Severed Heads - "Hot With Fleas"

Quite possibly the best song about a bad dog ever written. All mecha-funk should be this punishing and robotic.

(U+K: I can only endorse the _Bad Mood Guy_ version of this song; the _Bulkhead_ version isn't nearly as funky or punishing.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the 12" and love it. I can't remember which mix though. You might be totally wrong, Dan.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

The best parts of the album version are the stutter-stop percussion and immaculate use of space in the beat; the 12" version on _Bulkhead_ replaces this with a dancefloor friendly house beat and smooths out the synth/bass riffs for maximum clubbage. It just isn't as effective.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 May 2003 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, dead right. Just reading that makes me want to listen to it again, it's been years.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 16 May 2003 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I've always preferred "Canine", the B-side of that single. Also makes a great contribution to any "IDM before IDM" compilation... but "Hot With Fleas" is a wonderful single.. just the song title alone.

("HEY DOG! YOU COME DOWN HERE! YOU COME DOWN HERE AT ONCE!")

Canine KICKS ASS

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 16 May 2003 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

While we're in Severed Heads appreciation mode, try playing "Godsong" from Since the Accident about 8-10 bpm faster, all you DJs. It's from 1982 but at the faster spped it sounds really modern and rocks the crowd!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 17 May 2003 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't know if the indie kids down here could cope

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 17 May 2003 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Tell them it's the new Console single. It probably is anyway.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 18 May 2003 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

No kidding, a good chunk of "Since The Accident" and "City Slab Horror" has eerily foreshadowed electronic and/or dance music the past five years or so.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 18 May 2003 07:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Halo...oh yes. 1985. Foreshadowed yes, but I grew up on hearing this shit in clubs. Dead Eyes Opened still takes the cake for me.

I started reading this thread and you wouldn't believe how long it took me to find some Severed Heads in my ultra mess of a music collection. I did find them though!

Hot with Fleas hasn't aged well with me, but I love their later stuff. Big Car anyone?

disco stu (disco stu), Sunday, 18 May 2003 09:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Big Car *swoony mcswoon*

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 18 May 2003 12:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I ADORE "BIG CAR"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

how does everyone feel about "Pilot In Hell"? (poss controv: IMO the last truly classic SH tune)..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I love "Big Car" off the album... it is swoony in that early Depeche kinda way. Don't care too much for the remix off that single with the pineapples on it.

"Pilot in Hell" is GREAT, and is the only song I like off "Cuisine" (aside from the noisy and loopy "Piscatorial" ep)

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

"Two Dead Daughters" is pretty fantastic, but yeah "Pilot In Hell" is a fucking STORMER.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

we are Cliffords

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

We should all form a Severed Heads cover band called the Clifford Darlings.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 May 2003 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

i bags vocals!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 19 May 2003 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I bags backup vocals! And yodeling!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 May 2003 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

So I guess that leaves me to the rhythm guitar and gothic frontman posing.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 May 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I'll do beat programming, too.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 May 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I will do tapes and treatments.

disco stu (disco stu), Monday, 19 May 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i can do the bass as well

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 19 May 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I will be the audience and assume the correct art viewing stance.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

otherwise known as GETTIN YOUR GROOVE ON

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 00:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Err, no, I don't dance, I'm too inhibited by my intellect. I will, hoever, stroke my chin knowingly.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I will dance madly behind my stacks of strange machines to atone for Colin's beard stroking.

disco stu (disco stu), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Stu, but your dancing will be strange, gormless, gawky, geeky, formless and fraky deaky. ANd your shirt will be tucked into your jeans. For this is a Severed Heads gig.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

...and we aim to strive for authenticity...

disco stu (disco stu), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait, has video artist been claimed yet? If not, I'll do that.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know what any of you are talking about.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

FOR SHAME.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
Okay, why didn't we follow through with this 4 years ago?

HI DERE, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

what's this 'Lamborghini' track by them that's like from '82 or so? it's awesome. i have to hear more SH.

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

That would be 'Petrol'?

Severed Heads 1979-1982 is all good stuff.

moley, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

There's 100 different versions of Petrol, luckily they're all pretty cool.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

seven months pass...

DB is a mentalist for not liking "Golden Heights/I'm Your Antidote" and "Host of Quadrille".

HI DERE, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Cuisine is awesome. It's the last one I got though.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

It's been a while since I've listened to Cuisine. I don't think I "HAET" any Severed Heads song at all! ("More indifferent to than others" is the better phrase, maybe)

Anyway, I've been trying to catch up on all the Op releases, which have been Rotund For Success quality stuff.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

thirteen years pass...

This song still bangs
