He just did a battle of the bands in Detroit with The Gap Band and The Ohio Players at the Fox Theatre. I was too poor to go that weekend, and I was feeling very unhappy about it.

Totally untrue! I saw him in DC jamming out near a hot dog push cart. He was raking in the dough. He must have had at least four dollars worth of quarters in the case!
