Who wants to recommend me some El/Siesta type records?

I'm a big fan of Louis Philippe, Serge Gainsbourg, Francoise Hardy, La Buena Vida, and Free Design and have recently enjoyed Siesta releases by Rita Calypso and the Barry Gemso Experience so who wants to cheer a poor boy up (well, it's raining) and recommend me something along similar lines (harmonies, orchestral backing, songs in French, you know the kind of thing. Nothing too twee mind!!!!!!)

This is a rawk-free thread.

"Saint Lucy" (on the Dinner with Nougat EP) by the Gol Gappas (on El), if you can find it. Actually, it isn't exactly what you describe but it's one of my favourite songs.

My favourite El record (apart from the Vic Godard one, obv.) is "Oh Constance by Marden Hill. they went on to make some dreadful records but that one's an absolute pearl. Like Tag (St. Lucy!) I'm not sure it's exactly what you're after but I thought I'd say anyway. Sorry.

I'd like to suggest something, but I haven't heard much that's good lately. Have you heard John Cunningham? I hadn't until a few months ago, altho' he's been around for 15 years. Kind of breathy, Lennon-y chamber-pop, or so I guess they call it. A bit more earnest/confessional than what you're talking about, but close sound-wise. I'm not as thrilled by his latest album as I was by Homeless House, from a few years ago.

So, tell us about Rita C. and Barry G. why don't you?

Curt (cgould), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

How about Eggstsone, a nice Swedish band with a compilation record on Siesta? And, are you famliar with the Tricatel catalog?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Eggstone!

"Water is good for your body..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever happened to Eggstone? Suave young playboys that they were.

Tag (Tag), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

They are still sunning themselves in Malmo, the South of Sweden.

Kim, maybe you would like him? Taken from OM website:

Benjamin Biolay "Negatif" CD (Virgin France)
RealAudio Benjamin Biolay "Billy Bob A Raison"
Benjamin Biolay has quickly become a significant name in French music, his sumptuous baritone voice and lush arrangements frequently being compared to Serge Gainsbourg. Biolay's second album is darker and quieter, influenced as much by American folk music as French Chanson. Stunning!
Buy $18.99 Benjamin Biolay "Negatif" CD

Okay, I've got one for you. Damien Youth, especially his Sunfieldalbum from 1999, overbrimming with gorgeous Barrett/Donovan/Drake-ish melodicism and eccentricity.

Also, I've been re-discovering the pop splendor of the Bee Gees Odessa, which I used to have in its original red velvet foldout vinyl before stupidly deciding the Gibbs weren't cool and trading it in to buy punk albums.

also the fugu and orwell albums fit the description, fugu is a bit like the french Cardinal.

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 17 May 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for all the suggestions. Curt, The Rita Calypso album is in the same vein as Margo Guryan or Francoise Hardy (only modern), beautiful female vocals, lush orchestration, the odd Lee Hazlewood cover, the perfect pop album really: I totally recommend it. As for the Barry Gemso Experience, this is a collaboration of different vocalists and musicians (over forty), from the Monochrome Set and the Would-Be-Goods among others. Some of it is in the light easy listening vein and some sounds like Captain Beaky fronting the Divine Comedy. It is a totally rich and diverse album and the musicianship is astonishing (not in a prog-rock way or anything, mind), so again, I would say Go Buy!!!!!!!

''And, are you famliar with the Tricatel catalog?''

No, but I'm all ears!!!!!!

Kim Tortoise, Saturday, 17 May 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh it's Betrand Burgalat's boutique-ish label. BB works with Louis Philippe sometimes. Have you heard his Sssound of Mmmusic? April March is also on the label.

http://www.tricatel.com

I just bought the Benjamin Biolay -- a bit more jazzy than poppy but very mellow and pretty nice. Have you heard Katerine? And if Momus was around he would prop up Toog I think.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 May 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Another one you should hear, Kim, that's fairly close in sound is Saturday Look's Good To Me's All Our Summer Songs. It's more of a lo-fi, Spector/Beach Boys style song cycle with a bunch of guest singers on hand. Like a looser, synth-free Stephen Merritt production. Achingly beautiful in places, and the more I hear it the more it all seems of a piece.

Curt (cgould), Sunday, 18 May 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and by the way, has anybody here pointed out the LONG Wendy & Bonnie sample that leads off the new Super Furry Animals album? About 45 seconds of "By the Sea". Wacky.

Curt (cgould), Sunday, 18 May 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

is the new barry gemso better than the last one? cause the last one was only so-so. better to go with scarlet's well for the ex-monochrome set action.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 18 May 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Scarlet's Well are the best band in the world. They are, however, a bit twee. Of course, you said you liked Free Design, who are more than a bit twee, in fact sickeningly so.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Sunday, 18 May 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That Christmas compilation they just brought out on Siesta (er, in April) in a wooden cover fucking kicks pigeon butt. And contains ex-members of Strawberry Switchblade

Jerry (Jerry), Sunday, 18 May 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

free design are too twee but i like their cover of 'michelle'. i wonder if bid is still working on the fantastic evrlasting gobstopper record? the christmas album is great because most of the songs aren't vry christmassy especially the one about going off to an unpopular war.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 18 May 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Bid should forego all other obligations (such as eating and sleeping) and concentrate on writing and recording as many Scarlet's Well albums as possible.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Sunday, 18 May 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)
