I've owned this record for some time, and I always thought the cover was goofy but innocent. Then, recently, I had a closer look...

Just look at those "mountains"!

Can't find the image, but Psychic TV's "Dreams Less Sweet" has a slavering dog dimly visible somewhere on the cover. Oooh, scary!!!

Also, Bill Drummond, in 45, mentions how he freaked out about about Echo, the mystical rabbit, accidentally appearing on the tree branches of Echo and The bunnymen's first album Crocodiles. I've squinted at that cover from multiple angles but still can't see it. Is it his over-fertile imagination or can anyone else see it?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 16 May 2003 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, wasn't there a highly symbolic Frankie Goes to Hollywood record sleeve, where there was a phallic building sided by two domes? Can't find the picture anywhere, though.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 16 May 2003 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

you look at it and you go, geez, how cute. they're cartoons. but then you look closer and HELLO! why didn't i see that before?

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 16 May 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, no really, this one is more of a you have to open it up to see that the pretty little chick on the cover has a (it rhymes with chick)

"Echo, the mystical rabbit...."

I thought Echo was the name of the drum machine they used when they first started?

the tree at the front with the two trunks looks like a rabbit's ears.

Bill Drummond KNEW that Echo, the mystical rabbit, was the real owner of the band, and the others were its servant, the Bunnymen.

Actually, it's a bit more obvious there. Usually, the bottom part (the original LP art sleeve folds out) is disguised as a piece of fruit.

Ben Folds' Fear of Pop's back cover, you kinda gotta look a few times before you realize what that cowboy is doing. Ew.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 16 May 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I once gave my mom a record of medieval songs. I wish I remembered the title, because it was a good collection. Anyway, only a long time after I gave it to her did I realize that the picture on the cover portrayed a man sticking his hand under a woman's dress. (This was secular medieval music, obv.)

Re: Drummond and the Bunnymen

Bill Drummond was a master of making things like that up, he thought up a whole story behind the Bunnygod that it was supposed to have originated from Inuit myths but it was all a nonsense story.
Yes, Echo was the name of the drum machine. The band's name fitted in the Liverpudlian weird names tradition of the time.

Tijn, Friday, 16 May 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Dirty Vicar, I totally see a rabbit head there. It's almost a 3/4 angle. The hole look like it's eye. The man to the right appears to be looking right into it's eye. Also, if you see it this way, the treebark really does a good job of simulating colored patches of fur. The bunny has a white nose and brownish forehead and ears. That really looks like a rabbit!

How come European import CDs sometimes have those exclamation mark stickers?

Sam J. (samjeff), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Those stickers originate from record companies owned by Warner Bros, and mean that they're being sold at mid-price (or at least they are in the country of origin).

There's a penis or two on this cover, in surprisingly prominent places. Also, it's been suggested there's a similar priapic fixation here:

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 17 May 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

This may vanish, `cos it's a Tripod image, but from the back cover of Styx's Grand Illusion, note the silhoette of the GOAT'S HEAD reflected in the water right under the bottem line where it reads All Rights Reserved

Styx being the river in hell, of course.

As if the image itself wasn't shocking (pardon the pun), there is a little note hidden in the presentatin with the word POSITIVE written on it in bold type face, a mcguffin which spawned rumours that Perry Farrell had been diagnosed as HIV positive.

From the inside booklet of Magical Mystery Tour, this relatively innocuous pic of the fabs (playing "I Am the Walrus," taken from the film) looks innocent enough....until you notice Paul's not wearing shoes, and there's a slight red tint on the shoes just in front of the bass drum (blood?) Log this under the whole "Paul is Dead" phenom.

The other one that springs to mind is the Bad Manners album with a cute little dog on the cover, sitting on a cushion (can't find a pic for it unfortunately). A closer look at the cushion reveals a brown semi-liquid stain on it.

Who knew Robin Guthrie was such a pervo!?!?!

What's wrong with the Abbey Road cover, I can't notice anything weird.

Surely you've heard of the myriad "Paul is Dead" clues, no? It's not just four gents walking across the street, it's gravedigger, corpse, mourner, priest, the license plate on the VW beetles reads "28IF, LMW," meaning to some: he'd have been 28 if he hadn't died, Linda McCartney Widow. Oh, and Paul is out of step with the others.

Geddit?

What's wrong with the Stone Roses Second Coming album?

I already explained it above, but ridrectly under the word "Roses" is a picture of a flaccid penis.
