i have it. "get ur freak on" is great. overall i don't like it as much as supa dupa fly. what do you think? (and is there indian percussion used on "get ur freak on?")

sundar subramanian, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. Tablas. I like it as much as supa dupa, possibly less than da real world. I'd say more, but I have this article I've been sorta dreaming about doing for some months which the album figures heavily in.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

would most people agree that 'da real world' is the best missy starting point? i loved 'she's a bitch', and it has guests i like on it, but still, i figure perhaps the new one is not as outdated (it's so 1999!). any naysayers?

ethan, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All three albums are absolutely distinct. Any one provides as good a starting point as any. Missy raps more on the first album, and timba's beats are laconic and gritty. Lots of guests rap on the second album, and timba's beats are shiny and precise. Hardly any rap (proportionally) on the last album, and timba's beats are clubbed up.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Da Real World" is possibly my favourite, but I reckon all the albums are quite consistent in terms of quality. "...So Addictive" has some of her most fabulous work ever - the stretch from "One Minute Man" to "Scream AKA Itchin" is absolutely astonishing - but strangely the tracks don't seem to build on eachother as well as on the previous albums.

"Da Real World" is not the place to start - too cool and stylistically consistent. I think that is its strength, but as an introduction it would be its weakness.

Tim, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

at this point i must say that all the singles from supa dupa fly seemed, i dunno, too rubbery for me. i liked the ominous vibe of 'she's a bitch' better. the last one is just too damned rave-y though.

ethan, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Evil, awful rave! *spit* I still remember when they were talking about 'hip-house' as some new thing.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i liked the epmd hip-house song. and 'kicked out the house' is utterly classic (garbled lyrics in that possibly the funniest thing de la ever did). hip-house though, dud. glitch- hop, classic.

ethan, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Glitch hop???

Billy Dods, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you know that thread about having an album that's 'yours'? if the same thing could be said about genres, glitch-hop is mine.

ethan, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a fondness for "Shake," the Todd Terry/PM Dawn collaboration on the latter's debut. I would, though.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So Addictive is the first Missy album I really can love as a whole. The others somehow dind't work for me as a whole. Hard to explain why. Nothing else to add than Classic and i'll second Glitch-hop, it's the fututre of rock 'n roll you know.

Omar, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Doesn't last. At first it was, "Oh, this is cool." Then it became "Dear god I never want to hear this again in my life." Not sure how that happened.

Melissa W, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that's what i'm afraid of.

ethan, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never felt that rapping was Missy's strong suit, but that's what she does on most of the record. Of COURSE she pulls it off, in that rough cough-syrup drawl she's got. But I dunno. I just love her voice and wanted her to sing more.

Production-wise I'm beginning to feel the thing's too eager to please, each production detail sitting up sharp-like, demanding too much attention. All shiny surface bits, all the time. There's really little room to breathe. "Slap Slap Slap" might be the subtlest song on the album...!

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer - are the other albums any different though. I was listening to Supa Dupa Fly again today in short spurts, and when I focus on each track individually I'm amazed at how pearly-pert and attention-grabbing each production is.

Tim, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Missy raps far less on the new one, I thought.

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel less.. exhausted after listening to the entirety of Supadupafly, ditto Real World. But that could just be the minidisc talking. CD-to-minidisc sounds to me crunchier, more saturated, like it's encased in a transparent hard candy shell. That's what I've been listening to Miss E w/.

p.s. the mecha-fish-shimmer sound in "whatchu gonna do" is identical to the one in "energy flash".

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

p.p.s. try typing "missy elliott" into the artist search box on allmusic.com...

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All I can say is that I can't think of anything wrong with it at all. Great.

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All I can say is that I can't think of anything wrong with it at all. I love it.

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Erm, WTF? *slaps self*

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually I checked whether there was actually less rapping on Miss E than Da Real World and it's really about the same. Da Real World seems more hip hop based because so many of the raps are piled at the front of the album - "Beat Biters", "Bus A Rhyme", "Dangerous Mouths" etc, whereas on Miss E they're more evenly dispersed.

