauls00, Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Huey Smith and the Clowns

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

An unholy mix of Husker Du & Ride, fronted by a cute chick singer resembling Rachel Goswell circa 1992.

so yeah, how many of these answers are going be to "well, i'd sound like [some mix of my favourite bands]..." ?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Mensen

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Simply Saucer meets Plagal Grind inna Dub Soundclash

autovac (autovac), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

if i could, my band would sound like burt bacharach being sexually assaulted by joy division.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

my band would still sound like one without any musical talent.

hstencil, Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

an old woman falling down the stairs crossed with the Archers of Loaf

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It would sound like Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, Bjork, Funkadelic, and Princess Superstar having an orgy in a box what's been set on fire and thrown out the window of an airplane with no parachute.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Something that would let me indulge my Marc Almond/Kevin Shields/A R Kane/Walkabouts jones all at once.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 May 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't have a band. I'd play guitar for girls aloud instead.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 15 May 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a band without musical talent. We sound like Garbage (and have been doing so longer than Garbage, I should point out) but in my dreams we sound like Rammstein fronted by Toni Halliday.

Zora (Zora), Thursday, 15 May 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I have some musical talent. If I managed to get a band together and it actually clicked, I imagine we'd sound a lot like Phantom Planet, but with a female lead singer.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Thursday, 15 May 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Can play a Goth Club one night and a Country and Western Bar the next,
and work the crowd into an electrified, near-religious frenzy....
playing the same exact set in both venues....

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 15 May 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

tilt-era scott walker with a rroowwrr cellist and a couple of excellent kompakt-y pop tunes to keep it light for the kids.

dan (dan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

A cross between Sparks and early Boredoms.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Thursday, 15 May 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It would sound like Mississipi John Hurt playing the compositions of
Olivier Messiaen. With perhaps John Bonham influenced trap drums.

Rem Lezar, Thursday, 15 May 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

G!Y!B!E! covering Double Nickles on the Dime with a guitar player trying his best to cover Hüsker Dü or MBV.
I get to play keyboards and glockenspiel.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 15 May 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

platforms.

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 15 May 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve Vai on a brown-acid trip with Kenny Wayne Shepard, Joe Satriani, Neil Schon and Yngwie Malsteem.

(Fuck yes I'm kidding.)

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 16 May 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, that sounds sorta cool in a sick way.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 May 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

(Fuck yes I'm kidding.)
Aaaawwwww, DAMN! And here I was hoping your band would unleash the fookin' fury...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 16 May 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Did I mention my drummers? Jack Blades, Nigel Olsson AND Peter Criss, all in one Grateful Dead-style jam.

Pretty kick-ass, if I do say so myself.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 16 May 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Somewhere between White Noise by Cop Shoot Cop, Night Time by Killing Joke, with a healthy dollop of "The Prophet's Song" by Queen slathered lasciviously all over the top.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 16 May 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

heavy, fast, and rockin' like a train.

Evan (Evan), Friday, 16 May 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

An electroed-up Sparks with Howard Devoto on vocals singing songs about time-travelling Luddites.

Suits.

Ferg (Ferg), Friday, 16 May 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

these ones sounds cool

"tilt-era scott walker with a rroowwrr cellist and a couple of excellent kompakt-y pop tunes to keep it light for the kids. "

"actual answer: Durutti Column meets Loveless
(with Fleetwood Mac harmonies)"
