'Empire Records' (the movie) - C or D?

I've watched this (almost) in full several times on TV, fascinated by its terribleness. It's excruciating to watch - time grinds to a halt, and making it from commercial break to commercial break is grueling. Watching it makes me totally embarrassed for everyone involved, and for myself. It's not just that the dialogue is stilted and awful; every actor's line readings are awkward and off in some weird, uncomfortable way. It's great alternasploitation - this was someone's idea of "cool, quirky" young people working at a "hip" record store. And Renee Zellweger singing on the rooftop at the end...

Sam J. (samjeff), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Utter crap, with the only saving grace being the use of "A Girl Like You" before it was played to death.

And the worst part about it was that it sparked a thousand dumb-asses coming up to me at Michigan Wherehouse Records and saying "Is that really what record stores are like?" while filling out applications that I threw away as soon as they walked out the door.

Erick H (Erick H), Friday, 16 May 2003 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought it on DVD for $2.99. It's so bad... well, it's still not good. But I find it watchable.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 16 May 2003 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Just the fact that they set it in Delaware should provide more than enough information about its suckatude.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the worst movie I've ever watched multiple times from beginning to end. It's got that Saved By the Bell even-though-there's-nothing-you-like-about-it-you-can't-pull-yourself-away-from-it audio/visual crack-cocaine thing going on in full effect. I really want to consider Giovanni Robisi one of my favorite actors (Boiler Room, Suburbia, y'know?) but thanks to the existence of this piffle, blargh!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Just the fact that they set it in Delaware should provide more than enough information about its suckatude.

Well, hold on now, maybe it's an accurate portrayal of Delaware record stores.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I love this movie, and was very disappointed that the soundtrack has the original version of that Coyote Shivers song, not the great one with Rene.

Therefore I'm afraid you are all assholes.

ara, Friday, 16 May 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm flat out fucking AFRAID of this movie.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

This film's kind of like Busted (the band), in that I want to hate it but all I can do is just sort of stare ahead in mute awe at how impressively, horribly EVIL it is.

Ferg (Ferg), Friday, 16 May 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think Giovanni Ribisi's in it, nickalicious - though it seems like he should have been. (Or am I missing your point, and does he lose points due to his failure to appear alongside all the winners on this cast?)

Sam J. (samjeff), Friday, 16 May 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a dreadful film. the nadir is when they pretend to be at the suicidal girl's funeral. complete sentimental crap.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 16 May 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

That scene brilliantly evokes "M*A*S*H"!

The "suicidal girl" character makes me want to squirm out of my skin.

Sam J. (samjeff), Friday, 16 May 2003 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't understand why otherwise sane (well, relatively) people with good taste rave about this movie - or why multiple fansites, fanfic, or for that matter a thread on ILM exist.

it is a mystery to me.

H (Heruy), Friday, 16 May 2003 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

It's so completely absurd, I love it. The kid who played Warren Beatty should have been Oscar nominated.

Paul Cox (paul cox), Friday, 16 May 2003 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dudder than dud: the 80s teen movie (which in part made 90s alternat-culture possible) comes home to roost with that sad, silly oh-so-90s stab at a mild profundity.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 May 2003 23:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I wanted to punch every single caraciture (they weren't even close to characters) right in the face, almost as hard as the director and writer who thought this is how real people act.

Teenagers eat it up though.

David Allen, Friday, 16 May 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

The same director also brought us Pump Up the Volume.

Paul Cox (paul cox), Friday, 16 May 2003 23:23 (twenty-three years ago)

pump up the volume was good.

Eve, Saturday, 17 May 2003 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

holy crap, this movie was set in Delaware? i had no idea...i guess that explains why it was so popular in my high school. (though i should mention that one of the best (selection-wise)/worse (indie snoot staff-wise) record stores i've ever seen is in Newark, DE).

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 17 May 2003 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Was it Bert's CDs?

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:42 (twenty-three years ago)

The same director also brought us Pump Up the Volume.

And therefore Times Square, which stressed him (Allan Moyle) out so much that all his hair fell out.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 17 May 2003 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Pump Up The Volume was totally on crack too, but I found its play-the-Descendents-CHANGE-THE-WORLD! pipedream a lot cuter. This movie was waaaay more if-only-I-worked-at-Coconuts-then-I'd-be-cool low-rent and gross in its audience's desire-stoking. Plus Anthony LaPaglia looked more like a pimp then when he tried to look like one in So I Married An Axe Murderer. The only good thing about the movie is "Til I Hear It From You" by the Gin Blossoms, which features the guiding hand of Marshall Crenshaw (I state that only as trivia. I liked it before I knew it had any "cred" whatsoever).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 17 May 2003 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Carey was watching it one time when I came over to watch Buffy DVDs. She said she didn't mind it being in the background cuz one guy was cute. She did point out though that there is a half-funny video parody (and I did indeed find it half-funny).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 17 May 2003 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard Tobey Maguire was in this, but his scenes got cut -- which of course begs the question, how bad does a scene have to be to get cut from Empire Records?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Saturday, 17 May 2003 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, Jeff, that would be Bert's.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 17 May 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Liv Tyler.