Tim, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim -- makes sense to me. Da Real World always struck me as funny like that. How it starts off aggressive and ends up soulful. Although, in a sense, So Addictive does as well. Moving to, if not soulful, at least vulnerable.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

With Da Real World I actually reckon that - "Bus A Rhyme" excepted - the hip hop tracks tend to be the (comparatively) weaker ones. On Miss E - "One Minute Man" excepted - it's vice versa. But definitely there's a wealth of good R&B tracks on the second half of Da Real World that get ignored - "You Don't Know", "Sticking Chickens" and "We Did It" especially. I'd include "Mr. D.J." but since I always have to listen to it to remember if its rapped or sung I don't know whether it succeeds as a song. Of course, as a piece of oh-my-god mindfuckery, it's brilliant.

nine years pass...

AND FOR THOSE WHO HATED..... YOU ONLY MADE US MORE CREATIVE!

bernard goony (The Reverend), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 22:55 (fourteen years ago)

I miss how "Take Away" was one of the last of those spare, spacey, ballads in which she and Timbo specialized.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

this is her best album, easy

bernard goony (The Reverend), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know why I prefer Da Real World, I just do - I think it may be the fact that it's more "generic" in a late 90s R&B sense, the way she pushes the vocal harmonies in particular to make the songs as topographically dense as the grooves are.

But then when I'm listening to So Addictive its swagger seems like the best thing ever.

Tim F, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

i definitely prefer da real world, and idk if i prefer it as a whole album but the best half of supa dupa fly is better than ...so addictive, too. and under construction is more consistent all the way through.

i remember at the time it was a pretty huge stylistic shift for her - she SUDDENLY STARTED BELLOWING, basically (and so did the beats) - a pretty brave move, "get ur freak on" basically needed to be as incredible as it was for it not to grate, and make me miss her old calmer stuff.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 23:34 (fourteen years ago)

i love so addictive cause it's like this big global party and missy was never as outsized personality-wise as she was here. pretty much every song was an in your face banger but none of them sounded like none of each other. it doesn't have the problem the first two albums have, which is they get really samey at times. it's like on those albums timbo unleashes a bag of new tricks but then repeats them throughout the album and it's kinda like is that all? you know he's more capable than that cause he just showed you how imaginitive he is, but he doesn't keep it up. whereas on so addictive, every goddamn track has a completely new set of ideas from the last, but cause of the continued party vibe, they all hang together.

i can never get into the first two albums them as wholes, even if i love some individual tracks. her later albums all come off a bit shtick-y, like she was trying hard to show you how much of a character she is, instead of just being one like she is here (totally f/w under construction tho).

but really it comes down to the fact that like half my top 20 missy joints are on this album

bernard goony (The Reverend), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 23:48 (fourteen years ago)

i mean, damn these songs all happen in a row:

"Dog in Heat" (featuring Method Man & Redman)
"One Minute Man" (featuring Ludacris)
"Lick Shots"
"Get Ur Freak On"
"Scream a.k.a. Itchin'"
"Old School Joint"
"Take Away" (featuring Ginuwine & Tweet)
"4 My People" (featuring Eve)
"Whatcha Gon' Do" (featuring Timbaland)

bernard goony (The Reverend), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 23:51 (fourteen years ago)

so :( that she fell of the face of the earth

bernard goony (The Reverend), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 23:55 (fourteen years ago)

"whatcha gon do" is def this album's most underrated banger. that bassline ~~~~

so :( that she fell of the face of the earth

idk people always say this but i'm kinda glad, it was all getting a bit grim right at the end and her heart obviously wasn't in it. if that's the case i'd rather she just have a nice time chilling and counting her money and reflecting on her cultural status. tbh if the long-threatened sixth album did emerge i'd be a bit wary of it.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 2 September 2010 00:40 (fourteen years ago)

when me come in the spot dem wan' jock

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 2 September 2010 00:43 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, that's all true but i'm sure she'll always be good for a fun song or two in between the duds and really i just miss missy ;_;

bernard goony (The Reverend), Thursday, 2 September 2010 01:17 (fourteen years ago)

anyway, another thing i love about so addictive is that it's basically the closest she ever came to making a basement jaxx album :)

bernard goony (The Reverend), Thursday, 2 September 2010 01:19 (fourteen years ago)

i've mostly been bumping this and kish kash the past couple days
