Clever.... but GOOD!

Okay so I'm listening to Kode9's "Dreaming Ocean (remix)" and the whole thing is just screaming out "I Read Reynolds' Sex Revolts!" from every pore... and yet it works so damn well at doing exactly what it sets out to -- the dubby sea of vocal snippets from all sides, the growl/hum of the basslinethe "below the waist however always confusion" sample, dark microjunglism floating in and out.

There's a very formalistic punk elegance in something like this, a concept executed so flawlessly it almost feels like a "fuck you" to the theory it confronts.

Anybody know what I'm talking about? Any other examples? (herbert, sometimes, maybe?)

Sterling I really like this question but I'll have to think for a while.

I'm wondering if it's necessary for the artist in question to seem like someone who *would* read the theory, or whether these sonic manifestations can be inadvertant?

i think inadvertant is ok

amerie's 'why don't we fall in love' last made me feel like this, (assuming for a second there's a conflicting theory of 'new sounds' which there kind of isn't) a thrilling precis of corny golden hazed champagnespray slip-on-a-glossed-lip rnb

Yes, I think both Amerie and her producer are very clever and know exactly what they're doing, there's a definite feel of intentionality there.

It occurs to me that I might think of this as "punk" because Gang of Four were the first time I really picked up on this. Also maybe Tortoise's "Glass Factory" and absolutely Joan Jett's Gary Glitter covers.

The Blues And Abstract Truth?