That is all.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

terrible
i've seen it around 900 times cause when i was younger my sister used to watch films over and over and every time i was in the kitchen for months it'd be on
given how bad it was the first time, you can imagine what i think of it after multiple viewings...

robin (robin), Saturday, 17 May 2003 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

given how bad it was the first time, you can imagine what i think of it after multiple viewings

I absolutely hated it the first time I watched it, and was hesitant to see it a second. But it was that second viewing that it started to get better -- and then with the third, I liked it even more. I guess I've seen it six or seven times now, but not recently.

Paul Cox (paul cox), Saturday, 17 May 2003 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

jordan has a point. that scene where liv strips (not completely, sadly) for the ageing pop star is something to behold...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 17 May 2003 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

It always bothered me that the colors of her panties and her bra are mismatched.

Paul Cox (paul cox), Saturday, 17 May 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

But that is the genius of it!

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 18 May 2003 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Its worth watchign if only for Liv Tylers cute but entirely ineffectual role..

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Monday, 19 May 2003 06:19 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not GiovanniR. It's Ethan Embry who was also the kid in Dutch. I find the movie horrible but also extremely watchable. And the guy from Dazed and Confused is excellent. And the GWAR is somewhat funny. Yeah I like crappy movies with pretty colors.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 19 May 2003 08:29 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
That's the thing about her bra and panties being mismatched...Corey's the innocent 17 year old girl who wants to lose her virginity to Rex Manning. The whole "innocence" deal comes across with her wearing white panties...and it's particularly important that they're panties, and not a bra.
Speaking of the bra, she borrowed it from store slut Gina, who insists she "had a lot of luck with this red bra."
Bottom line: the mismatch shows the difference between the innocence Corey wants to leave behind and the sexy woman she wants to be.

WTF???

http://images.quizilla.com/B/btrfly105/1061798320_turesgina2.jpg

You are most like Gina. You are confident in your
sexuality. You want romance, but you don't get
it often. Maybe this is because men suck at romance. Nonetheless, you are happy with just some good sex. You like to be the center of
attention and appear very confiden, but you have lower self esteem than most people would think and you try to make up for what you lack
by hiding your real self behind your exterior. Chances are, your family life kind of sucks and you don't get along with your parents, especially because they don't approve of most of what you do.

Which Empire Records character are you?

miccio (miccio), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm. This is horribly inaccurate. Still, I don't know what it could have said that would have pleased me. I love Lapaglia, but as it's characters not actors...

http://live.quizilla.com/user_images/B/btrfly105/1061798387_ureslucas2.gif

You are most like Lucas. You can be somewhat irresponsible, but you don't ever regret what you do. You are pretty stylish, but without much effort. You are intelligent and philosophical. You speak your mind, despite the consequences. It is difficult for you to accept change because you have been passed around a little bit and you long for stability in your life. You could really do a lot with your verbal abilities and your intelligence. As far as family life, you were most likely adopted. Please kill yourself now.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 19 November 2004 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never worked out why I like this movie. Maybe it just kills a lot of time or I'm just incapable of hating. Maybe you bite me.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 19 November 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

You are most like Deb. You have somewhat of a
depression. You tend to look for attention, but
you don't always get it. You are a deep thinker
and you are somewhat confused by life's
purpose. You have very rebellious tendencies.
You hated high school and you hate authority
figures. You probably come from a broken home,
if you even know your real parents. On the
upside, if you learn how to channel this
energy, you could be a great writer or artist.

I was at a club in LA drunk off my ass once and recognized the guy DJing as the rocker dude from Empire Records whose name I remembered (even in my inebriated state) is Coyote Shivers. So I went up to him and was like, um were you in ER? It was, in fact, him and I walked off with two really shitty CDs of his that later because embarrassingly guilty pleasures.

I also saw a little person on little crutches OD in that club that night. That's a whole other story though.

I think my issue with the movie is it feels so paint-by-numbers. every character/moment feels like boxes ticked on a checklist.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 10 April 2016 15:15 (ten years ago)

Love how this film is basically the third part of a "youth rebelling through music trilogy" from director Allan Moyle that also
includes the amazing Times Square (1980) and Pump Up the Volume (1990). All 3 films have amazing soundtracks, but
Pump Up the Volume is probably the most poignant (and, being a teacher, I've always liked its message about a school alienating
vulnerable kids as a way of making money-a prescient look at the charter school "revolution").

the shoplifter stealing rap and metal cds and getting the condescending "see this is why yr so ANGRY" speech from the wisecracking sensei employee always annoys me. not cos I fit the description, mostly cos it's just a lazy eyerolly sequence. same thing with the dance sequence to AC/DC.

despite approaching things from a slightly different topical angle, this movie has more in common with Airheads than it would like to admit, in terms of its attitude. whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you!

sexy dander (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 10 April 2016 21:29 (ten years ago)
