Spacemen 3 -- "Forged Prescriptions" -- worth it?

Right then, so who's heard Sonic's latest re-release of this? It is worth the $16->17(12 quid or so) that I'd have to cough up for it? Is the 2nd disc actually containing some decent material, or will it be like the 2nd disc of _Playing With Fire_, which could be best summed up with a "meh"?

Do I need another copy of "Walking With Jesus", really? How are they gunna be the one that shows up on _Sounds of Confusion_?

In other news, my purchase of Spiritualized's "good dope...good fun" boot yesterday was quite worth it.

Yeah, it's worth it. The fidelity on both discs is good (where it says "demo" this doesn't mean you get a crappy-sounding skeleton as on the second disc of PWF,) and--surprisingly--the new versions of "Walking With Jesus" are both interesting, which is to say substantially (or at least detectably--not always the case with the other Sp. alternate-takes) different from the released versions, and from one another. Throughout, there are interesting revelations, as the recordings tend to be more built-up ("Come Down Easy" with real drums, say, or "Ode To Street Hassle" with additional guitar-tracks,) and in many cases, preferable to the versions on "Perfect Prescription." (None of them, incidentally, are the same versions as on PP.) While there's more than enough inessential Spacemen 3-product out there, this is pretty great. I'd recommend it anyway.

Wonder what's on that "good dope..." boot besides the Let It Flow ep tracks?

Specktor is OTM. It's definately the best Spacemen 3 outtakes disc I've ever heard.

"good dope...good fun" tracklist:

1. take good care of it
2. thing's will never be the same
3. clear rush
4. medication
5. take your time
6. smiles
7. 100 bars (a capella)
8. i want you (demo)
9. feel so sad (demo)
10. anyway that you want me (demo)
11. lay back in the sun
12. step into breeze (instro)
13. you know it's true
14. 100 bars (flashback)

tracks 1-6 are from the Glastonbury Festival(aug 1993)

most of the other tracks show up on "Complete Works Vol 1", except for "Lay Back.." and "Anyway..." which are good, if not better, versions/remixes.

*reaches for the big book of SP3 lore* When SP3 was recording PP, they basically recorded several entirely different versions of the album - most of which I prefer to the actual release.

FP is worth it alone for the cover of "We Sell Soul" which is pretty goddamn good.

I defer to your greater knowledge on this subject, Chris.

Incidentally, maybe you know who *sings* that version of "We Sell Soul?" It certainly ain't Sonic or Jason...

Forged Prescriptions is worth it, assuming you're a fan to begin with. I'd had a tape of stuff from these sessions since '94, thanks to Mr. Barrus, and i was still surprised by the stuff that's only surfaced just now.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 16 May 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

That is indeed Jason singing on "We Sell Soul".

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 16 May 2003 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeez. That makes it J's worst-evah vocal, insofar as I know. (Granted, I just got the new record in the mail--haven't listened to it yet--so there remains room for disimprovement, even if I am hopeful...)

four years pass...

i'm purging my collection. do i really need Forged Prescriptions AND PP?
Forged has all of the album tracks, just with all the guitar they wanted..
