Raw Power remix -classic or dud?

I traded in the CD I had of Iggy's raw power for the remix version. Fatter bass, bigger drums, crunchier, crispier guitars they said. Henry Rollins sez it rocks, must be good huh?

Still rocks but I want the original mix back, even if the tinny guitars sound like they were recorded in a toilet onto wax cylinder. Just sounds more urgent and exciting.

I've heard three separate versions (counting the Bomp-released Rough Power collection) -- me, I like the remix, but there is certainly something about the ramshackle charm of the earlier version...

I know I'm going to catch a big ball of abuse for this, but I still don't understand why RAW POWER is held in such a higher regard than the -- to my ears -- completely superior FUNHOUSE. The production's better, the performance is better, but most importantly, the SONGS are better.

Funhouse, stone me dead, is a collection of brilliant individual songs that I rarely actually listen to as an album. I understand both its influence and its power, but I'm rarely moved to listen to it.

yeah as long as no-one ever remixes Fun House it doesn't much matter what else happens in this world.

Some fucker better not remix 'Kill City' or 'metallic K.O.', which sound shitty and not even in a 'good' way, which is what makes them great. But then you knew I'd say that.

The re-mix is fine for CD, but the orig. on vinyl is untouchable.

The two are so different, I'd never sell one and keep the other; I need to have both around.

I think Bowie was brought in to "tame" the "everything in the red" sound of the original, he that's just what he did. It sounds "artsier" and that's fine. Iggy's mix is shrill, loud, some of the instruments sound more detailed (Bowie's mix tended to obscure some stuff), and is overall the more rocking mix. So I guess Iggy's gets the nod, although I wish it was issued on vinyl.

The great thing about the bass-shy original Raw Power is that you can crank it up really loud on the scuzziest of hi(?)-fi systems ... there's no distorted bass to spoil things, just searing layers of tinny white noise geetar, with Iggy hollering over the top. So I don't really want to hear the remix, in case it tarnishes my drug addled memories of the original

As for Funhouse, maybe it is a more consistent LP, but there isn't a track on there to match the perfection of "Search And Destroy"

I must contradict IM, and say that the original Bowie version on LP (with the exception of the track "Search and Destroy", which was left as-is), is MUCH bassier than the remixed CD. If "tinny white noise geetar" is what you're looking for, the new CD has a LOT more of that. Overall, Bowie's version is more muffled and bassy.

Maybe it was just my scuzzy lo-fi that sounded tinny & white noisy. I have to admit that I (a) haven't listened to the original in years, and (b) have never even heard the rmx, so I could be spouting complete rubbish.

But anyway, what I really wanted to say was: "Search And Destroy" ... I bloody *loved* that song, for a whole year of my life at least. There, I said it. I feel better already.

No argument there. The feeling I get when listening to that song at top volume is unbeatable; pretty much what I love about rock and roll, and about life itself. Its one of my all-time favorites.
