Couldn't be more classic.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

total classic. but that cover of "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" is vile.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear God. Are we talking PRINCE'S "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" that he's covering?

maria b (maria b), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic of course; did Jam & Lewis produce his Prince re-make? (all I remember is it was done as a slow jam)

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

That Prince remake is probably the only unforgivable thing Jam and Lewis did. At least it's the only thing coming to mind right now.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ahem

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"Give It To You" = uber-classic.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 19 May 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I can forgive that, James, cuz I never had to hear it in Taco Bell.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 May 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

A Pia Zadora album got four and a half stars in AMG? What the everloving fuck?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 19 May 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I guess I just needed to have an affirmation of what I already knew (after a ridiculous arguement with a friend of mine over the song).

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 19 May 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

To clarify "what I already knew": that "Give it to You" fucking buries basically any other pop song from '99. Not even close.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 19 May 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Jordan always was the Justin Timberlake of the New Kids.

maria b (maria b), Monday, 19 May 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

true

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 19 May 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

...is that meant to be a compliment?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 May 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, Jordan Knight is soooooo much more talented (and classier) than Justin Timberlake it ain't even funny.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 19 May 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

shit. this is from 1999. its kinda bad though. listenign right now - i'm sure i've not heard this before.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Monday, 19 May 2003 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the great singles of the last 10 years - more fairground pop pl!

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 19 May 2003 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't this song very very creepy in a date-rape-spelling-out kinda way?
I seem to recall the lyrics being VERY disturbing.

HoraceMann, Monday, 19 May 2003 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

You say it's been too long
Since you had some
Just say I turn you on
Like a fire that's burning inside
You think that I'm the one
You see in your dreams
I know what you mean

It's creepin' around in your head
Me holdin' you down in my bed
You don't have to say a word
I'm convinced you want this

Baby you know I can give it to you
I can't deny I'd do it right
Just let me know and I'll give it to you
Show me where I'll taste you there
Baby you know and I'll give it to you
Your body needs a man like me
Anything goes when I give it to you
Without a doubt I'll turn you out
The feeling is fine giving you everything of mine

I'm the place to be and soon you'll see
I don't care who leads as long as we move
Horizontally
Anyone can make you sweat, but I can keep you wet

It's creeping around in my head
Me holding you down in my bed
I can't wait to give you some
I'm convinced you need it

Yeah, these do not sit right with me.

HMann, Monday, 19 May 2003 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

is this one with the Grease based video?

H (Heruy), Monday, 19 May 2003 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I rather like the lyrics. It's a better cunnilingus song than Khia's "My Neck, My Back".

Brian the Snorf, Tuesday, 20 May 2003 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the way he gets the girl in the video by showing off at all the sidestalls. he has the strength of ten men and the keen accuracy of an exocet missile. wouldn't you want him to give it to you.

it's good that girls appreciate this kind of stuff, like Hoagie getting the girl and befriending baddies thru his skills on Street Fighter. These things inspire a young boy dammit!

nebbesh (nebbesh), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay...is this the video where he stops the song to put out an evil smoking girl's cigarette in a fit of pique?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

why was Jordan Knight not able to follow up the success of 'Give It To You', particularly as it pre-empted the 'Timbaland/Neptunes working with pop icons' extravaganza of recent times?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i really hated this song when it came out however many years ago but my tastes have changed and now i'm dreadfully afraid to listen to it again. i remember it does the neat rhythm switch up at the chorus but will this click now or perhaps destroy me instead? something about the guy...... i think it's like the allergy some people have to Timberlake here (which i do not share).

Honda (Honda), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

a fantastic and truly prescient production. It was all about this track and whatever Rodney Jerkins was doing for a few months there.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

But didn't the track totally rip both Timbaland (in a general thematic sense) AND the INOJ cover of "Love You Down" (in a specific sense)?

Regardless, this song -- and the track that samples Sugarloaf's "Green Eyed Lady" -- is the reason I can't sell that disc, no matter how hard I want to sometimes. Sheer genius.

