that "pump it up" song : quite something!! outstanding in the co. of the nearly-all-good-stuff mix tape i 1st heard it on*, outstanding even more now that it's getting played alla time in less consistently awesome co. on Tahu FM**. yeah so anyway what else's he got & what do you all think of it & stuff

* (hey thanks again minna!)(i already told you this lots of times prob. but that tape is about my #1 album of the year so far, 1st thing i grab any time i'm going somewhere in the car)

** maori community station out of chch, it's where i get most of my admittedly ltd exposure to modern music.....in the daytime they play nuthin but dozy sounding maori language versions of bob marley songs (i'm not exaggerating!! NOTHING BUT!!!) but @ night, solid r'n'b/rap, ratio of good songs/bad songs about 75/25 which is higher than any other radio stn in the country E-Z.

(least fav song out of current Tahu rotations : that one where the girl (duno who it is) sings "koochie don't fail me now/i gotta turn this brutha out"....you know that song?...man it SO creeps me out! )

that fucking song is playing again now - they play it LOTS - & predictably enough i find myself starting to like the fuckin stupid piece of crap.

joe budden: has a polyp in his throat or something... (i only heard this from chip morningstar... chip what exactly is going on?)
his album is coming out this yr, sometime soon. the other hit on it is 'focus' from last yr which is also really good, check the remix with ll cool j. you should also hear 'everything's a go' by memphis bleek. i guess i can put this stuff on pt 2 if you cant easily dl or whatever.

minna (minna), Sunday, 18 May 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

man, the first time I heard it on the radio, they played the "coochie" version, which amused me greatly, but every time since then, it's been the "[awkward pause] don't fail me now" edit, which I don't like nearly as much.

"Pump It Up" is fantastic, the horn break sounds like Just Blaze doing his Baltimore club impression. that shit is a banger like people only wish "In Da Club" was.

fuckin WHUH, that song is Missy?! i'd forgotten tho, back when her 1st album came out & probably her 2nd one too i thought she was terrible. jeez tho, i never wouldve guessed.
no i can't really dl stuff & even if i did it wouldnt be in a form that is partic'ly useful to me, so yes yes pls make me a pt.2 tape pls !!

"focus" is really very pretty. without knowing exactly what i'm talking about i'm gonna say i think it's got an rza-esque approach to texture. the sound of hiphop ephemera solidifying into new and intriguing globs. not pretty tho: "how we goin out to eat? i thought you didn't swallow" and "i've got enough beef not to start slappin' you."

i'm gonna tout the "da club" remix with him and fab n paul cain again here.

"i might have to get surgery to get my voice back. i got some swelling going on back there. it just comes from a lot of acid. i drink a lot of acidy shit. you'll never see me without a beverage. even now my voice is a whole lot deeper than normal. you can hear something is going on"

so afraid this is going to be the "akshon!" of 2003.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

'pump it up' is a great example of the compulsive anxiety behind 2003's nu-oldschool sound brought to you by jess on his own with no external influences on nylpm, even if it is a dribble on from last year's 'under construction' chic. i love how long you have to ride the beat out to chase the horn strafe! and the sheer relief when it zigzags back. it's taut; forcing you, desperate keep you partying, keep you staring forward (don't look back? past romanticism? hmm?)

also joe b fucking smacks it tuff in his reply to jigga's s.carter collection beatjacking

Chip Morningstar (bob), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

chip, I have no idea what the fucking that entire paragraph was about. i've tried and tried to decode it, but to no avail.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Chip Morningstar (bob), Monday, 19 May 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

um it's like...

DER NER NER NER NER NER NEEEEEEEEEEEEEE(this is where you're zoned out to the horndrone and clinging on to the rideout beat panicky almost) EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER

seen?

Chip Morningstar (bob), Monday, 19 May 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

is that a 'mentasm' or an 'energy flash' behind the horn sample?

vahid (vahid), Monday, 19 May 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

chip: am i ununderstandable? beetroot says no but not at 145bpm. haha flop!

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 19 May 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)
