(my reticence = ignorance not attitude)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 15 May 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

He co-wrote Daft Punk's "Digital Love" which makes him godlike Classic!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 15 May 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm always suspiscious of the american house mafioso djs and there producers chops. however. doesn't he pop up on the first jaxx rekid? and maybe jist maybe he has some very tidy production work along the line. that newish thing though is a bit naff. He was on Room 208 in australia the other day. And if you know room 208 you gotta wonder.

i think maybe he's a lightweight classic.

gallantseagull, Thursday, 15 May 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

lol Room 208 lol! DJ Sneak? on Room 208? What the..? < /rove>

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 May 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

for better or for worse he was one of the first people to do that filter disco house thing.

Randall Helms (RPH), Thursday, 15 May 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

He was on Relief Records.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Thursday, 15 May 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"You Can't Hide from Your Bud" = one of the first (maybe the first) filter-disco house rekkids which alone makes him at least semi-classic. too bad he's never made an album or DJ mix that lives up to that legend

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 15 May 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yes charlie no4 room 208. he looked pretty funny. actually he looked like he was enjoying himself. what was i doing watching it? i wouldn't like to say.

gallantseagull, Friday, 16 May 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

can someone explain "filter disco house"

sorry

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 16 May 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

and does it differ from french filtered funk?

i prob can't explain it other than check out:

stardust - music sounds better with you

its got that music is soundely in another room oh no its back in this room vibe to it. like someone is opening or shuting a door. or a filter as the case really is. whats a filter. a big nob on a computer.
yup. or a button.

gallantseagull, Friday, 16 May 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

'fix my sink' = sux0r

minna (minna), Friday, 16 May 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

no minna!!!!!!

I think it's great, although the monologue is kind of outdone by Perspex Sex by the freeform five.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 May 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god absolutely classic if only for "On the sneak tip" on Radikal Fear, still one of the best relief-style tracks ever. Also for an insane "Flash" remix that was even nastier than the original, and for the S Men record and for owning Gramaphone. One of those people without whom dance music would have turned out completely differently.

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 16 May 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

OH! thanks, gallant seagull - now I get it... that dorothy stepping into Oz & suddenly everything's technicolour thing

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 16 May 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Freeform Five sound great!

DJ Sneak i've always found a bit too monotonous to really like - i saw his live set 6 years ago and it was alright but i need something more...

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 May 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan have you heard a version of "Perspex Sex" apart from the Ewan Pearson mix? The remix is ultra-k-classique-to-the-max-etc. but I'm not sure how much of it is Freeform Five and how much of it is Pearson.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 16 May 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ha fritz that's the best def of french house i've ever heard

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

No I haven't Tim, though I've seen him get reverence in print for it to the extent that I presume he has done the body of good work himself.

The vocal is still great though!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

It is indeed - truth be told it may be my favourite song of the year so far.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 16 May 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard it last year on the Futurism 2 comp which I slated and berated at first. I have to backpedal a bit now because I quite like it!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
This is fun, no?

DJ Sneak - 'Que Pasa'

Alba (Alba), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Polyester EPs are great, esp the funky looping "My Thing", the dirty basement dub of "Sneak's a Freak" and the just flat out fucking weird but still funky "Who's The Boss?"

rentboy (rentboy), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 11 December 2008 07:54 (seventeen years ago)

do you know any release similar to that?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 11 December 2008 07:55 (seventeen years ago)

he has a 2 disc mix cd out next year which runs along the same lines:

Chicago house producer DJ Sneak is next in line to do a mix for NRK's Back In The Box series.

Following on from Dave Clarke's selection of vintage acid-house, Sneak's double-disc mix perfectly encapsulates his loopily jacking sound, taking in Cajmere, Paul Johnson and Derrick Carter. Why all the old stuff? Back In The Box is one of the few mix sets that encourages producers to delve deep into their crates and pick out some of their classic tracks, rather than just being a reflection of what they're playing at the moment. That's why in addition to the aforementioned Chicago house legends, there are a couple of tracks from the Sneak man himself, including his re-version of Loose Joints' "Is It All Over My Face."

Tracklist

Disc One

01. Blak 'n' Spanish – Call Da Vibe

sam500, Thursday, 11 December 2008 08:04 (seventeen years ago)

i meant jacking, not groovy.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 11 December 2008 09:50 (seventeen years ago)

Durrr Durrr, try Classic Records and Music For Freaks comps. I really like Brett Johnson's Business As Usual for the former and Johnny Rock & Matt Styles' See You @ The Party for the latter.

Tim F, Thursday, 11 December 2008 10:13 (seventeen years ago)

that NRK mix looks great

rentboy, Thursday, 11 December 2008 12:24 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah there are some great records in that tracklisting. I just hope the mixing is suitably rough. The mixing on the one and only Sneak mix I ever owned was a bit flat.

sam500, Thursday, 11 December 2008 13:46 (seventeen years ago)

three years pass...

I'm sure it's been posted somewhere else, but great piece by Matos:

caro's johnson (Eazy), Sunday, 6 May 2012 18:08 (thirteen years ago)

Derrick Carter is talking in the comments section, calling attention to the things that Matos left out. Hard to think of a higher honor than having Derrick Carter jump into the conversation.

Still a good article. I find myself telling friends about the origins of house music all the time — gay, black, latino, inner city, midwestern, USA. They all think it's white and European. It's good to have these articles published.

elan, Sunday, 6 May 2012 23:26 (thirteen years ago)

It is a great read. And Derrick Carter had some good comments, but, shit, he opened up the floodgates for a lot of other comments to dump on Matos.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 7 May 2012 02:08 (thirteen years ago)

oh man derrick carter should feel lucky that someone in the us still wants to canonize the man who brought us a million novelty samples (ragtime, banjo, klezmer, etc) over a hyperactive 4x4 beat

the late great, Monday, 7 May 2012 02:26 (thirteen years ago)

this dude's latest fabric cd is BANGING