Erick H (Erick H), Thursday, 22 May 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

this song and INOJ both have that freestyle nouveau-Planet Rock beat, but the vocal arrangement is where this really shines - and that's why I brought up Jerkins.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 22 May 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

There were lots of precious little moments in the video (like where he puts out the girl's cigarrette). But my favorite was totally where Jordan and his boys are all dancing and then they all squat down and, like, dwarf-walk in a circle. That was totally hilarious. I remember it way better than the song.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
That video is unquestionably an unheralded moment in the post teen-pop landscape. One word: rollneck.

Holy shit, this screwed version sounds like Isaac Hayes!

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 23 July 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

who was the girl in that video, she was puuuuurrrtty.

shaun kinski (shaun kinski), Saturday, 23 July 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

It still holds up marvelously. I'd forgotten how WEIRD the fuckin' thing is.

And I enjoy the Prince cover too.

This song really goes downhill after the first ten seconds.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

One of Timbaland's best, most overlooked productions.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

not timbaland

swvl (vozick), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Probably the finest by-product of that weird wave of resurrected boy-banders that hit in the Spring of '99.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

classic

joe schmoe (joeschmoe), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I was kidding. So was Joey McIntyre about his solo career.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

I have absolutely no idea, but Jordan Knight was in the bar I work at tonight. Didn't tip.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 20 October 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Man, Jordan Knight was one of the most surprisingly good interviews I've ever had. I was all set up to submarine him and fuck with him because, well, in my dickish journo heart I thought it would be fun to skewer him if he was a ponce. But he was so self-deprecating and funny, with a good grip on his current level of fame (he talked about how he could live off of his investments forever, but he got bored of not having a job to work on every day, so he went back into music, and how he's happy to play dive bars across the country, etc...)
The other interview that I did the same day was Lyrics Born, who was talking to me from a cell phone in the car and couldn't be bothered to give me more than "Yeah... um. Well... can you hold on a minute? Yeah, I just think this is the best thing I've done." "Why?" "Well, listen to the album. I just think it's the best."
Woulda been easier if his flack had gotten the album to me quicker than three hours before the interview...

three years pass...

Underrated classic, but goddamn the lyrics are creepy

master of karate and friendship for everyone (musically), Thursday, 16 July 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

I really don't see the creepiness. They seem like standard R&B lyrics. Is it the "holding you down" line that people are tripping on? I don't think he's implying anything non-consensual. Even the "you don't have to say..." part he contradicts with "just let me know"

Dan Majerle and the Wailers (Whitey on the Moon), Thursday, 16 July 2009 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

ten years pass...

Still a massive one-off.

I wonder what happened.

Still have a lot of love for this song. Great video too, especially the way Jordan and his group aggressively walk up to the camera in a line in the second verse.

lol "he loves u not" "don't think i'm not"

dyl, Saturday, 13 June 2020 03:29 (five years ago)

this song is amazing & jam and lewis 100% ripped themselves off when they made "someone to call my lover"

J0rdan S., Saturday, 13 June 2020 04:23 (five years ago)

Delightful, weird, a great dance record that’s somehow only enhanced by the 3/4 carnival-music breakdowns, Jam & Lewis coming into pinch-hit for Robin Thicke of all people and turning out another classic has to go in their already lengthy list of hall-of-fame moments, and I dream of one day pulling off a turtleneck as well as Jordan does in the video.

Also I saw Jordan Knight as an opener for Aaron Carter (at an age when this would have been a compelling proposition) on what was presumably the tour for this record. Unfortunately don’t recall him doing “Give It To You”, just stuff from the New Kids back catalogue which was most of the adult audience seemed to be there for.

Until COVID he and the other New Kids made a killing on the cruise circuit.

whew this bass mix from the maxi single

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGMoITOHT34

i'm pretty sure it interpolates the main line from art of noise's "moments in love"?? lol

dyl, Saturday, 18 July 2020 06:04 (five years ago)

Absolute classic, but yeah, the people way up thread saying the lyrics do cross over into creep territory a few times were otm. I love the stop-start of the verses, and the way the chorus just sort of bounces out from that like an uncoiled spring.
