TS: Adam And The Ants' "(You're So) Physical" vs. Killing Joke's "Requiem"

both from 1980 and sound disturbingly similar.

Though the sound is more Joke-like then Ant-like, I'm gonna have to pick Ant's because there's more crazy fun stuff in it. But Requiem rocks too.

Anyone else notice the total similarity?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 May 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer the Joke here.. just because "Reqien" is so... just, anthemic in comparison.

Although if it were the Ants' "Red Scab" instead, I'd have a harder time choosing.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Adam & the Ants sounded SOOO damn good on paper. Their sound
is utterly brilliant, really, they just couldn't write
good songs.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man, I can't agree with ya Squirrel_Police. "Stand And Deliver" I knew was genius, I threw on my ignored copy of Kings Of The Wild Frontier today and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. MAN, it's nice to have an album from a fad that audibly brings the fad with them. While songwriting may not have been their strongest department, I don't mind not always being sure which song the burundi-drums, yip-yip's and pithy one-liners I'm thinking of came from. And "You're So Physical" was evidently written in 1978 according to the liner notes, so maybe KJ stole it from them!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and I realized today that album is Gary Glitter meets Here Comes The Warm Jets-era Eno. Therefore, CLASSIC BEYOND ALL BELIEF.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Huh? Adam and the Ants had tons of top songs. They may well be the most tolerable new wave band ever, in my mind (the Cars too. There are tons of others actually. But is there anything more lame than bad new wave? Or more depressing than all the great punk bands that put towels on their drums and "went" new wave -- Nervous Eaters, the Weirdos, etc?).

What does Killing Joke sound like? I don't think I've ever heard them.

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 19 May 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

They sound like You're So Physical if you take out all the really Adam Anty stuff. Or Girls Against Boys minus the rasp.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 May 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not even going to dignify this with a proper response.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 May 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not even going to dignify this with a proper response.

you just did! :)

willem (willem), Monday, 19 May 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

No, a "proper response" would've involved threats of grievous bodily injury, arson and a thousand decades of abject suffering.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 May 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not even going to dignify this with a proper response.

you just did! :)

"I didn't!"

"No you did, just then!"

"No no no."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 May 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

good morning.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 May 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Miccio just wanted to see another harleyquinn/gladiator picwar.

I'm keeping my mouth shut except to say that ADAM ANT UBER ALLES U R ALL GAY.

TS: Adam And The Ants' "(You're So) Physical" vs. Olivia Neutron Bombs "Physical"

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 19 May 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually wondered why these songs sounded so much the same well before I knew of ILM. The Ally vs. Alex In NYC element was just an added boon.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 May 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

You're just trying to drive a wedge between us so that your Good Charlotte/Fred Durst love can continue unopposed, aren't you?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I think all sane people are united against that love. But I have to admit it makes a good slash fic idea the way you phrase it.

"Durst licked his lips in anticipation. 'You're not like the other popular bands, are you?' he said..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned am pure evil. Must warsh brane now.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the most famous A&tA song?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

(I think I've only heard the Nine Inch Nails version of "Physical". I'm pretty sure I haven't heard KJ.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the most famous A&tA song?

i'd say "Stand and Deliver".

willem (willem), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

you know, i for one would have pegged Alex as being an Adam Ant fan. maybe he wouldn't side with Adam Ant in a contest against Killing Joke (as is the case here). but i did think that Alex (of all people!) would be able to see the greatness of the best of Antmusic.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a fan of Adam & the Ants....not strictly solo Adam (I know that sounds like a ridiculous distinction, but both Kings of the Wild Frontier and Prince Charming are fucking light years above the dung-like piffle that dropped out of his catlog after the Ants split from the proceedings).

I love Adam & the Ants, but as Tad rightly points out, they're nothing but dollop of congealing spooge compared to Killing Joke. Moreover, to compare the elegiac menace of "Requiem" to the spanky/wanky "(You're So) Physical" borders on disgraceful. I will contend, however, that Nine Inch Nails' rendition of "(You're So) Physcial" might have come imbued with a subtle nod to the Joke (lord knows he cribbed enough notes from them elsewhere).

Anthony, is your appreciation for Fred Durst and Limp Bizkit serious? I always assumed you were joking.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

dung-like piffle

*head totally explodes in trying to respond to this in a reasonable fashion*

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i move that Ned Raggett's RPS opus be named "G00d Harlot," because...well, just because.

*catapults brain into bucket of lye*

janni (janni), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

You give me the fear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

two good songs, but i have to go with killing joke as they were always much funnier than adam and the ants.

dan (dan), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I do indeed like the Bizkit, Alex (their singles comp will be wholly righteous). Sure there's a bit of ironic appreciation of their lunacy in there, but I genuinely think Durst is a commanding, exciting, gonzo rapper and the band can rock (nowhere as plodding as their peers). I like that they're silly, because unchecked aggression IS silly.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Spooky.

I just got through listening to a Killing Joke song someone on a file-sharing program recommended to me a short while back, and I was thinking to myself how Adam & the Ants-like it sounded (except it was grittier, less polished) (it was "Rejuvenation", FYI), and in the middle of it I opened up this thread.

Spooky.

And if I had known how Adam & the Ants-like some of Killing Joke's songs could be back when I was 13 and completely nutso over Adam & the Ants, you'd be dealing with two tremendously devoted Killing Joke fanatics over here in ILMland instead of just the one. (Like I mentioned in an earlier thread on some other board around here, I'm a very loyal individual. I've weathered tons of abuse about my Duran Duran fandom over the course of ten-plus years and I'm not about to give up that.)

And now someone's stated that another Killing Joke song out there could be compared to Adam & the Ants, most notably an Adam & the Ants song I happen to particularly adore. "(You're So) Physical" is one of the songs I turn to when I'm down and I'm looking for music to lift my spirits up.

Spooky.

Dee the Semi-Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the inherent similarities between the Joke and the Antz are due to each band's fascination to the Burundi "tribal" drum aesthetic (although, oddly, neither "Requiem" neither "[You're So] Physical" boast said style. Because of this, I believe these bands were initially lumped together for a tiny bit of history. However, Adam's love of all things flash and Jaz's love for all things Nostrodamesque would ultimatley drive them very decidedly apart.

But, at the end of the day, Adam Ant has as much in common with Jaz Coleman as Carott Top has to Aleister Crowley.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

If you ever liken Adam Ant to Carrot Top again, I'm going to kick your ass.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, Carrot Top and Aleister Crowley both seem inexplicably famous in relation to their achievements. And Adam Ant and Killing Joke doesn't seem famous enough!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Carrot Top actually have any achievements? Hell, Yahoo Serious seems more likely to be a big man on campus than Carrot Top.
